Lynn Lim and Glenn Yong on filming intimate scenes together

The Star3 days ago
When local actress Lynn Lim and Singaporean heartthrob Glenn Yong first got their hands on the script for Astro's latest drama Step Dave , both were surprised and intrigued.
Adapted from the New Zealand series of the same name, the Malaysian remake pushes past conventional boundaries with its bold themes and number of intimate scenes rarely shown in local or Singaporean productions.
'When I first received the script, it only highlighted a few key scenes, and one of them was from the first episode when a grandma and three kids walk in on me naked.
'When I read that, I was like, 'Wow, this show is pretty lit!' I had to try it out,' Yong, 28, recalled with a laugh during an interview with StarLifestyle in Kuala Lumpur.
Lim, who also joined in the conversation, admitted that despite her decade-long acting experience, the sheer number of intimate scenes initially made her nervous.

'A lot of the stuff that happens in this show isn't common in Malaysian productions. It's quite Western in the sense there are more intimate scenes than usual.
'My mum is also a little more on the traditional side, so I had to call her to tell her it was all acting,' the 36-year-old said.
Spanning 10 episodes, Step Dave revolves around Dave (Yong), a 24-year-old hairstylist and barista whose world is turned upside down when he falls for Cara (Lim) – a single mother of three who's 15 years his senior.
While their May-December romance has sparked resistance from both Dave's peers and Cara's family, he is determined to make the relationship work.
However, things get complicated when Cara's ex-husband Steven (Henley Hii) reenters her life, hoping for a second chance.
Building trust
For Yong, one of the key challenges was preparing for the kissing scenes – a first in his acting career.
Having never filmed such moments before, it was a nerve-racking experience for the young celebrity, who made his acting debut in 2019.
'I've pecked my co-stars in previous shows, but this one is full- blown make-out and French kissing kind of stuff,' he said.
Yong and Lim took time to build trust and rapport before shooting the more intense scenes. Photo: Handout Lim chimed in: 'I still remember the two of us asking the production team who we'd be kissing, because when we first got the script, we had no idea who was playing which character!'
To ensure filming went smoothly, Yong and Lim took time to build trust and rapport before shooting the more 'intense' scenes.
Apart from chatting on set, they also made an effort to bond outside of work by grabbing dinners together.
'We were very honest with each other about our boundaries and comfort levels. Once that trust was established, it made the whole filming process so much smoother,' said Lim.
Yong agreed, adding that their off-screen connection helped him ease into the more vulnerable moments.
Despite their contrasting personalities, Yong and Lim share a lot in common. Photo: Handout 'I wasn't sure how we'd click at first as we're from different planets – I'm more uptight and serious whereas Lynn is more carefree... Like, you get different versions of her each day.
'But as we spent more time together, we realised we share many things in common,' he said.
Being in each other's company didn't just help their on-screen chemistry feel natural – it sparked personal growth too.
Describing himself as very shy, Yong said being around a social butterfly like Lim has helped him come out of his shell.
'He's become more open to showing his vulnerability, and I really appreciate that,' said Lim.
An ode to parents
Lim, who first gained recognition after finishing second in the 2008 Astro Miss Chinese International Pageant, made her acting debut in the 2015 drama Runaway Housewives .
She has since taken on various roles in productions like My Sensei Nyonya (2018), Love Delivery (2020) and Look At Me, Touch Me, Kiss Me (2023), among others.
Working on the drama has allowed Lim to learn more about the challenges that come with parenthood. Photo: Lynn Lim/Instagram Despite her experience, Step Dave marked her first time playing a mother.
'I was really stressed because I feel like I have more of a big sister vibe rather than a motherly vibe.
'But with time, I started to realise there are many different types of mums out there, so why not play a big sister kind of mum, you know?' she said.
To deepen her portrayal, Lim embraced method acting throughout the two-month shoot, staying in character even when the cameras weren't rolling.
Her commitment paid off.
Not only did her performance come across as compelling, but she also left the set with a goddaughter – actress Dada Venice Ng, who plays one of her kids in Step Dave .

Stepping into the role of a mother also gave Lim a deeper appreciation for the struggles parents face in raising their children.
Through her character, she began to understand the emotional weight, sacrifices and constant decision-making that come with parenthood.
'I think being a parent comes with a huge responsibility. They are very courageous people because it's not easy to raise one child, let alone three.
'If I were in Cara's shoes, I'd be panicking for sure,' she added.
Loving someone unconditionally
Meanwhile, Yong kickstarted his acting career with a small role in the 2019 Singaporean Mandarin series The Good Fight .
After making his breakthrough in the hit 2022 movie Ah Girls Go Army , he continued his rise with roles in films such as The King Of Musang King (2023) and I Not Stupid 3 (2024).
In 2023, he became the first Singaporean to land a spot on TC's Candler Global list of 100 Most Handsome Faces, ranking at 75.
Sharing a similar sentiment with Lim, Yong said working on Step Dave opened his eyes to the realities of parenting.

'And to all the first-time parents out there, even though you may not feel like it, your kids do appreciate you for doing your part for the family, so keep going,' he added.
Stepping into Dave's world also taught Yong what unconditional love truly means.
'If you watch the show, you will notice Dave's actions aren't logical, but he perseveres anyway simply because he loves Cara. Honestly, if I were a girl, I'd date Dave myself,' he said.
When asked about his thoughts on age gap relationships, Yong laughed and said he wouldn't mind dating someone older.
'I think we shouldn't care about what other people think... If you really love someone, just go for it,' he said.
As the conversation wrapped up, both Yong and Lim expressed hope that Step Dave would offer not just entertainment, but also comfort to those navigating unconventional relationships.
'I know there are some women who are in huge age gap relationships, so I hope they feel safe and seen when they watch it,' Yong said.
'If watching this helps even one couple feel seen or understood, then I think we've done something meaningful,' Lim added.
Step Dave airs every Sunday at 9.30pm on Astro AEC (Ch 306), Astro Go, On Demand and Sooka.

Singer JJ Lin reveals heart condition: 'How long can I continue to sing?'

JJ Lin completed the Beijing leg of his concert tour on July 13. Photo: JJ Lin/Instagram Singaporean singer JJ Lin disclosed on July 13 that he was diagnosed with a heart problem in April 2024 and has been on daily medication. The 44-year-old dropped the bombshell on the final day of his nine-day concert series at Beijing's National Stadium. He kicked off his JJ20 Final Lap World Tour in Singapore with two nights at the National Stadium in December 2024. This is an extension of his JJ20 World Tour, celebrating two decades since his debut, which ran from 2022 to 2024. The Final Lap tour has travelled to cities in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. 'The news really shocked me. I never thought that this would happen to me,' Lin said on stage. 'At that moment, I felt for the first time that the sands of time were slipping away fast. How long can I continue to sing for? This question suddenly became very real.' Addressing his fans and fighting back tears, the Mandopop star continued: 'You came from all over the world for more than 100 JJ20 performances. I believe that my efforts, the team's hard work and what we produced did not let you down.' Lin's revelation became a trending item on Chinese social media platform Weibo soon after his concert, with many fans expressing concern about his health. Some wrote that they had noticed him wearing what looked like a heart-rate monitor bracelet on his wrist recently. Fans also posted on Weibo videos of Lin clutching his stomach while he was performing the song No Turning Back (2020) towards the end of his concert on July 13. He turned his back to the audience for a while, looking like he was in pain, before facing them again and completing his performance. Lin's agency replied to media queries on his health, saying: 'He has been seeing a doctor regularly and will arrange for more time to rest after the tour. He will take good care of his health after completing the work on hand.' Lin revealed on his vlog in March 2024 that he had caught the flu before his first concert in Chengdu, China, but proceeded with the show. His condition worsened the next day, but he continued performing on the second night after being on an intravenous drip. During a break midway, he received oxygen therapy from an ambulance backstage. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

Subscribe to our FREE Forget the typical product launches with boring speeches and ribbon-cutting ceremonies. Connor's Stout Porter just rewrote the rulebook by throwing a 13-hour non-stop techno rave that landed them straight into the Malaysia Book of Records for the Longest Non-Stop Techno Music Event. On Saturday (12 July), Connor's Collective 2025 at Heritage Valley KL wasn't just another corporate event – it was a full-blown musical endurance test. From 11 AM sharp until the stroke of midnight, DJs kept the beats pumping without a single break, officially claiming the title for Malaysia's longest non-stop techno music event. The lineup featured an impressive roster of local and international talent, including Curzon, Mr Yang, AnnTo, Sutty, Gasing, Bebehatesyou, Shelhiel, Smooth Brain Girly, Suhsi, Sherrine, Vanns Ngo, Crinkle Cut, Odelia Tirza, Resort, Arvind Raj, Exclusive Pete, Karo, Novern, DJ Reeve, and Clef. Why Go This Hard for a Beer Launch? The marathon rave wasn't just for show – it perfectly captured Connor's new rebellious 'Made to Be Different' brand identity. The beer company is ditching its old 'Taste the Good Times' messaging for something grittier, targeting young Malaysians who are tired of conforming to expectations. 'We believe every get-together, no matter how big or small, deserves to be memorable,' explained Carlsberg Malaysia's Marketing Director, Olga Pulyaeva. Connor's x YOU: Makers of Good Times is more than just a campaign; it is an invitation for stout lovers to embrace the moment and create unforgettable memories and experiences. And we loved seeing how Malaysian fans made their good times with Connor's. Record-Breaking Vibes The event showcased underground DJs, indie bands, and young entrepreneurs – precisely the kind of rule-breakers Connor's wants to celebrate. Guests didn't just witness history being made; they danced through every single hour of it. Halfway, people were either completely exhausted or completely energised – there was no in-between. But somehow, everyone stayed until midnight to see them officially break the record. Beyond the non-stop beats, attendees honed their mixology skills at an exclusive cocktail workshop led by mixologist Angel Ji, unleashed their creativity through spray can art and graffiti photography sessions led by local street artist Yang, and expressed their bold style with henna tattoos and upcycling stations that transformed old items into cool pieces. More Than Just a Stunt The record-breaking event marks the beginning of Connor's broader campaign to connect with young adults who feel pressured to follow conventional paths. The brand has partnered with streetwear label Doubleback to create limited-edition convertible backpacks, priced at RM900 each, with 1,500 units available nationwide – a total prize pool of RM1.3 million. Connor's isn't stopping at record-breaking raves. The brand is rolling out its signature Whether you're into techno or not, Connor's just proved they're serious about their 'Made to Be Different' promise. In a market full of safe, predictable beer campaigns, throwing a record-breaking rave is definitely one way to stand out. Connor's Stout is available at bars, restaurants, supermarkets, and online platforms. But after this stunt, something tells us their next marketing move won't be your typical TV commercial either. Still hearing those beats? That's just the sound of marketing history being made. *For 21+ non-Muslims only. If you drink, don't drive. #CelebrateResponsibly Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . They don't just serve drinks—they tell stories, push techniques, and champion local flavours. Here are the 4 Malaysian bars that have earned their place on Asia's 50 Best Bars 2025 list: Penrose KL (No.10) Holding its title in the top ten, Penrose KL has quickly proven itself as a standout in the regional bar scene. Its bold, diverse menu and sharp attention to detail offer an experience unlike any other in Malaysia. Beyond the drinks, Penrose KL shines through with its atmosphere and hospitality. The space blends sleek, modern design with a warm, welcoming energy. Each visit feels intentional, whether you're seated at the bar or tucked into a booth. It's this thoughtful balance of craft and comfort that keeps guests coming back and industry eyes firmly on Penrose KL. THREE X CO (No.15) Making its way up the list every year is the famed THREE X CO. Rocketing up from its previous spot of No. 56, the bar has proven that it's more than just a one-time experience. Tailored to be a relaxing and intimate place for you to have a fun time and unwind after a long day, it maintains the traditions for cocktail making while not being afraid to push the boundaries and create completely new and playful ones. The intimate setting encourages connection, making it a favourite for relaxed evenings and special occasions alike. As it rises through the ranks, THREE X CO continues to redefine what a modern Malaysian bar can be. Bar Trigona (No.39) It's no surprise that the first Malaysian bar to enter the World's 50 Best Bars keeps shining. With expertly crafted drinks and one of the most intricately designed interiors around, it's the perfect spot for anyone seeking a standout cocktail experience. More than just great drinks, Bar Trigona champions sustainability and local pride by partnering with native honey producers. This connection not only supports Malaysia's ecosystem but also turns each visit into a chance to appreciate the vital role bees play, making every sip both delicious and meaningful. Reka:Bar (No.47) The only bar in Malaysia that makes you feel like you've travelled to the future makes an appearance on this list once again. Reka:Bar is widely known for its 'Domino Effect' chain, where each cocktail in a series of 12 cleverly shares and reuses ingredients from the drink before it, creating a continuous, evolving tasting experience. This inventive approach not only showcases the bar's creativity, but also highlights a commitment to sustainability in every pour. The bar's cutting-edge design complements its innovative drinks, creating a space that feels more like an art exhibit than a traditional lounge. Whether you're exploring new flavours or soaking in the vibe, Reka:Bar delivers an unforgettable journey for those looking to push the boundaries of cocktail culture. Rounding out Malaysia's impressive presence on this year's list, Coley KL and Backdoor Bodega have earned spots on the extended list of Asia's 100 Best Bars 2025—bringing the national total to six. It's a clear sign of the country's rising influence in the region, driven by creativity, craftsmanship, and a strong sense of identity.
