Warisan criticises GRS for failing to address poverty and waste in Sabah
Parti Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal ( pic ) criticised the government for making big promises without delivering real change to the people.
"Sabah is still the poorest state in Malaysia. Eight of the ten poorest districts in the country are here," he said in a statement on Wednesday (May 11).
Shafie warned that the state's budget might not hold up as it relies too heavily on oil revenue, projecting earnings based on a US$76 per-barrel price, while the current price is about US$60.
"If it stays that low, Sabah could lose hundreds of millions of ringgit. If that happens, what is GRS going to do? How will they ensure there is still money for schools, clinics, and roads in rural areas?" he asked.
He said that unemployment in Sabah remained high, with a rate of 7.9% at the end of 2024, the worst in the country, affecting more than 170,000 people.
"Even those with jobs are earning very low wages. Half of Sabah's workers take home less than RM2,000 a month," he added.
Shafie highlighted the rising cost of food and its impact on families, especially children, stressing that one in four children in Sabah under the age of five is stunted due to poor nutrition and healthcare.
He questioned the allocation of government funds, asking, "Is it really being used to help the people, or is it being wasted or taken by others?"
Shafie also addressed recent corruption cases, including a school principal allegedly making false claims for RM85,000 and two officers suspected of taking bribes worth over RM600,000.
He described the education system in Sabah as broken, with many teachers afraid to speak up.
He criticised the GRS government for excessive spending on events, banners, and lucky draws to appear popular.
"Millions are spent on publicity, while our roads are full of potholes, the electricity keeps going out, and prices keep going up. People are suffering.
"This is not real progress; it is a failure of planning and leadership. The people of Sabah deserve better," he stressed.
Shafie said Warisan aims to work with the people to build a better future, stating, "We want a government that is responsible, honest, and puts Sabahans first."

China starts construction of Tibet mega-dam
BEIJING: China started building a mega-dam Saturday on a river running through Tibet and India, with Premier Li Qiang attending the commencement ceremony, state media said. Beijing approved the project in December on the river – known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet and Brahmaputra in India – linking it to the country's carbon neutrality targets and economic goals in the Tibet region. "The electricity generated will be primarily transmitted to other regions for consumption, while also meeting local power needs in Tibet," state news agency Xinhua reported after the groundbreaking ceremony in southeastern Tibet's Nyingchi. Once built, the dam could dwarf the record-breaking Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in central China – and have a potentially serious impact on millions of people downstream in India and Bangladesh. The project will entail constructing five hydropower stations, with the total investment estimated to be around 1.2 trillion yuan (US$167.1 billion), Xinhua said. India said in January it had raised concerns with China about the project in Tibet, saying it will "monitor and take necessary measures to protect our interests." China "has been urged to ensure that the interests of the downstream states of the Brahmaputra are not harmed by activities in upstream areas", India's foreign ministry said then. In December, Beijing's foreign ministry said that the project would not have any "negative impact" downstream, adding that China "will also maintain communication with countries at the lower reaches" of the river. Besides downstream concerns, environmentalists have also warned about the irreversible impact of such mega projects in the ecologically sensitive Tibetan plateau. Both India and China, neighbours and rival Asian powers, share thousands of kilometres of disputed borders, where tens of thousands of soldiers are posted on either side.

Seven new bypass roads proposed across Tripura to boost connectivity: CM Manik Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], July 20 (ANI): In a major push towards infrastructure development, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that seven new bypass roads have been proposed across the state to ease traffic and enhance connectivity. CM Saha reiterated the government's commitment on Saturday to linking all district and subdivision headquarters, as well as unconnected habitations, to national highways via double-lane roads. CM Saha made these remarks while addressing the National Seminar on Infrastructure Development in the North-East Region of India, held at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala. He highlighted the government's long-term infrastructure vision, asserting that robust infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth and regional empowerment. 'Without infrastructure, nothing can be achieved. Roads, highways, airports, water supply, and urban infrastructure play a key role in industrial growth, service expansion, and social welfare,' the Chief Minister said. He emphasised that the state has undertaken numerous transformative initiatives in the past seven years that have significantly improved its socio-economic landscape. Saha revealed that a 449 km ring road has been proposed for Agartala under the Bharatmala scheme. The alignment includes the Agartala Bypass from Khayerpur to Amtali, an Eastern Bypass from Lembuchara to Khayerpur, and a Western Bypass connecting Lembuchara to Amtali. Flyover construction is also on the cards, with the Radhanagar to IGM Hospital flyover to be undertaken in the first phase. The seven new bypass roads are proposed at Kumargarh, Dhanpur, Manu, Ambassa, Teliamura, Ranirbazar, and Jirania, all key towns where national highways currently run through congested areas. 'In the previous budget, over Rs7,000 crore was allocated specifically for infrastructure development,' he added. Tripura CM provided detailed statistics on Tripura's existing road infrastructure, stating that the total Public Works Department (PWD) road length in the state is 10,618.423 kilometres. This includes 1,057 kilometres of state highways, 171 kilometres of major district roads, 483 kilometres of other district roads, 1,167 kilometres of urban roads, and 7,740 kilometres of village roads. The national highway network in the state spans 923 kilometres, out of which 509 kilometres have already been upgraded to double-lane roads with paved shoulders. Additionally, four more national highways covering a total distance of 229 kilometres have been declared in principle. Plans are in place to upgrade the entire 1,057 km of state highways to double-lane roads, he added. Highlighting Tripura's strategic importance, CM Saha said, 'The northeastern region is India's powerhouse with massive hydropower, petroleum, and gas potential. Tripura, sharing borders with Bangladesh, can serve as a vital gateway to Southeast Asia.' He also mentioned the nearing completion of the Light House Project, and construction of the Unity Mall and several high-rise departmental buildings, aimed at modernising Tripura's urban landscape. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Engineer Chinmay Debnath, Engineer O.P. Sri Lanka sacks top cop over Easter Sunday bombings failure
COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's National Police Commission has dismissed a senior officer for failing to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, which left 279 dead, including 45 foreigners. Nilantha Jayawardena (pic), former head of the State Intelligence Service (SIS), was found guilty on seven counts of negligence by a disciplinary inquiry. Court records reveal Jayawardena received warnings 17 days before the coordinated suicide attacks on April 21, 2019, targeting hotels and churches. Over 500 people were injured in the bombings. The Commission stated, 'Considering the gravity of the charges, the Commission decided to give him the maximum punishment.' Despite being removed as SIS chief after the attacks, Jayawardena was later promoted to deputy police chief before being placed on compulsory leave pending investigation. A high-level probe implicated former president Maithripala Sirisena and four officials, including Jayawardena, for criminal negligence. Following a Supreme Court order in 2023, they paid over US$1 million in damages to victims. The bombings were linked to a local jihadist group aligned with Islamic State.
