Inspired by ailing schoolmate, Gulliver dominates NSU to secure return to state

Miami Herald20-02-2025
There are always motivating factors in sports like pursuits of championships or personal milestones.
The Gulliver boys' soccer team has them in abundance as it chases a third consecutive state championship and 10th overall.
But this season, it's also been very much about Max.
Who's Max?
'Since the beginning of the season, this kid, Max, who is one of the younger students at our school, would come to every single game and practice,' Gulliver senior Nicolas Pineros said. 'So we got to know him and found out he has been battling cancer.'
Max Taylor is a sophomore at Gulliver Prep and honorary member of the two-time reigning state champions.
On Wednesday, Taylor was undergoing chemotherapy and couldn't watch the Raiders punch their ticket back to the state final four following a 2-0 victory over Davie NSU University School in the Region 4-3A final at Sean Taylor Memorial Field.
But the Raiders made sure his presence was felt.
Each player and some coaches and trainers wore white T-shirts with the name 'Max' on top of the number 77 - Taylor's favorite jersey number - before the game.
'It's really inspiring how much effort he puts into being here for every practice,' Pineros said. 'He's the earliest one here a lot of times and for the games. He's part of the team. He's not just a random kid. It feels great to get this win and hopefully he can come with us to states.'
Pineros and Tomas Bellatin made sure Gulliver could head back to DeLand next week when each scored goals in the first half.
Gulliver (19-2-2) will play Delray American Heritage on Monday at 1 p.m. in a Class 3A state semifinal at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand on Tuesday.
Less than a week after surviving an upset by SLAM Miami in the semifinals in penalty kicks, the Raiders took control early when Pineros scored by putting back a rebound that followed a header attempt by Taro Ochi.
Bellatin scored 18 minutes later on a cross from Pineros.
'Last game we had to play until the last whistle. But today from the beginning, we went 100 percent and we knew what we had to get done and we were able to get two goals in the back of the net,' Pineros said.
That was enough to put away the shorthanded Sharks (16-4-1), who were without top scorer Raul Leyva due to a one-game red card suspension drawn in their regional semifinal win over Downtown Doral, and Samuel Osorio, who was out with an ankle injury.
'I was very proud of their effort,' NSU coach Thiago Oliveira said. 'If I'm not mistaken, the first two clear-cut chances came from us and that's in spite of not having those two guys. That gave me a really good feeling, which I didn't have during warmups.'
This has been a season of perseverance for Gulliver, which graduated 23 seniors from last year's championship team. But the Raiders know it pales in comparison to the perseverance shown by Taylor, who has inspired them on another title run that now stands just two victories from coming to fruition.
'Somehow it gets more and more meaningful every time. This season, seeing the young boys develop shows a lot about the program,' Gulliver coach Scott Davidson said. 'It's a little easier to get into every tackle and run harder when you're tired, a little easier to do everything when you're inspired like these kids were today. We played all 22 guys in there today and I'm proud of that because they all felt like they were playing for Max.
'I think the last game (being down to the wire) made us feel good about ourselves because we knew we could fight through difficult circumstances and in a lot of ways you could say the same things about Max.'

How much could Cowboys net if they trade Micah Parsons?

The Jones family has played with fire for far too long. Eventually, their tired stall tactics designed to let them capitalize on being in the headlines while preferring to let contract money earn millions in interest instead of sitting in escrow would rub a star player the wrong way. Whether that time is now or not, their current superstar in the crosshairs has taken to the step of demanding a trade out of the organization. Micah Parsons has now gone public with that demand. Writing about a potential extension for Parsons has been a pastime at Cowboys Wire since last offseason. When that didn't happen in 2024, when a new deal apparently put behind the necessary extensions for QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb on the front office's agenda, most people neatly tucked it away to be atop the 2025 priority list. As the 2024 season concluded, interviews with Parsons clarified that he wasn't going to look to break the bank, but wanted to spend the rest of his career playing for the team he grew up rooting for. But that deal didn't happen during the period between the Super Bowl and the start of the new league year. When negotiations didn't move forward, trade ideas surrounding Parsons and the 2025 draft took over the "potential" landscape. But when the draft came and went, attention was returned to discussions about just how much he would make when the two sides eventually came together. Now, as training camp is well underway and Parsons' hold-in approaches the third week, he's officially demanded to be traded. The easiest comparison to a Parsons trade comes in the form of the Khalil Mack swap from last decade. Mack, 27 and a three-time Pro Bowler and former Defensive Player of the Year, was getting ready to play on his fifth-year option. The then-Oakland Raiders traded him to the Chicago Bears in exchange for multiple high pedigree picks, including two first rounders. The Bears quickly extended Mack, making him the highest-paid defender in league history at the time. Parsons, 25, has been a better player than Mack was at that point in his career. Not only is he two years younger, but he's a four-time Pro Bowler, was top-three in DPOY three times to Mack's one, and is a three-time All-Pro (to Mack's one) and was the defensive rookie of the year. Parsons also has position flex, capable of being both an edge rusher and off-ball linebacker. It stands to reason he'd be worth more in a trade than Mack, and still be signed to a record-setting deal by his acquiring team. This is an argument most recently fleshed out on Cowboys Wire back in March, and was recently echoed by ESPN's Bill Barnwell. The net value of the Mack trade was just under two first rounders for Mack, as Oakland send a second rounder to Chicago with him and brought back a third and a fifth rounder in addition to those two firsts. Parsons is more than likely able to command two firsts from a handful of teams expected to finish at the bottom of the standings, but any team that has realistic playoff aspirations is likely going to have to pony up more than those two first rounders for a legitimate generational talent. Raiders training camp notebook 8/1: No. 2 TE shows out with Brock Bowers sidelined

When the Raiders took the field today, they were in helmets and shells. Shedding the pads for the first time since they first donned them early this week. One notable player who wasn't even in a helmet was Brock Bowers. The All Pro second year tight end warmed up with the team and was on the field for all drills and team sessions, but didn't take part. This could be injury related, or just a day off. We will have a better indication come tomorrow when they practice a mock game at Allegiant Stadium. Today, however, with Bowers watching, his number two took center stage. And he showed out. Michael Mayer had himself a day. He caught shook defenders and caught everything thrown his way. The first catch he made was with cornerback Jakorian Bennett guarding him. Mayer got the inside on Bennett and Geno Smith threw a dart as Mayer finished it off for a touchdown. Later in practice he made another touchdown catch, this time breaking wide open for it. Mayer was also doing work close to the lilne of scrimmage, catching a couple passes in the flat. One he snagged just past the outstretched arms of a defender. The the other he juggled a bit, but hauled it in without breaking stride. This isn't a one-off for Mayer. He caught a couple touchdowns in Thursday's padded practice as well. Mayer was the team's pick at 35 overall in the second round a couple years ago. After a so-so rookie campaign, the Raiders had the chance to get Brock Bowers in the draft, and couldn't pass it up. Mayer wouldn't be afforded the opportunity to make that second-year leap with a generational talent ahead of him. Bowers gave the Raiders the best tight end in the league. Mayer has the opportunity to give the Raiders the best tight end room in the NFL. Number two tight ends are valuable. And not just as potential replacements.

Tom Brady makes first appearance at Raiders training camp as minority owner

There was a Goat on the field today in Henderson. With the Raiders practicing, they had minority owner Tom Brady taking in the action. Several current Raiders players were teammates with Brady. Including WR Jakobi Meyers, LB Elandon Roberts, DT Adam Butler, LB Devin White, and G Alex Cappa. All five won Super Bowls with Brady, the latter two were on his team in Tampa. For that matter, so was the Raiders GM John Spytek who was the Bucs' assistant GM that year. Brady just retired from the NFL two seasons ago, so there are a good many players on this team who faced him on the field as well. These days, however, he is in an advisory role. As minority owner he literally has a stake in the success of the frnachise. And with his breadth of knowledge and respect as a seven-time Super Bowl champion, he has the ear of Raiders brass whenever they ask for his opinion on adding players. And for the first time -- at least for a media attended practice -- he watched some of those players on the practice field.
