Greece declares state of emergency as out-of-control wildfires rip through island for third day
Towering walls of flames tore through forest and agricultural land on the island, where authorities have sent firefighting reinforcements from Athens, the northern city of Thessaloniki and the nearby island of Lesbos.
By Tuesday morning, the fire department said 444 firefighters with 85 vehicles were tackling the blaze on scattered fronts.
Eleven helicopters and two water-dropping planes were providing air support.
Emergency services have issued evacuation orders for villages and settlements in the area since Sunday, when fires broke out near the island's main town.
Apocalyptic scenes captured in images and videos showed firefighters battling the flames as the wildfires raged on, while thick plumes of black smoke filled the sky.
Other footage showed helicopters spraying water over smoke-filled fields.
The fire department has sent an arson investigation team to Chios to examine the cause of the blaze.
'We are faced with simultaneous fires in multiple, geographically unconnected parts of the island - a pattern that cannot be considered coincidental,' Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Giannis Kefalogiannis said Monday from Chios.
Authorities, he said, were 'very seriously examining the possibility of an organized criminal act, in other words arson.'
The minister said police forces on the island had been reinforced, while military patrols had been doubled.
'Whoever thinks that they can play with the lives of citizens and cause chaos with premeditated actions will be led to court,' Kefalogiannis said.
'Arson is a serious crime and will be dealt with as such.'
Chios is in the midst of tourist season and authorities also want to prevent the fires reaching areas famous for producing mastiha, a natural resin harvested from mastic trees.
The popular tourist destination was ravaged by wildfires last summer after a prolonged drought, which saw holidaymakers being forced to evacuate the island after the flames 'turned the sky black with smoke.'
Greece, Europe's southernmost tip, is often hit by wildfires during its hot and dry summers but authorities have blamed a fast-changing climate for fuelling more destructive blazes in recent years.

In 2018, a massive fire swept through the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, trapping people in their homes and on roads as they tried to flee.
More than 100 died, including some who drowned trying to swim away from the flames.
Athens has paid out hundreds of millions of euros in damages related to extreme weather to households and farmers and to update firefighting equipment.
It has a record of 18,000 firefighters this year in anticipation of a challenging fire season.

Husband's frantic search for Brit wife missing in Greece after waking up from sunbed & finding she had disappeared
A GREEK man launched a frantic search for his Brit wife after she mysteriously vanished from a beach while he was asleep. Michele Ann Joy Bourda, 59, disappeared from the Ofrynio beach in Kavala - sparking a huge search operation by the authorities in Greece. 4 She is believed to have gone to the beach with her husband, who was reportedly asleep when the woman disappeared. When he woke up, the woman was nowhere to be found, according to local media reports. The husband is said to have frantically asked for help from locals to find his wife when he realised she was missing. A local shop owner told Protothema: "The couple were together and at some point the husband fell asleep, and it seems that the wife went in to swim. "When the husband woke up and didn't see her next to him, he came to the store and asked us if we had seen his wife, who had disappeared." The shopkeeper added that the husband seemed to be "stressed". Mrs Bourda was last seen wearing a two-piece beaded swimsuit, yellow beach shoes, and red sunglasses, according to authorities. A Silver Alert was issued after authorites failed to locate the woman and said there are "no signs of her". Greek cops say they are stumped by the "very odd" disappearance of the Brit woman. After four days of search operations, Cops said that it was highly unusual that the Brit was still not found. Brit tourist missing after flying to Tenerife three weeks ago but never returning as cops launch huge search One well-placed source told The Sun: "It's very odd that after so many days, nothing has been found. "The coast guard has not ruled out currents and winds somehow playing a role, but still it is highly unusual." Another official said: "We now have to ask why she continued swimming out so far." A sports instructor earlier claimed that he saw a woman who resembled Mrs Bourda swimming in deep waters near the beach. He claimed to have asked the Brit not to go any further, LBC reports. The Greek coast guards today paused the operation, with search efforts now being taken over by the country's police force. Officials said a full-scale police probe would continue to be conducted into how the Brit mysteriously disappeared. A spokesman said: "The search to locate the missing person will now fall to the responsibility of the police." 4 On late Monday, a Hellenic coast guard spokesperson confirmed to The Sun that the search had not only expanded across a much larger area but would continue. They said: "Patrol boats are now focused on the entire Strymonian Gulf and it will continue. There is no change in this operation." A coast guard official previously said that the Brit had been "residing temporarily" in Serres, northern Greece. The British embassy in Greece also issued an alert notice saying: "Michele Ann BOURDA went missing on 01/08/2025 at the beach of Ofrynio in Kavala. "On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes, and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger." It is believed that part of the beach from where she disappeared is surrounded by extensive crops, houses and a large reservoir.

Massive search for British woman who went missing in Greece as her husband slept
A massive search is under way for a British woman who went missing from a beach in northern Greece. Michele Ann Joy Bourda, 59, disappeared from her sunbed while her husband slept on Ofrynio beach near Kavala, according to reports. The Hellenic Coastguard said the port authority received reports of a missing person on the evening of Aug 1. Mrs Bourda's family soon raised the alarm but police have so far been unable to find her as fears for her life grow. She had been swimming at about 12pm on Friday and was last seen wearing a two-piece swimsuit featuring rhinestones, yellow beach shoes and sunglasses with red bone frames. 'Her life is in danger' Lifeline Hellas, a Greek missing persons charity, issued a Silver Alert on Saturday after the police were unable to locate her. The charity's alert said: 'Her life is in danger. If you know anything, contact the Silver Alert service, 24 hours a day, at the National SOS Line 1065.' Mrs Bourda is described as having straight blonde hair down to her shoulders, hazel eyes, 5ft 6in tall and of slim build. The Hellenic Coastguard is reportedly conducting a search operation at sea and investigating reports that her belongings were left on the beach. On Sunday, three recreational craft, five fishing boats and two patrol boats were involved in the search, according to Sky News. Local media reported that Mrs Bourda lived with her husband, who is thought to be of Greek origin, in nearby Serres. The British embassy in Greece shared a notice on Facebook which read: 'Michele Ann Bourda went missing on Aug 1 2025 at the beach of Ofrynio near Kavala. 'On the day she went missing, she was wearing a swimsuit with decorative stones, yellow water shoes and red plastic sunglasses. Her life is in danger.' It comes after a 60-year-old British tourist went missing while on holiday in the country last month. He was last seen in Tristomo, a village on the island of Karpathos, and his car was abandoned in 38C heat. Michael Mosley, the television doctor, died after going missing while walking on the Greek island of Symi last summer. The broadcaster and columnist's body was found after a four-day search in June 2024. CCTV footage appeared to show him falling over close to where his body was eventually located. Crispin Butler, the senior coroner for Buckinghamshire, said that Mosley's death was 'most likely attributable either to heatstroke (accidental) or [a] non-identified pathological cause'. Meanwhile, a 48-year-old British tourist was found dead after going missing on Theologos beach on the island of Rhodes. He was reported to have been on holiday with his family and went for a swim with his niece, who left early to return to the hotel.
