Brazil's court to make social media firms legally accountable for user posts
The ruling will come after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned of possible visa restrictions against foreign officials allegedly involved in censoring American citizens. One such official is reportedly Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has taken measures against social media outlets he deemed to have not complied with Brazilian law.The only dissenting Brazilian justice so far is Andr Mendona and his vote was made public last week. The court is yet to decide how such regulations will be enacted.advertisementMendona said free speech on social media is key for the publication of information that 'holds powerful public institutions to account, including governments, political elites and digital platforms.'Justice Flvio Dino, the first to vote on Wednesday, reminded his colleagues that recent cases of school shootings in Brazil were created on social media. He read out postings by one user who said he was happy by watching families of dead children 'weeping, bleeding, dying.''I think social media have not made humanity closer to what it has produced in best fashion,' he said. The social media proposal would become law once voting is finished and the result is published. But Brazil's Congress could still pass another law to reverse the measure. The current legislation states that social media companies can only be held responsible if they do not remove hazardous content after a court order.Public debate on regulating social networks increased in Brazil in the aftermath of the Jan. 8 riot in 2023, when supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro ransacked Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in the capital, Braslia.Platforms need to be proactive in regulating content, said Alvaro Palma de Jorge, a law professor at the Rio-based Getulio Vargas Foundation, a think tank and university.advertisement'They need to adopt certain precautions that are not compatible with simply waiting for a judge to eventually issue a decision ordering the removal of that content,' Palma de Jorge said.Wednesday's ruling brings Brazil's approach to big tech closer to the European Union's approach, which has sought to rein in the power of social media companies and other digital platforms.Rendering platforms automatically accountable for content on their platforms may infringe freedom of speech as they could resort to preemptively removing content, according to the Sao-Paulo based Brazilian Chamber of Digital Economy, an organization that represents sectors of the digital economy.'This type of liability favors large companies with robust legal structures, to the detriment of smaller, national players, which negatively impacts competition,' said the organization, adding that the decision may increase barriers to innovation.Must Watch

Ridiculous: Trump warns Musk's America Party will only bring disruption and chaos
A day after billionaire Elon Musk announced the launch of a new political party called the America Party, President Donald Trump called Elon's move ridiculous and could add to confusion."I think it's ridiculous to start a third party. We have a tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but it's always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to confusion," Trump told reporters. "It really seems to have been developed for two parties. Third parties have never worked, so he can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous."advertisementOn Truth Social, Trump wrote that he is saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely off the rails essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks. He wrote: "He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States - The System seems not designed for them. The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds! Republicans, on the other hand, are a smooth running 'machine,' that just passed the biggest Bill of its kind in the History of our Country.""Republicans, on the other hand, are a smooth running 'machine,' that just passed the biggest Bill of its kind in the History of our Country. It is a Great Bill but, unfortunately for Elon, it eliminates the ridiculous Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, which would have forced everyone to buy an Electric Car in a short period of time. I have been strongly opposed to that from the very beginning. People are now allowed to buy whatever they want - Gasoline Powered, Hybrids (which are doing very well), or New Technologies as they come about - No more EV Mandate. I have campaigned on this for two years and, quite honestly, when Elon gave me his total and unquestioned Endorsement, I asked him whether or not he knew that I was going to terminate the EV Mandate - It was in every speech I made, and in every conversation I had. He said he had no problems with that - I was very surprised!" he expressed concern over Elon Musk's request to appoint a close friend -- someone involved in the space industry -- to lead NASA. Trump said he was surprised to learn the individual had no prior ties to the Republican Party and believed it would have been inappropriate due to Musk's significant business interests connected to NASA. He emphasised that his top priority was always to protect the American fired back by saying, "Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration."Trump's comments come after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Musk should focus on managing his companies instead of getting involved in on CNN's State of the Union, Bessent said, "The principles of Doge were very popular – I think if you looked at the polling Elon was not." He was referring to the Department of Government Efficiency, or "Doge", which Musk led briefly after Donald Trump started his second presidential term in his time in that role, Musk pushed through deep budget cuts and job losses across several government departments. The harsh measures didn't sit well with the public and drew widespread criticism. The sales at Tesla also dropped, and investors were reportedly unhappy with Musk's split focus between his businesses and I believe that the boards of directors at his various companies wanted him to come back and run those companies," Bessent said. "I imagine that those boards of directors did not like this announcement yesterday, and will be encouraging him to focus on his business activities, not his political activities."MUSK'S BID TO COUTER TRUMPEarlier, Musk announced that he is launching "America Party" on Saturday night with posts on his platform X. He criticised both political parties and went after Donald Trump's new tax and spending bill."When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,' Musk posted. 'Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom."Musk has repeatedly criticised Trump's economic policies. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill Trump signed would raise the US deficit by $3.3 trillion by 2034. The bill includes large tax cuts for the rich and cuts to welfare programs, which could cause millions of Americans to lose their health relationship between Musk and Trump has become tense. After Musk's recent attacks on Trump's policies, Trump responded by suggesting he might "look into" deporting the South African-born billionaire. Trump also hinted that he could reduce government contracts for Musk's companies, including is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible?" Trump joked to reporters earlier this VOWS TO CHALLENGE US POLITICAL SYSTEMDespite the controversy, Musk says his new party is serious. Although he shared few details, Musk hinted that the America Party would aim to influence Congress by focusing on a few key Senate and House races. He believes this could give the party enough votes to influence major laws."Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people," he also shared a poll on X asking followers whether they wanted to break away from the two-party system. He said the results showed two out of three voters supported the later posts, Musk brought up his earlier feud with Trump, including a deleted post linking Trump's name to documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. He also questioned why only Ghislaine Maxwell was in prison and not others involved in underage sex was no immediate comment from the White House," the article noted, but the growing rift between Musk and Trump is once poured over $275 million of his own money in order to help Trump win re-election. But now, with his new political party and sharp attacks on Trump's policies, the two former allies have become political opponents.- EndsWith inputs from Agencies Tune InTrending Reel

Little food: Congress leader flags abuse in Bengal rehab centre to Mamata Banerjee
Congress leader and former Union Minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding a thorough investigation into alleged malpractices and inhumane treatment at de-addiction centres across the the letter, Chowdhury alleged that some police stations are financially involved with certain de-addiction centres and that 'looting is taking place in the name of de-addiction.' He wrote, 'There is information that some police stations have financial dealings with certain de-addiction centres and looting is taking place in the name of de-addiction. People kept in these centres are subjected to severe mental torture.'advertisementChowdhury also detailed serious instances of abuse and torture within these centres. 'Those who are put in and stay in the Punishment Room face brutal abuse. They are given very little food, and four people are forced to bathe together naked, that too within a time span of 1 to 2 minutes,' he said. Chaudhary further claimed that the inmates lack basic human rights and hygiene facilities. 'The inmates do not have enough space to sleep properly, and are not allowed to use the toilet whenever they need to, with access allowed only once every 3 hours, and that too, for a short duration. They are made to drink water from the tube-well which is foul-smelling and unhygienic,' Chowdhury also accused the centres of extorting the families of the inmates. 'When a family member visits an inmate, a fee of Rs 400 is charged for the meeting. In the case of each in-mate, exorbitant amounts of money are demanded, ranging from Rs 8,000 in some cases to Rs 24,000, which can stretch up to even Rs 47,000. At the time of release, an additional Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 is charged. Thus, basically, they extract as much money as they possibly can from each person,' the letter that many of the people admitted to these centres have no history of drug use, Chowdhury said, 'There are many innocent people who have no involvement with drug use whatsoever and are yet falsely implicated and sent to these 'homes'. Huge sums of money are being earned by those running the centres, with the connivance of those in Authority.'He specifically named Disha Home in Berhampore, located near Panchanantala, as one of the centres allegedly involved in such concluded his letter by urging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#West Bengal

Bilawal Bhutto's extradition 'offer' sparks LeT row
Bilawal Bhutto (File photo) NEW DELHI: Former Pakistani foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto 's comments on offering extradition of wanted Pakistani terrorists to India seems to have hit a raw nerve with Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed 's son Talha. Reacting sharply to remarks Bhutto made in a recent interview, Talha accused him of making an "irresponsible offer". Instead of offering extradition of Pakistani citizens, Talha said Pakistan govt should be demanding the extradition of Indian leaders. He also questioned Bhutto's credibility, alleging that his family has a history of towing the Western and Indian narrative against Pakistan. During the interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera on Friday, Bhutto had asserted that his country had no objection to extraditing terrorists like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar to India as a "confidence-building measure". Pakistan is ready to extradite "individuals of concern" to India provided New Delhi showed "willingness" to cooperate in the process, Bhutto had said while responding to a question about extraditing LeT chief Saeed and Jaish-e-Muhammed kingpin Masood Azhar as a gesture of good faith. In a video issued on Sunday, Talha claimed that Bhutto's statement about his father had brought shame to Pakistan globally. "Bilawal Bhutto's suggestion to hand over his father to India, a hostile country, is unacceptable and will be opposed by us and our community," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Show Off Your Talent: Enter the Ultimate Creator Contest!
