Man Utd rule out breaking bank for new No9 with Rasmus Hojlund backed to flourish in new system with Cunha and Mbeumo

United have already missed out on a host of striker targets this summer LUND OF HOPE... AND GLORY? Man Utd rule out breaking bank for new No9 with Rasmus Hojlund backed to flourish in new system with Cunha and Mbeumo MANCHESTER United have ruled out breaking the bank to bring in a new No9. United fans were hoping Alexander Isak's decision to tell Newcastle he wants out of St James' Park might encourage the Old Trafford hierarchy to muscle in on the deal. 5 Ruben Amorim is ready to stick by Rasmus Hojlund as his No9 next season Credit: Reuters 5 Man Utd don't currently have the funds to try sign Alexander Isak, who has made it clear he wants to leave Newcastle Credit: Getty But with United's spending on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo having already topped £130m this summer, the club is not in a position to go large unless there are significant exits. United already missed out on Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres - who opted for Chelsea and Arsenal respectively. And they have now been linked with possible moves for Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins. Sunsport revealed how Chelsea's Senegalese star Nicolas Jackson was also eyeing Old Trafford as a potential destination, with the Blues wanting £80m for his services. But United's current position is that there is no wriggle room for another big money signing at this stage, meaning they will not even try to gatecrash Liverpool's £120m move for Swedish star Isak. And the decision not to push the boat out opens the door for under-pressure Rasmus Hojlund to stake his claim during the three-match Premier League Summer Series tournament against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton. Hojlund, who has struggled to justify his £72m price-tag, scoring just 14 Prem goals in 62 games since arriving from Atalanta, has been linked with Juventus, Napoli, Milan, Inter and Roma this summer. United chief Ruben Amorim, though, looks set to give the Dane, 22, a final chance to show he can be the Old Trafford spearhead. 5 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS Amorim believes the arrivals of Cunha and Mbeumo will give United a new attacking dynamism, allowing Hojlund to flourish in front of goal. But the call by the club to put a new striker signing on hold will frustrate some supporters who have looked on enviously as Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City have all spent big ahead of the new campaign. 5 Man Utd hunting Jackson as Chelsea's demands revealed | Transfers Exposed 5 TRANSFER NEWS LIVE - KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

Wimbledon star worth millions wants to go on a date with a tennis fan – 'DM me'

Leylah Fernandez took to social media with a bold request, turning her attention to dating after a disappointing Wimbledon display by calling on her fans to ask her out Wimbledon star Leylah Fernandez is on the lookout for love and has invited one of her followers to 'shoot their shot' by asking her out on a date in Montreal. The Canadian tennis ace took to Instagram to share a video with her 349,000 followers, encouraging them to slide into her DMs as she tends to stay away from dating apps. ‌ The 22-year-old addressed them by writing: 'This will be fun, right? This isn't a joke. I fully intend to go on a date in Montreal so go ahead and DM me… time to shoot your shot. PS: you may have to meet my dad beforehand (good luck with that).' ‌ She elaborated on her bizarre 'competition' in a follow-up clip, saying: "In Montreal, I would like to go on a date. You know what I really want to do and that I haven't done is going on a date. I am not a big fan of dating apps. ‌ 'So, I actually am gonna do things my way. I am gonna go on one date for one hour in Montreal. If you wanna be my date, DM me, let me know about yourself. See you there!' Fernandez, who according to Forbes had earned $6.5million (£4.8m) last year as the 18th highest-paid female athlete, later offered an update after getting past rising Australian star Maya Joint in her opening round match at the Citi Open in Washington DC. "There've been a lot of responses,' said the former World No. 13. 'I think the first day, there were maybe over 100 messages. I've got a lot of options. My dad point blank asked me if I'd gone on a date yet, and I told him I hadn't. "I've never really had the time, and no one's really asked me, which, I don't know why! He suggested I post a video on Instagram and have a date in Montréal where you feel at home and you feel comfortable. "I got responses from other athletes, including ones I went to the Olympics with, and they told me, 'I know how you feel,' or, 'When I was 22, I hadn't gone on a date yet, either.' ‌ "At this age, we're all either studying or going to sports competitions, so reading those messages not only makes me feel better and like I'm not the odd one out, but it's also pretty cool that we're able to have those conversations together." The request comes just weeks after Fernandez's underwhelming performance at Wimbledon. The world No. 36 easily defeated Great Britain's Hannah Klugman with a 6-1 6-3 victory in the opening round, reports the Express. However, she suffered an unexpected second round exit after losing to Laura Siegemund in straight sets, 6-2 6-3. Fernandez also teamed up with New Zealand's Lulu Sun for the doubles event. ‌ But they too endured an early exit, losing in the first round to Demi Schuurs and Asia Muhammad, who themselves were eliminated in the next round. Fernandez has had a shaky few months, with early departures from the French Open and Wimbledon indicating that she's not currently playing at her best. However, she set up a round-of-16 clash with world No. 4 Jessica Pegula by beating Joint. The hard-court tournament could provide Fernandez with an opportunity to find her groove before she heads back to Montreal. And victory would certainly give her something to chat about with any potential date back in her home country.

‘A novel to be swept away by': Lucy Steeds wins Waterstones debut fiction prize for The Artist

Lucy Steeds has won the 2025 Waterstones debut fiction prize for her novel The Artist, which has been praised for its 'atmospheric, sensory prose.' Set in an artist's household in 1920s Provence, the novel follows aspiring English journalist Joseph Adelaide, reclusive painter Edouard Tartuffe and his niece Ettie, who has her own hidden artistic ambitions. 'With lavish, luxurious description, Steeds evokes the sensory environment: the smell of hot earth, the sound of crickets, sunlight on soft yellow stones, 'a constellation of fireflies … spreading and regrouping like a net of stars,'' wrote Christobel Kent in a Guardian review of the novel. 'Her characterisation too is vivid and sure-footed: the anguished Joseph, the fiercely determined Ettie, and at the centre of his shadowy lair, the great tortured brute Tata – half Cyclops, half Minotaur – each of them groping towards artistic expression.' Steeds will receive £5,000 and a 'promise of ongoing commitment' to her writing career. The Artist was selected from a shortlist of six books which also featured Confessions by Catherine Airey, Saraswati by Gurnaik Johal, Ordinary Saints by Niamh Ní Mhaoileoin, Sunstruck by William Rayfet Hunter, and When the Cranes Fly South by Lisa Ridzén. The winner was chosen by a panel of booksellers informed by votes and feedback from more than 650 booksellers from Waterstones shops. Bea Carvalho, head of books at Waterstones, said Steeds' novel 'stood out for its atmospheric, sensory prose, and its headily evocative sense of time and place. 'This is a gorgeously claustrophobic novel to be fully swept away by: The Artist has something for readers of all tastes and heralds the arrival of an exciting new voice. We can't wait to see what Lucy Steeds does next.' Steeds, who is originally from north London, began writing the novel while living in France. Commenting on the inspiration behind the novel, she said she was 'fascinated by the concept of art monsters. These tyrannical figures who act abominably to the people around them in order to create great art. Literary delights delivered direct to you after newsletter promotion 'I was less interested in the art we've gained from these monsters, and more interested in the art we've lost. What could have been created if these tyrants weren't crushing everyone around them?' Waterstones launched the prize in 2022, celebrating the best work of debut fiction written in any form. Previous winners of the prize include Alice Winn and Ferdia Lennon, who won last year for his novel Glorious Exploits, which went on to win the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize and The Authors' Club 2025 best first novel award.
