#SHOWBIZ: Eurodance legend returns to Malaysia after 30 years
RENOWNED for his infectious Eurodance and reggae hits, the legendary Nigerian-Swedish singer Dr Alban recently returned to Malaysia after three decades. The 67-year-old artiste headlined the much-anticipated Dr Alban Live in Malaysia concert at Zepp Kuala Lumpur. This performance marked his first show in the country since his 1994 showcase. Dr Alban, whose full name is Alban Uzoma Nwapa, has been active in the music industry since the 1980s. He initially became a deejay at a Stockholm club to finance his dentistry course at Lund University. In 1990, he met acclaimed producer Denniz Pop from the SweMix label. Teaming up with Pop and rapper Leila K, he released his debut single, 'Hello Afrika', marking the beginning of his illustrious music career. It was at this time that he adopted the stage name Dr Alban, a nod to his background in dentistry. His debut album featured breakout hits such as 'Hello Afrika' and 'No Coke', both of which became million-selling singles. The album achieved significant commercial success, earning gold certification in several countries, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Dr Alban's success reached new heights with the release of his second album, 'One Love', in 1992. This album featured major European hits like 'It's My Life' and 'Sing Hallelujah'. The single, 'It's My Life', became a chart-topping sensation, reaching No. 1 in countries such as Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany, and securing the No. 2 spot in Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. A WARM WELCOME BACK When he met reporters during his recent visit, the singer described Malaysia as a "great country", just as he remembered it from his first showcase in 1994. "Malaysia is very nice, warm, the people are nice, and the service is great. It's great to be here again because the hospitality is also good. "So, I'm grateful to be able to make money, travel, have fun, and meet so many people like you after 30 years. So, I'm happy and grateful to be able to do this, thank you, because all of this is so great." At the concert, held at Zepp Kuala Lumpur last month, Dr Alban delivered a vibrant selection of his hit numbers. Organised by Mojo Projects in collaboration with Tuff & Loud, the event offered fans an engaging performance concept with various entertaining elements. The songs performed had dominated international music charts in the 1990s. The event also featured retro DJ performances, a 1990s-themed activity zone, unique visuals, and various creative elements that effectively evoked the atmosphere of that era. REVIVING RETRO MUSIC Meanwhile, Mojo Projects CEO Ratna K. Nadarajan also spoke at the press conference, stating that the Rewind & Play Experience with Dr Alban was the company's first English concert. According to Ratna, choosing Dr Alban to perform in Malaysia aimed to revive the retro music that the star once popularised. "We feel this segment has not been fully explored and there are many retro artistes who will definitely be successful in Malaysia.

Tencent-owned Supercell to launch titles like Clash Royale as WeChat mini games
The video game Brawl Stars is already available within WeChat, while Clash Royale will exclusively launch on the messaging app in September. — SCMP Finnish video game studio Supercell, developer of Clash Royale and Brawl Stars , is set to launch its popular titles on Tencent Holdings' WeChat as installation-free mini games, leveraging the super app's vast user base. Jakub Barczyk, business and operations lead for Supercell's Clash of Clans , said on Wednesday that Brawl Stars was already available on WeChat, known as Weixin in mainland China, while Clash Royale was 'currently being developed' for a September release on the WeChat mini-game platform. He made the remarks during a live-streamed session at a WeChat event in Chongqing. Helsinki-based Supercell 'is focusing on seamless integration between the platform and mobile games, enabling effortless switching through synchronised assets', Barczyk said. 'This approach accommodates both existing players, ensuring their progress is saved, and new players, who will benefit from a streamlined experience.' 'This strategy aims to seamlessly integrate Supercell's popular games into the everyday routines of Chinese users through WeChat, providing easy access with classic experiences,' he added. Barczyk said Supercell was focusing on WeChat mini games because of the rapid growth of the market and the rising popularity of lightweight games that can be played almost instantly without downloading a separate app. Since WeChat launched mini games in 2018, which run entirely within the super app, they have amassed 500 million monthly active users. Over 300 mini games had achieved quarterly sales of more than 10mil yuan (RM 5.89mil or US$1.4mil), according to WeChat data released on Wednesday. The move marks another partnership between the two companies since Tencent acquired an 84% stake in Supercell for US$8.6bil in 2016. That year, Clash Royale integrated its login system with Tencent's WeChat and QQ, another messaging app popular among teenagers, allowing users to see their friends' activity and rankings. Gaming has long been a key pillar for Tencent, which operates the world's largest video gaming business by revenue. It recorded a 23% jump in first-quarter revenue to reach 16.6bil yuan (RM 9.78bil) , which was 'driven by growth in revenues from Brawl Stars , Clash Royale and PUBG Mobile .' Investing in video game developers overseas has been a primary growth strategy for Tencent. Besides Supercell, Tencent holds a roughly 40% stake in US-based developer Epic Games, maker of Fortnite , and wholly owns League of Legends developer Riot Games. – South China Morning Post

(Photo by Matti Matikainen/Xinhua) HELSINKI, June 21 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Thousands gathered on Helsinki's Seurasaari Island Friday evening to celebrate Juhannus Eve, marking the start of Finland's cherished Midsummer Festival with bonfires and folk traditions, reported Xinhua. Held at the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, the event recreated countryside-style celebrations for locals and visitors. Festivities began at around 6:30 pm local time with the raising of a maypole adorned with ribbons and greenery, a symbol of fertility and renewal. Throughout the evening, the crowd enjoy folk dancing, wreath-making, stilt walking, Finnish delicacies, and local crafts. bootstrap slideshow At dusk, several ceremonial bonfires were lit along the shore. Music and laughter continue late into the night. "Juhannus is about light, nature, and togetherness," said festivalgoer Miikka Heikinen. "It's the heart of the Finnish summer." Midsummer, officially observed on the Saturday between June 20 and 26, marks the longest day of the year. In northern Finland, the sun barely sets, while the south experiences only brief twilight. The Seurasaari Midsummer celebration dates back over a century and has been organised annually since 1956. Beyond Seurasaari, Helsinki offers additional Juhannus events, from nostalgic dance nights to scenic ferry rides and traditional saunas. Yet for many, the holiday is best spent at lakeside cottages, savoring nature and the glow of the midnight sun. --BERNAMA-XINHUA
