The downside of Duchess of Sussex's success was her 'intense jealousy', royal author claims - as Meghan's estranged father celebrates his birthday this week

Daily Mail15-07-2025
Like a lot of young girls growing up in Los Angeles, Meghan Markle yearned for a career in Hollywood.
Luckily for the future Duchess her 'famous' father - Thomas Markle - worked in the industry as a lighting director and gave her a leg up other aspiring actresses could only dream of.
And yet, Meghan's career in tinseltown was not the dazzling success her fellow LA natives enjoyed - such as Angelina Jolie or Leonardo DiCaprio.
In his bombshell royal fly-on-the-wall book, Revenge, Tom Bower wrote that her 'intense jealousy, especially if someone else got the lead part' left a negative legacy on her career.
He said: 'One downside of Meghan's success was her intense jealousy, especially if someone else got the lead part.
'Meghan became particularly irritated after one girl at [her school] was employed by a Hollywood studio as an actress.'
It was a character trait that her father noticed while she was still in school. Telling Mr Bower that his daughter 'wants to be the star of the stage' and 'the star in life'.
The doting father obeyed all of Meghan's wishes in her pursuit of becoming an actress.
This included paying a professional photographer to take a headshot of Meghan which Thomas then 'dutifully' circulated to producers though they received no reply.
At 17, Meghan got a taste of the red carpet when she joined her father at the Emmy awards where he was nominated for best lighting director.
'Like so many in the town, Meghan loved glamour and celebrity. She wanted her dream to become reality,' Mr Bower wrote.
But Thomas and Meghan eventually found themselves at loggerheads when he finally refused to bow to his daughter's every whim.
Mr Bower said: 'In spring 1999, the musical The Pyjama Game was the new school play. Meghan wanted the lead part but also wanted to go for a week to the school's summer retreat.
'Gigi Perreau, the drama teacher, insisted that Meghan had to choose one or the other. Meghan went to the retreat.
'Outraged that the teacher denied her a part in the play, she urged her father not to do the lighting. He ignored her demand.'
According to Thomas, his daughter was 'furious' and 'screamed he should obey her wishes'.
Not long after, Meghan moved in with her mother Doria Ragland.
It has now been seven years since the father and daughter last spoke to one another, with their relationship becoming particularly strained when Thomas posed for paparazzi photos before Meghan's wedding to Prince Harry in 2018.
Thomas also suffered suffered two heart attacks just before the ceremony, preventing him from walking his daughter down the aisle.
Since then, Meghan and Harry have not communicated with Thomas, and he has never had the opportunity to meet his son-in-law - or grandchildren Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.
'I've had a good life and I am proud of what I've accomplished, but everything has been overshadowed by what has happened in the last six years,' he told Mail Online last year.
'I've never been one for birthdays, but I know the one person I most want to hear from, Meghan, won't be in touch.'
Thomas has put further strain on their relationship by repeatedly giving interviews to the press since Meghan married into the Royal Family.

In July 2018, during an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Thomas claimed his daughter would be 'nothing without me. I made her the Duchess she is today'.
He has also appeared on talk shows such as Good Morning Britain, where he has spoken at length about his relationship with Harry and Meghan.
The Duchess's father had been living in Mexico before he upped and moved across the world to the Philippines earlier this year.
Thomas along with his son - Thomas Jr - are now living on the tropical island of Cebu.
Speaking about his move to South East Asia, Thomas told the Daily Mail: 'I am ready for a change.
'I have felt stuck in a rut for some time and I am ready to meet new people and experience kindness.'
He said: 'At 80 it is time to go somewhere where the people are lovely and I can enjoy a quieter, friendlier existence.
'In South East Asia the medical care is good, you can live reasonably cheaply, the people are kind and respect older people and the food is healthy.
'Mostly I just want peace. At 80, none of us know how long we have left.
'I want whatever time I have to be peaceful with none of the awful drama of recent years.'
Since the move, the Markles have not found Cebu to be the tranquil paradise they were expecting, with the men reportedly struggling to adapt to the extremely hot and humid weather on the island.
The Daily Express reported that concerns had been raised about how the climate could affect Thomas's poor health, with claims that the father had been seen walking with a cane recently.
Their new life in a high-rise flat in the Philippines's fifth largest city is world's away from the luxury lifestyle his daughter and family enjoy in Montecito, California.
But with the rift between father and daughter still as wide as ever, it seems unlikely Thomas will be making the 7,000-mile journey to reunite with Meghan any time soon.

Mabel, 29, hits back at nepo baby claims as she admits 'I work hard every day' in candid interview about growing up with her famous parents

She's the daughter of eighties pop star Neneh Cherry and legendary producer Cameron McVey. Mabel, in recent years, has insisted she's made a successful career in music without the help of her famous parents. And in a new interview with Michael Dapaah on Comfortably Speaking, the singer has doubled down on nepo baby claims as she declared 'I work hard every day'. Mabel, 29, said: 'It was like a play on everything really, the expectations I've always had on myself. 'I'm still so hard on myself and I work really hard at it every day, I try to be kinder to myself, but it was definitely initially about the things that I felt about myself and yeah the expectations I had set for myself from a super young age. 'And then also about like coming from a family of musicians, maybe the expectations that people had of me, good for bad, do you know what I mean. 'Like people either set the bar here or they set the bar here, because they're like "oh well you're a nepo baby so like you're s*** basically", do you know what I mean?' The singer, full name Mabel Alabama-Pearl McVey has long been surrounded by musical royalty. Her mother Neneh, 61, rose to fame with her 1989 album Raw Like Sushi and hits Buffalo Stance and Manchild. Mabel's father Cameron, 68, is a legendary producer behind acts like Massive Attack and All Saints. Mabel also opened up about nearly ending her music career entirely as she struggled navigating her twenties. She said: 'It wasn't possible (to keep up with the pace), I mean it nearly like ended the relationship with what I loved the most, music, because it was impossible. 'It is impossible to deliver, in my opinion, an authentic creative product, because that's what it is when you're in the business. 'And also be okay and have enough life to live to be able to create the authentic product if you're having to do it every eight weeks. 'And you're also in your early 20s and you're trying to figure things out because who knows who they are or what they're doing.' Mabel first made waves in 2017 with her breakout hit Finders Keepers, and went on to release her platinum-selling debut album High Expectations in 2019. In 2020, she won the Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist. In 2018, Neneh spoke about nurturing her daughter Mabel in the music industry, revealing she is in awe of her. The songstress spoke of the then 21-year-old's success and reflected on motherhood, in an interview with the Evening Standard Magazine admitting she wasn't always 'emotionally accessible'. She said: 'Mabel is unbelievable and so focused and it's hard out there. 'She gets up sometimes and she's doing two or three sessions a day. I'm in awe of her and so I try to support her with basic mum things, like making her a take-out lunch.' Mabel previously insisted she doesn't want her parents' help when it comes to her own music career. 'When I was in my teens, and was like, 'I really want to do music',' she told the publication. I felt quite embarrassed by being my mum and dad's daughter. I thought, 'People will never take me seriously".'

Post Malone enjoys a legal victory in complicated child custody case with ex-fiancee Jamie Park

Post Malone 's ex-fiancée Hee Sung 'Jamie' Park filed to dismiss their child custody case in Los Angeles this week. The dismissal is considered a win for Post as California allows for higher payments for child support, but their legal battle is still ongoing. The rapper-turned-country star, 30, and Hee Sung welcomed their daughter in 2022. The couple split in November 2024 after their daughter turned two with Post and Park filing custody petitions in the states of Utah and California, respectively. This comes just weeks after his split from his girlfriend Christy Lee following their whirlwind romance on the heels of his baby mama breakup. The custody battle will continue in Utah, where Post filed because that is where he had been splitting 50/50 custody with his ex as a hands-on dad, per TMZ. That's where Park had been living before she moved to California at the beginning of the year. The latest update comes a little over two months since the musician submitted an emotional declaration in court in an effort to convince a Los Angeles judge to throw out his ex's custody lawsuit in California. In Park's original filing, she originally asked for joint legal custody and visitation for the rapper but she wanted primary physical custody. Back in May, the Grammy-nominated artist, whose weight loss has been a topic of discussion among fans, filed for her case to be tossed when he told the court the child's mother only filed in Los Angeles for perceived strategic advantages among the court battle. His attorney Laura Wasser pointed out to the court that the female child already has a number of essential ties to Utah. They include her nanny, pediatrician, as well as classes she's been enrolled in for music, physical education and swimming, the attorney told the court in legal docs. In Park's legal documents, submitted last month to the Los Angeles Superior Court's family law division, she refers to her and Post's daughter simply as DDP. The two-year-old's mother filed for full physical custody, but she only requested joint legal custody and is also open to giving Post visitation rights, aka 'parenting time.' Park, who reportedly split from Post near the end of 2024, alleged in her new legal documents that DDP has lived with her since November, via TMZ. Her court filing, in which she demands that her ex cover her legal costs, also revealed that their daughter was born in May 2022. As for child support, she said: 'The court may make orders for support of the children and issue an earnings assignment without further notice to either party.' Post reportedly recently submitted sealed custody documents of his own in Utah, where he keeps his primary residence, but he has yet to give a response to Park's new filing.
