NHL trade rumor: Toronto Maple Leafs eye shock reunion as Nazem Kadri trade rumor with Calgary Flames gains traction

With the Mitch Marner trade to the Vegas Golden Knights still fresh, the Toronto Maple Leafs remain active in reshaping their identity. One of the most unexpected twists this offseason involves veteran center Nazem Kadri.
As per The Toronto Sun's Terry Koshan, Kadri may be willing to waive his no-move clause for a potential return to Toronto, the team that drafted him.
Why Toronto Maple Leafs want Nazem Kadri back
Nazem Kadri's value is hard to ignore. Since being traded from Toronto in 2019, he has carved out a leadership role in Calgary and even earned a Stanley Cup ring with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022. In 246 games with the Flames, Kadri has produced 198 points, including 35 goals in his most recent season, a career high.
Ironically, general manager Brad Treliving, now with the Leafs, was the same person who brought Kadri to Calgary. That existing relationship could smooth out negotiations, should talks escalate. While no official offer has been reported, the idea of bringing Kadri back feels more realistic than speculative.
Why
Calgary Flames
are not rushing any deal
While Kadri might be open to a move, Calgary holds the cards. There is no indication that general manager Craig Conroy is actively shopping the veteran forward.

Kadri remains one of the Flames' top producers and continues to play a central role in their plans. Unless the return is significant, Calgary is unlikely to part with him easily.
As of now, the deal is only at the rumor stage. But this is the type of offseason speculation that often leads to action.
Mitch Marner departure is reshaping the Maple Leafs' roster moves
Mitch Marner's high-profile exit has created a domino effect in Toronto's front office. With cap space now available and the top of the lineup in flux, the Leafs have room and reason to chase a move like this. Kadri's name resurfacing in Toronto's orbit is symbolic of the club's desire to rediscover the right balance between finesse and force.
Whether this trade goes through remains to be seen. But there is no denying the interest is mutual, and all eyes are now on whether a reunion between Nazem Kadri and the Toronto Maple Leafs becomes more than just a headline.

Watch: Ruben Neves, Cancelo break down; Neto carries special shirt in honour of Diogo Jota, Andre Silva

Pedro Neto, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves were emotional during their respective FIFA Club World Cup matches after the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Al-Hilal players Ruben Neves and João Cancelo were inconsolable and broke down during a minute's silence in honour of their Portuguese teammate Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who died in a car crash on Thursday. The minute's silence was held during the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final match against Fluminense FC. In the day's second quarter-final, Chelsea's Pedro Neto carried a special shirt mentioning the names of Diogo and Andre while walking towards the pitch. The match marked the trio's first appearance since learning about the tragic incident in Spain involving their longtime teammate from Portugal. Neves and Cancelo were visibly emotional during the pre-match tributes, with Cancelo needing to pause and kneel on the grass when images of Jota and Andre appeared on the screen. Jota shared a significant history with both Neves and Cancelo, having played together for over six years in Portugal and celebrating a Nations League triumph. Neves and Jota also played together at Wolves in the Premier League before Jota's transfer to Liverpool in 2020. Al-Hilal's head coach Simone Inzaghi addressed the emotional impact of the situation on his players, stating: "We all know it's a very sad day because of what happened to Diogo and André. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo These things should never happen. We're all aware of the tragedy. We have two Portugal players Rúben Neves and João Cancelo who were friends to them. Today has been a very difficult day for all of us. We tried to work in the same way but the atmosphere was different. It's a very, very sad tragedy." Neves shared his feelings through an emotional Instagram post: "Wherever you are, I know you'll read this. We've never been that stupid and maybe now I regret it a little, but you know what you mean to me as much as I know what I mean to you… Life brought us together and now it can't separate us. We've achieved beautiful things together, we still have a lot to achieve, I know we'll make it. Starting today, you'll enter the field with me, and we'll follow our path together, on the stage where we met. Diogoal, you are my favorite lemonade!!" The match concluded with Al-Hilal losing 2-1 to Fluminense, eliminating them from the Club World Cup competition. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Ravi Shastri, Dinesh Karthik or Kumar Sangakkara? And the winner of the best dressed commentator goes to ...

L-R: Mike Atherton, Ravi Shastri, Nasser Hussain, Kumar Sangakkara (Pic credit: Shastri's X post) As the action on the field raged with gripping intensity during the second Test between India and England at Edgbaston, an equally spirited - albeit far more stylish - contest unfolded off the field among the Sky Sports commentary team. The prize? The coveted (and tongue-in-cheek) title of 'Best Dressed Commentator.' Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! With former players turned pundits in fine voice and finer threads, viewers were invited to judge the sartorial showdown. It sparked a wave of lighthearted banter, good-natured jibes, and classic English wit. Poll Do you enjoy the lighthearted banter among commentators during cricket matches? Absolutely! It's entertaining. Sometimes, it can be distracting. Not really, I prefer serious commentary. It began with Michael Atherton calling out his colleague Nasser Hussain for breaching dress code etiquette. 'In your three-quarter zip top. Breaking the dress code with no jacket and giving us all grief. Unbelievable,' Atherton said, taking aim at Nasser's casual fashion choice. But Nasser, ever the showman, hit back with a hilarious awards-style rundown: 'Right, the votes are in. At the bottom, by some distance, Michael Scruffy Atherton. One shirt, no iron. About as scruffy as they get. Second from bottom, Ian Ward. Third from bottom, mid-table mediocrity - me. Mark Butcher has slipped down. Then we have double-breasted Broad. But Kumar Sangakkara does it better.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Our one of a kind Patented Cold Water Extraction Process Superior Ginseng Undo He crowned Dinesh Karthik runner-up - disqualified from top spot due to 'the stripy shirt' - and declared the undisputed champion: Ravi Shastri . 'The man who looks like he should be making deals with Don Corleone has beaten both you two,' joked Butcher. Sangakkara responded in kind: 'I think - a white jacket carried off in that style. Deserved winner.' Stuart Broad, mock-grumbling, added: 'The concern is that Nasser was the only judge.'
