Myanmar armed groups rebuff junta's ‘cooperation' appeal
The unexpected appeal comes as the junta continues to suffer major battlefield reverses to ethnic minority armed groups and pro-democracy 'People's Defence Forces' (PDF) that rose up to oppose its seizure of power in 2021.
'If the armed groups... choose to legally establish themselves within the framework of the law and cooperate hand in hand with the government... the government will welcome and accept this,' the military said in a statement published by junta media The Global New Light of Myanmar.
The National Unity Government, a body dominated by ousted lawmakers working to reverse the coup, said the junta announcement was 'a strategy filled with deception aimed at legitimising their power-consolidating sham election and attempting to divide and weaken' its opponents.
The military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's elected civilian government in February 2021, triggering mass protests that were met with a brutal crackdown.
Civilians set up PDFs to fight back and ethnic minority armed groups—many of which have fought the military for decades—were reinvigorated, plunging the country into civil war.
Myanmar's junta chief said last month the country plans to hold elections in December and January, pressing ahead with polls denounced as a sham by international monitors.
The junta invited armed groups to stop fighting and start peace talks in September last year after a major surprise offensive led by a trio of ethnic minority armed groups. — AFP

JULY 8 — Concerns have been raised about the short-notice urgent meeting allegedly called by the Acting Chief Justice Datuk Seri Hasnah Hashim. Reference has been made to Section 13(2) of the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009, which states that at least ten days' notice in writing or by electronic mail shall be given to the members of the Judicial Appointment Commission (JAC). It may be said that the 10-day notice is procedural in nature. JAC members, who are no ordinary folks, may consent to a shorter notice having regards to attending circumstances. Or they may raise it (the short notice) with the Acting Chief Justice. When the short-notice urgent meeting was disclosed to the media, I would respectfully say in Malay: 'ada yang lebih sudu dari kuah'. One has to be mindful of Sections 15 and 16 of the JAC Act. Section 15(c) says that no act done or proceeding taken under the Act shall be questioned on the ground of an omission, a defect or an irregularity not affecting the merits of the case. Section 16 empowers the JAC to determine its own procedure. US Secretary of State Rubio heads to Malaysia for Asean meetings, first Asia visit since taking office
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — United States (US) Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Malaysia this week for a series of high-level regional meetings and bilateral engagements, marking his first trip to Asia since assuming office earlier this year. According to a statement on the US Department of State's official website, Rubio will travel to Kuala Lumpur from July 8 to 12 and is scheduled to attend the Asean-United States Post-Ministerial Conference, East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Asean Regional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, taking place from Thursday. He is also expected to hold discussions with senior Malaysian government officials during the visit. 'The trip underscores Washington's renewed focus on strengthening its engagement in the Indo-Pacific. 'Secretary Rubio is focused on reaffirming the United States' commitment to advancing a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific region. 'During this trip, the Secretary will highlight the strength of our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Asean in delivering results for the American people and the people of Southeast Asia, as well as our commitment to building on our Comprehensive Partnership with Malaysia,' the statement read. All foreign ministers of Asean member states will be present, except for Myanmar, which will only be represented by a senior official from its foreign ministry. The Foreign Minister from Timor-Leste will be participating as an observer. The ARF, part of the AMM's wider programme, brings together Asean, its Dialogue Partners and other key players, including the US, China, Russia, the European Union (EU), Japan and Australia. In addition to the formal agenda, the foreign ministers are expected to hold a series of bilateral and multilateral engagements on the sidelines of the meetings. Malaysia is hosting the AMM as part of its fifth Asean Chairmanship, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. The high-level meetings are expected to draw around 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from Asean member states, Timor-Leste, Asean Dialogue Partners, ARF participants, Sectoral Dialogue Partners and officials from the Asean Secretariat. — Bernama

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli will launch a social enterprise platform named 'Ayuh Malaysia' on July 27, which he says was part of his plan even before his recent defeat in the PKR central leadership polls. Rafizi said it was another way of bringing change to society and local communities, outside of politics. He said 'Ayuh Malaysia' would operate differently from profit-oriented businesses and donation-reliant NGOs by empowering local communities to conduct economic activities that are both effective and self-sustaining. 'Social enterprises return their profits to workers and the community, unlike conventional businesses,' he said in a statement. Rafizi said 'Ayuh Malaysia' would also serve as a one-stop platform to set up and connect social enterprises while providing them with the expertise and additional financial resources needed to operate. It will also connect social enterprises with potential beneficiaries. 'I believe the strength of our society lies in building sustainable community structures, especially as political instability continues,' he said. Rafizi stepped down as economy minister last month after losing the PKR deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar in May.
