KUANTAN: The fire at the Jerangau-Jabor landfill in Mukim Sungai Karang here, which broke out yesterday, was brought under control at about 5.30 pm on Monday (July 21).
Gebeng Fire and Rescue Station chief Zahidah Ali said monitoring efforts are still ongoing, with 12 personnel stationed at the scene on Monday night.
"The affected area is now only filled with smoke, and work to cover the burning rubbish with soil will continue to prevent thick ash from escaping the rubbish heap.
"The work will be carried out by the contractor until late tonight and the fire brigade will continue to monitor the location," she said in a statement.
Zahidah informed that the extinguishing operation involving an area of about one hectare began after the team received an emergency call at 3.46pm on Sunday (July 20), arriving at the scene about 10 minutes later.
Earlier, the Department of Environment reported that the fire at the landfill had caused unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Balok Baru, Kuantan and Kemaman in Terengganu. – Bernama

GENERAL PENAMPANG, July 24 (Bernama) -- Seventy personnel from departments and agencies under the Ministry of Communications in Sabah received the 2024 Excellent Service Award (APC), presented by Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil here today. Of the total, 41 recipients were from Radio Television Malaysia (RTM), 24 from the Information Department (Japen), three from the Community Communications Department (J-KOM), and one each from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Japen director-general Julina Johan, and Broadcasting deputy director-general Nasaruddin Abdul Muttalib. One of the recipients, Sabah J-KOM director Milus Alu@Abd Wahad, attributed the achievement to the collective efforts of his team in carrying out their respective duties. 'Thank you to the Communications Ministry and J-KOM for selecting me to receive this award. I also wish to express my appreciation to the J-KOM team for their continuous support in ensuring the success of the department's programmes,' he told Bernama after the event. Milus, who has been with J-KOM for two years after serving 30 years with the Sabah State Education Department, said this was his fourth time receiving the APC, with the first in 2002. Bernama Sabah bureau chief Fadzli Ramli described the award as a collective achievement shared with his colleagues at the agency, especially his supportive team at the state bureau. 'This is the result of teamwork by Bernama staff members who are committed to positioning the agency among the best, not only in Malaysia but also globally. 463 media practitioners receive aid from Tabung Kasih@HAWANA

PENAMPANG: A total of 463 media practitioners and veterans across Malaysia have received assistance from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA fund, aimed at supporting those struggling with health issues or financial difficulties. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed the distribution, emphasizing the government's commitment to easing burdens faced by media personnel. 'We will increase our efforts with media associations and clubs in the states to help more media practitioners who are eligible to receive this assistance,' Fahmi said. He noted that funds allocated from previous HAWANA programmes, including a RM1 million contribution announced by the Prime Minister last year, remain unused. During the event, Fahmi presented aid to Sabah State Information Department photographer Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, who sustained severe injuries in a March road accident. Vicky suffered fractures in six left ribs and his left hand, requiring ongoing physiotherapy. With 18 years of service, he became the 24th Tabung Kasih@HAWANA recipient in Sabah. Fahmi also addressed concerns over low journalist salaries, particularly in Sabah, where some earn below RM2,000 despite long service. 'I will ask Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) to gather details for further discussion,' he said, adding that employment status—whether full-time or freelance—would be reviewed. Earlier this week, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin delivered aid to Sabah News journalist Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, who is recovering from surgery due to intestinal complications. - Bernama
