
P&O axes crucial ferry route to continental Europe
The shipping giant, which is controlled by the Dubai government, plans to scrap a truck ferry route between Teesport and Zeebrugge in Belgium at the end of the year after deciding that it is no longer viable. The route has been in operation for more than 50 years.
P&O said the closure of the route was tied to its strategy of developing a more 'strategic, flexible and differentiated network' for the North Sea. A spokesman said there will be no job cuts as a result of the move.
Teesport, which is located on the south bank of the Tees in Redcar and Cleveland, is owned by PD Ports, one of the UK's largest ports operators.
Frans Calje, chief executive of PD, told staff on Thursday that P&O had exercised a break clause that would bring its 50-year relationship with Teesport to a close. He said that while the cancellation was 'clearly disappointing' for PD, no posts were at risk.
'Even if there were to be a loss of activity in the ferry zone, which I don't expect, we've got ample opportunities in the port to re-skill people and deploy them elsewhere,' he said.
However Ben Houchen, the Teesside mayor, said P&O's decision to scrap the route was concerning.
'This is a deeply worrying time for PD Ports and the many people whose livelihoods depend on its success. The past couple of years have been turbulent, particularly as other ports in the region have been making real progress,' he said.
P&O is one of Britain's largest ship operators but has faced controversy in the past after sacking 800 staff in 2022 and replacing them with low-paid agency workers.
Last year its Dubai owner threatened to boycott a UK investment summit led by Sir Keir Starmer after then-transport secretary Louise Haigh dubbed P&O a 'rogue operator'.
News of the ferry route closure is a blow to the North East and comes less than two weeks after Sabic, a Saudi chemical giant, revealed plans to permanently shut the Olefins 6 'cracker' facility on Teesside.
Sabic's confirmation of the closure of its plant came just days after Labour unveiled its Industrial Strategy. The move puts about 300 local jobs at risk.
Ensus, which runs a bioethanol plant in Redcar, also warned last month that it faced 'imminent' closure after the UK-US trade deal removed a 19pc tariff on US ethanol imports.
Meanwhile, P&O's decision represents a potential significant setback to the planned sale of PD by its owner, Canadian fund manager Brookfield.
Peel Ports dropped out of the bidding for PD Ports while several infrastructure specialists expected to take part failed to put forward proposals by an April 9 deadline, according to reports.
PD employs around 1,400 people, including 1,200 at Teesport, which handles 25m tonnes of cargo a year, including oil, chemicals, shipments for the offshore wind industry and gypsum used to make plasterboard for the building trade.
In April, PD Ports in April unveiled plans to devote 180 acres of land to developing the £200m Teesport Offshore Gateway, aimed at attracting manufacturing, assembly and supply-chain work tied to North Sea wind farms, though sources said investment was unlikely to be forthcoming until ownership of the company is resolved.

"If people know a bus will be there, they use it. If fares are affordable, they ditch the car. "We proved this works. Now it's up to the new Reform leadership to speak up at EMCCA and encourage the mayor to go even further."A spokesperson for EMCCA said a transport plan will be published in the coming months."Alongside our Bus Service Improvement Plan, it will set out how we'll invest in the region's bus network, from routes and timetables to how people pay to travel," the spokesperson said most of the £2bn secured from central government will be spent on infrastructure."We will have revenue funding to support subsidies to fares and routes, but we need to hear from residents before we prioritise that funding. "Their views will help shape our plans and reflect how residents get around and the services their communities need," the spokesperson County Council has been approached for comment.

Funds to upgrade Tyne and Wear Metro signal system confirmed
Funding to upgrade the signalling system on the Tyne and Wear Metro has been confirmed by the Department for Transport (DfT).It said the works would "enhance journey times, improve reliability and safety" on the service as well as enable the expansion of the network to Washington. The service's operator Nexus previously said that signalling failures were responsible for 62% of all infrastructure-related firm's managing director, Cathy Massarella, said the investment was "critical" to the Metro's future. The existing signalling system, which dates from the network's construction in the 1970s and 80s, has become "increasingly difficult to maintain" due to the difficulty in finding parts and those with the engineering skills to carry out repairs, Nexus has previously said. Ms Massarella said: "We are working with analogue technology in a digital era."Without signals we can't run the trains."The announcement follows Nexus submitting a business case to the DfT last year which sought about £400m for a signalling system is unclear how much money the DfT has so far committed to government did however confirm that this money was separate to the £1.85bn slated for transport infrastructure which the government promised to the region earlier this year.A large amount of those funds will pay for the expansion of the Metro to Washington. It is also unclear when these signalling upgrade works will begin. The DfT and the North East Combined Authority have been approached for comment. Derby Quad's future has stabilised, says venue's boss
Derby art centre Quad is in a stronger position financially after its future was in doubt last year, according to its chief executive.A report from trustess in March 2024 said there was "significant doubt" the independent venue, which comprises a cinema and display areas, could survive as its financial reserves had October, its opening hours were reduced to try to save now chief executive Eleanor Thornley says the future is looking brighter and as a result it has been able to start extending opening times again. "Because we have been going well, because of the stabilisation we have seen, we have re-opened on Thursdays and Fridays in the daytime," she said."We are doing a lot better than we were but it is still a challenging time, so we still need the support of our customers and I think we have got a really compelling offer to make this happen." Quad opened in 2008 and its patrons include actors Jack O'Connell, Molly Windsor and Paddy well as the cinema, the venue features a cafe and exhibition space for artists and Thornley took over as chief executive in July 2024 having previously worked as head of the funding body Film Hub months before she arrived, trustees stated in a report they had "concluded that there are matters that indicate the existence of material uncertainties which may cast significant doubt about the company's and/or group's ability to continue as a going concern". But Ms Thornley said reducing the opening times last October had proved a good move added she was also pleased with audience numbers since she took over with strong showings for cult film events and the musical Six."With the support of all customers, who have been incredible, and our stakeholders, it has been a challenging year but a really, really rewarding one," she said."We have got some really loyal customers. People feel comfortable here."
