SINGAPORE - Media OutReach Newswire - 5 June 2025 - The National Youth Council (NYC), KPMG in Singapore and Institute of Public Relations of Singapore (IPRS) today unveiled a youth action programme, Gen2050, to nurture youths' ability in tackling pressing societal challenges. The tripartite collaboration aims to bring together expertise and support of the public, private and non-profit sector in the areas of youth engagement, industry perspectives and mentorship.As part of commemorating SG60, Gen2050 seeks to equip more than 1,000 youths with practical skills to influence, mobilise and drive meaningful change. The programme aims to reach out to youths of all backgrounds, including students with disadvantaged backgrounds, to provide easy access to critical skills and competencies including social entrepreneurship, problem solving, stakeholder management, and knowledge to develop impactful and scalable solutions.Gen2050 offers two tracks - a structured programme with four key modules led by industry experts who will share insights to help participants develop and refine their ideas, and receive funding and mentorship to pilot them. The mentorship process also allows students to be plugged into professional networks where they get to discover potential career paths. Following the programme, selected participants of this track may be considered for national youth leadership programmes.The second track features a curated series of youth engagements that offer youths the opportunity to directly engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and peers to discuss critical societal issues like the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, equitable access to digital skills and mental wellness. These insights from these engagements will support the development of the SG Youth Plan, a five-year action plan that holds the hopes and aspirations of young Singaporeans for themselves and for Singapore, and outlines how youth, supported with opportunities, platforms, and resources, can take action to do good for Singapore with the support from the rest of society.Gen2050 demonstrates how public-private collaboration amplifies youth-driven impact. Nizar Najib said failure to implement the royal order could damage public trust in the government and respect for royal directives. KUALA LUMPUR : The government has been urged by Nizar Najib, son of former prime minister Najib Razak, to accord the same respect and urgency to a royal order on his father's house arrest request as it did to the call that led to the formation of the unity government. 'This issue (of the addendum) has been going on forever. How much longer are we going to drag this out when the decree already exists?' he said at a press conference here today. Nizar, who is Najib's eldest son, said failure to carry out the order could damage public trust and respect for royal directives. 'It's the same as when we honoured the royal decree to form the unity government. No one questioned it and, in fact, everyone supported it. So what's the difference between the decree to form the unity government and the one to implement the addendum?' he said. Last week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government will follow-up on the royal order as soon as possible following legal procedures 'but it depends heavily on the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which we must all respect'. The addendum was made to a Pardons Board decision to reduce Najib's sentence of a jail term and fine, and purportedly orders Najib's jail sentence to be served under house arrest. Najib had been convicted of corruption and abuse of power in the SRC International case. The Federal Court was told on July 9 that Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar had on July 2 acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. At the press conference, Rosmadi Ismail, chairman of the NKB1Msia Club, called on the prime minister to take full responsibility in ensuring the addendum is implemented. He said Najib deserved fair and just treatment under the law as a statesman who had contributed significantly to national development.

PETALING JAYA : Kedah Pakatan Harapan has denied any involvement in organising the 'Himpunan Rakyat Honggaq Kedah' rally on Aug 24, aimed at calling for Sanusi Nor's resignation as menteri besar. Kedah PH deputy chairman Asmirul Anuar Aris said the state chapter will not stop its members from taking part in the gathering, which is being organised by a coalition of NGOs supportive of the unity government. 'PH is not involved in the rally despite receiving an invitation. However, members and supporters of PH parties are free to attend as part of exercising democratic rights,' Asmirul, who also chairs Kedah Amanah, told FMT. 'I've been informed that the rally is being organised by NGOs who intend to present 10 demands to the state government. 'These reportedly include matters related to entrepreneurship, land taxes, agriculture, and sports.' Promotional items for the rally have gone viral on TikTok, with claims that it is being organised by the Sekretariat Suara Anak Kedah, and widely shared by supporters of the unity government. The rally is expected to take place in front of the Kedah menteri besar's office at Wisma Darul Aman. Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah said the organisers have yet to submit any formal notification for the gathering. He said he had only learned about the event through social media and is still waiting for official details from the organisers.

Give New Village residents freehold titles, says Gerakan
New Villages were initially established to curb the communist insurgency in 1948. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gerakan president Dominic Lau has called on the government to grant freehold land titles to residents of New Villages to reflect the Madani administration's inclusive ideals. In welcoming the commitment to develop these New Villages under the 13th Malaysia Plan, he said giving the residents freehold titles for their homes would increase the value of their properties and raise government revenue through higher taxes. Lau, who acknowledged the legal limitations under the National Land Code, said this suggestion should still be seriously considered. 'If Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is truly committed to building an inclusive government, this step should be seriously explored,' he said in a statement. He pointed out that housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming of DAP previously championed the idea of granting permanent titles while in the opposition. 'I still remember when he made this proposal. He said it was the result of thorough research and believed it could restore justice to elderly residents who were forced to relocate to these New Villages during the 1948 (Malayan) Emergency,' he said, adding that it was time to test Nga's sincerity and commitment. Last year, Nga drew brickbats from opposition parties and Umno for proposing that New Villages, which were initially established to curb the communist insurgency, be nominated as a Unesco world heritage site. Umno had argued that it would impact the position, constitutional status and rights of the Malays. Under the 13MP, the government plans to implement a New Village Development Master Plan which would involve upgrading hawker sites and financing schemes for entrepreneurs. In January, Malaysian Chinese New Village secretariat chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said the areas would be developed as tourist attractions ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
