World Cup winner sends President Donald Trump message ahead of 2026 tournament

Brazil World Cup winner Gilberto has called on President Donald Trump and the authorities "to solve all their problems" before the 2026 tournament amid concerns over gun violence in the U.S.
In recent editions of the World Cup, concerns were raised over South Africa in 2010,
Brazil
in 2014, Russia in 2018, and Qatar in 2022. However, the 2026 joint tournament held in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico has raised a different security curveball, with
significant questions raised over gun violence.
Security and safety plans for the 2026 tournament,
which Ireland could qualify for
, have already been submitted in the official bid documents to FIFA before the North American selection. Organizers will put Extensive stadium command centers in place, and security plans for FIFA fan festivals "will be determined based on threat analysis" and will include "elevated security resources in the area of general policing, crowd management, and other appropriate measures."

Brazil World Cup winner Gilberto has called on all key players to ensure fan security at the tournament to iron out any safety concerns before next year's tournament. "I think every World Cup, we raise this question about the concerns. There were concerns at Brazil 2016 about security. In Russia, it was the same," former Arsenal star and
Striver
co-founder Gilberto told the
Irish Star
.
"Then in Qatar we have a great tournament as well. Obviously, I think it's important for every country that hosts this type of competition to solve all their problems because it's important to provide security for the visitors and for their citizens as well, to enjoy the tournament," Gilberto continued. "Football is massive; it's the biggest sport in the world. And as long as we have everything in place in the right place, it's going to be good for the country."

Gilberto, who has opened up his Striver venture for fans to jump on board and

"You can see the last few years how much football has grown in America, and it will grow even more, in my opinion," Gilberto said on the incentive for a smooth and successful 2026 World Cup. However, another challenge highlighted by Gilberto is the logistics of a multi-country tournament for traveling fans.
Games will be played across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico before the tournament ends with the Final at the
New York Jets
and Giants' MetLife Stadium in
New Jersey
. "I think that the challenge I see for some people who love to watch as many games as they want is the logistics," Gilberto stated. "Travel to Canada, America, then Mexico."

"Unfortunately, in the last few years, football has changed a lot, financially speaking," he continued. "As you can see, there is a lot of investment in football for many reasons, because I think people understood that football is very attractive from a business point of view. And with the great arena, the great investment that people have put into the game, they want to have a return.
"And because of that, the logistics became too expensive, sometimes ridiculously expensive. You know, somehow, the majority of people cannot afford to get a ticket. I hope that people start to think about how an average working class can get a reasonable ticket where he can go to a stadium, enjoy his team or enjoy football, take his family or his son or his daughter or his wife or whatever they want to, and to watch a game because the atmosphere in a football stadium is lovely.
"I still love to go to the games. But sometimes when we see what has been the pricing of the prize the last few years, it's been tough for many people who love to watch the game. Let's see. I hope we find a balance between where those people can get what they want. But don't forget the people who love to be in a football stadium."

Ekitike dropped Liverpool transfer hint before £79m move thanks to Gerrard

Before Liverpool even made contact with Eintracht Frankfurt regarding his £79million transfer, Hugo Ekitike had already dropped a hint about his move, courtesy of Steven Gerrard. The French striker sealed his move to the reigning Premier League champions on Wednesday, penning a six-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2031. The 23 year old had an outstanding season with the Bundesliga outfit, netting 22 goals and setting up 12 more in 48 appearances across all competitions. Despite Newcastle United's rejected bid, Ekitike was destined for Merseyside once Arne Slot's team entered the fray for the forward following the Magpies' failed attempt. While their first bid was turned down, a second offer of £69m up front with £10m in add-ons provided an outline agreement between the two clubs that would see the striker become the Reds' fifth major signing of the summer. It was a relatively speedy swoop from Liverpool's hierarchy to clinch a deal for Ekitike who first made contact with the player's camp in January before he enjoyed a conversation with Slot at the end of the season. However, discussions with Frankfurt only commenced after Newcastle's rejected bid 10 days ago. It was earlier this summer that Ekitike sparked rumours of a potential move to Anfield after he was spotted wearing a retro Liverpool kit with Gerrard's name at the back. The France U21 international was photographed training at the Marbella Football Centre, understood to be in June, wearing the Reds' away strip believed to be from the 1998/99 season. The kit featured the ex-Liverpool skipper's first squad number of 28 in what was his inaugural season of professional football. Gerrard spent two seasons with number 28 before switching to 17 in the 2000/01 season. He then landed on his iconic number 8 in 2004 which he stayed with until his departure from the club in 2015. Ekitike wore the No. 11 at Frankfurt but his favoured number is currently occupied by Mohamed Salah. He's since been given a temporary squad number of 54, similar to the rest of his new team-mates as the Reds are likely awaiting on several outgoings before handing their summer signings permanent numbers. After spending 17 months in Frankfurt, Liverpool fans will be glad to know that he was thought of glowingly by his former team-mate Mario Gotze who himself was close to an Anfield move in 2016 to reunite with Jurgen Klopp. Speaking to beIN Sports last year, the World Cup winner said: "I think Hugo Ekitike has an ability that few players have with his dribbling, his finishing, and his speed. Of course, he can help us [Frankfurt] a lot. "We saw it last year: we simply need everyone to be at 100 per cent. This applies to everyone who has played, to the new ones, to those who have been here a little longer. And he is undoubtedly an added value for the team."

England women bank on experience for home World Cup bid

England coach John Mitchell has named a vastly experienced squad for the Women's Rugby World Cup on home soil starting next month as the hot favourites aim to underline their dominance of the sport with the prize that so agonisingly eluded them in 2022. The squad of 32 boasts a combined 1,374 international caps, with 24 players who have previously competed at a World Cup. Zoe Aldcroft will captain her country in her third World Cup, supported by 2014 winner Marlie Packer and Olympian Megan Jones as vice captains. Emily Scarratt, with 118 caps to her name, is set to compete in her fifth tournament having overcome a career-threatening neck injury, with Alex Matthews and Packer in line for their fourth. Abi Burton, May Campbell, Mackenzie Carson, Kelsey Clifford, Maddie Feaunati, Lilli Ives Campion, Jade Shekells and Emma Sing are all World Cup debutants. Natasha Hunt was included, three years after her shock omission from the 2022 squad and having fought back to make herself first-choice scrum-half again. "It is a rare and awesome opportunity for this group to represent the Red Roses at a home World Cup," Mitchell said. "It has been a thorough two-year process to select the right blend of positional cover, skill, mindset and connection. "Every experience and challenge has brought the 32 to this point in their life and career, and they have all earned their place. They should be proud of the opportunity to create history together." Captain Aldcroft added: "To lead the team into a home Rugby World Cup is an incredible feeling. "This group have a fantastic opportunity to inspire young boys and girls all over the country - it's something we have spoken about as a collective and we're relishing the chance to do so." England are odds-on favourites for the competition on the back of an extraordinary run of 50 wins in 51 games with one defeat. Unfortunately for them that "one" was the incredible 2022 World Cup final (above) when New Zealand snatched a last-minute England lineout - having not contested one all match - as England sought a match-winning try having eschewed a kick at goal that would have tied the scores. That was the sixth time they have lost in the final - five to New Zealand - with their two wins coming in 1994 and 2014. Their last defeat in any match before the 2022 final was also to New Zealand in 2019. After a warm-up match against Spain in Leicester on 2 August, England get the tournament under way against the United States under the lights in Sunderland on Friday, 22 August. The 27 September final at Twickenham has long been an 82,000 sell-out.
