Outrage in Italy as heroic police dog Bruno killed in ‘vile, cowardly' attack

The horrific killing of a police bloodhound, who helped find nine people throughout his sniffer dog career, has outraged Italians and sparked a criminal investigation to find his killers.
Bruno, a 7-year-old bloodhound, was found dead on Friday morning in his shed in southern Taranto. His trainer, Arcangelo Caressa, said that he had been fed bits of dog food laced with nails. In a
social media post on Tuesday, Caressa urged police to 'find the killers before I do.'
Premier
Giorgia Meloni , who was photographed with Bruno after one of his heroic rescues, said that his slaughter was 'vile, cowardly, unacceptable.' Lawmaker Michael Vittoria Brambilla, a long-time animal rights activist, filed a criminal complaint with prosecutors under a new law that she helped push through stiffening penalties for anyone who kills or mistreats an

The editor of the Il Giornale daily, Vittorio Feltri, voiced outrage, saying Bruno had done more civic good in
Italy than most citizens.
Caressa said that he had told prosecutors that he suspected he was the ultimate target of Bruno's killers, and that Bruno was killed 'to get to me'. He cited his efforts at rescuing dogs that were being used for illegal dogfights, saying that he had already received threats for his work. He said he had given police investigators the names of two people whom he suspected.
The new animal protection law, known as the Brambilla law, went into effect on July 1 and calls for up to four years in prison and a €60,000 (US$70,000) fine, with the stiffest penalties applied if the mistreatment is committed in front of children or is filmed and disseminated online.

Feltri said that the penalty should be even greater than four years, saying animals must be respected 'especially when they behave heroically' as Bruno.

How to ‘sludge' HK migrants into leaving the UK and Canada

'Nudging' is the gentle way of pushing you towards making good choices; think of your nice parents. 'Sludging' is the opposite, designed to encourage you to make bad or at least suboptimal decisions; picture the car/insurance/mobile phone/real estate salesmen. They are terms in pop psychology borrowed from behavioural and cognitive sciences. Some governments such as that under former British prime minister David Cameron even set up a department of nudges, though it had a more respectable title. Whether it ended up nudging or sludging citizens remains a matter of dispute. One amusing example of nudging is about a European international airport – I forget which one – that needed to cut budgets and slash the number of toilet cleaners. So they started putting tiny toy-like goalposts at the centre of urinals so male users naturally aimed better rather than splashing all over. Here's another example, from an American comedy. The girls in a high school take to kissing – pressing lipsticks on – the big mirror in a school toilet. That creates a lot more work for the janitor. Instead of posting a public warning, the cleaner openly mops the mirror with water taken from toilet bowls for everyone to see. That stops the kissing practice in no time. There are, however, supposedly more sophisticated principles guiding a nudging policy when being launched, say getting workers to join a pension fund. It should be transparent and never misleading. Other choices, even those considered suboptimal, should still be available. You can easily opt out of any option you choose, at least within a reasonable time frame. And it should encourage behaviour that benefits you. Now imagine they are all turned into their opposites, and you have sludging in all its glory.

China cross-dresser secretly films sex with hundreds of men, sparks public health concerns

Social media in China has been appalled by a cross-dressing, middle-aged man who claims to have had sex with more than 1,000 men, secretly filming them and sharing the videos online. Advertisement Police in the city of Nanjing in eastern China's Jiangsu province said they had arrested a 38-year-old man, surnamed Jiao, for disseminating obscene material on July 5. The mainland media reported that Jiao, who has been nicknamed 'Nanjing Uncle Red', installed a hidden camera in his flat and filmed himself having sex with his male visitors. Jiao then shared the video footage in an online group and profited from a membership fee of 150 yuan (US$21) per person to join the group. Jiao wore heavy make-up, long hair wigs and women's clothing to lure his victims. Photo: Weibo Some of Jiao's victims reportedly saw themselves in the leaked videos and reported him to the police.
