‘Best fans in the world' – Dawson Devoy vows to use ‘Dalymount Park effect' in Bohemians' crunch clash versus Derry City

The Irish Sun29-05-2025
DAWSON DEVOY believes that Dalymount Park is now Bohemians' not-so-secret weapon.
Alan Reynolds' men welcome Derry City to Dublin 7 on Friday night looking for a victory that would send the Gypsies into the top three in the table, at least, at the season's halfway point.

Victory would also make it seven wins in nine games — after losing six of their opening nine — and their fifth win in six home matches as Dalymount has become something of a fortress.
That had not always been the case.
The stat led Reynolds to acknowledge that some of his players found it difficult to perform at home where expectations are high.

Patience wore thin during that time.
But Devoy believes that the flip side is there is no more daunting venue for opponents when Bohs are flying high.
The 23-year-old said: 'We're in Dalymount, we're going to take the game to Derry and use Dalymount . . . the fans get behind us from the start.
'It's not an easy place for away teams to come so we're going to use that.

'When we were struggling at the start of the year, the fans are probably understandably frustrated and that's normal. Every club is probably like that. But when things are going well, they're the best fans in the country. It's important we use that to our advantage.'
When Bohs were labouring earlier this year, Devoy could understand the supporters' exasperation.

The Ashbourne native said: 'Where I am from, there are a few Bohs fans. When I do be walking my dog, there are a few fans. That's just part of it.
'The fans have every right to be annoyed when we're not getting results, that's what it is about.
'I think we were all hurting, we've got a few good results and we've got to keep pushing on.
'When we do get beaten, it probably affects the players, it affects your weekend and stuff like that. It's obviously a lot better when you win.
'When results are going your way, it's great, the atmosphere . . . things like that.
'But we're also not stupid, we're only a few results away from struggling again. We've got to continue the good form.'
LATE LATE SHOWS
The past series of games has seen some big moments — boss Reynolds reckons their only losses to Waterford and Drogheda were undeserved.
And Devoy points to Easter Monday against Shamrock Rovers when, having trailed 2-0 at the break, the Gypsies rose from the dead as the midfielder scored the opener and
That was followed by a comeback win over St Pat's, with two late, late goals wrapping up all three points.
Devoy said: 'Something started to click, sometimes all it takes is one or two games. The game in Tallaght was massive for us, it gave us belief coming from two goals down.
'And that following Friday, beating Pat's when we're 1-0 down. So it gives you massive belief and since then we've been playing with a lot of confidence.
'We know what we're capable of as a group and we want to get the best out of everyone. We just want to keep going and pushing up the table.'
Devoy, who returned to Bohemians from MK Dons last July, is also keen to live up to Reynolds' claim that he is one of the best in the country.
He said: 'I think most players will tell you that they want to be spoken about. I believe I'm good enough to be like that.
'Once I just let my football do the talking on the pitch, I'll let other people speak like that. Of course I want to be good, but once we're winning, that's the most important thing.'

Josh Thomas strikes late to help Drogheda United to smash-and-grab win over close rivals Bohemians

A training camp in Spain was arranged for Kevin Doherty and his players as some form of consolation for the misery of their European summer being replaced by a blank July. This dramatic smash-and-grab success provided by a clinical Luke Thomas counter four minutes from time will allow the Boynesiders to believe that the dream that died might only have been delayed. They are now just a point off second placed Bohemians, a team they have taken full points from in all three meetings this term. All by the same 1-0 scoreline, in a manner that has frustrated the life out of Alan Reynolds side. Owning 73 per cent of the ball mattered little in the end. Instead of looking upwards at Shamrock Rovers, the Gypsies now have reason to look over their shoulders. There is no love lost between these groups, with the prevailing memory of the last meeting being Doherty and Reynolds exchanging in pointed verbals in the backdrop of a broadcast interview. They engaged in handshakes before the game, with the sauce coming from the other side of the pitch where home fans unfurled a banner with the words 'Never a Commodity to a Multiclub Monopoly', a dig at Drogheda's place in a network controlled by US firm Trivela – that status that ultimately denied the Louth club the chance to be doing something different this week. The contrast in philosophies goes beyond the boardrooms, with a clash in styles on the pitch. Bohs are always likely to dominate possession when these sides meet, whereas Drogheda are adept at playing the percentages, with every throw-in a threat given their prowess in any situation that demands physical confrontation. Their excellent record against Bohs might explain some of the enmity between the camps. Certainly, the action on the pitch reverted to stereotypes, with Bohs on top territorially against a resolute opponent who waited for dead balls to really commit bodies but were dangerous when they did so. Bohs did create the best chance of the first half, with a sumptuous reverse pass from Dawson Devoy finding Ross Tierney who was denied by Luke Dennison, but the Drogs had their moments too with centre halves Conor Keeley and Andrew Quinn both threatening in the aftermath of balls into the box. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more The pattern continued after the restart, with Bohs shifting from side to side in search of joy with Niall Morahan's deep role allowing the creative Devoy to get forward and support front four Tierney, Connor Parsons, Dayle Rooney and central striker Colm Whelan. But shots were blocked and lofted deliveries were snuffed out as Drogheda relished the adversity and the collisions and continued to generate anxiety on their advances forward, especially when Doherty swapped his strikers and sent Warren Davis and Thomas in off the bench to provide subtle alternatives to Dare Kareem and Thomas Oluwa. It proved to be a significant switch. As Dalymount anger grew, with Drogheda cynically taking every timeout opportunity possible, Bohs lost a bit of their discipline. Reynolds rotated options, but that approach came with a risk on the counter that was cruelly emphasised when the imperious Keeley anticipated a ball to Tierney and showed strength and then composure to release Thomas for his golden moment. Bohemians: Chorazka, Byrne (Buckley 71), Cornwall (Strods 90), Flores; Rooney, Morahan, Devoy, Parsons (Brennan 78); Tierney, Clarke; Whelan (McDonnell 78). Drogheda United: Dennison, Lambe, Bolger (Cooper 88), Keeley, Quinn, Kane; Heeney (Farrell 77), Brennan (O'Sullivan 88); Markey; Kareem (Thomas 62), Oluwa (Davis 62).

Josh Thomas strikes late as Drogheda win at Dalymount Park

A dramatic goal from substitute Josh Thomas, four minutes from time, gave Drogheda United a third consecutive 1-0 league win over Alan Reynolds' side as the visitors took the spoils after a month without a league game. Just when it looked like the game was heading for a draw, Drogheda won it as a sumptuous through ball by Conor Keeley straight down the middle picked out Thomas in the 86th minute who then outstripped the home defence and coolly put the ball past Kacper Chorazka. Drogheda had only played a single match in the last month before the visit to Dalymount, disposing of Crumlin United in the FAI Cup, having lost out in a place in the UEFA Conference league due to a club ownership conflict. Drogheda had been kicking their heels as a result and had a mid-season training camp in Spain to keep their players ticking over. However, they came back to action with a late smash and grab to severely dent Bohemians' title ambitions, as they remain seven points behind leaders Shamrock Rovers and now having played a game more than the Hoops who can go 10 points clear if they beat Derry City on Sunday evening. Crunching tackles and fouls littered the opening period as second faced fourth with Bohs four points ahead of the visitors prior to kick-off, but there were chances. Straight from the kick-off Drogheda lost possession and Dayle Rooney, inside his own half, spotted United keeper Luke Dennison off his line and his audacious effort didn't miss by much. Moments later Bohs right-back Ross Tierney was caught in possession by Dare Kareem, but Kacper Chorazka saved Kareem's effort on the edge of his six-yard box. Kareem was brought into the club in the off-season as an Under-20s player but injures, and the departure of Douglas James-Taylor to Bohemians, has seen the 19-year-old elevated to the senior squad. On the quarter hour, a ball from Bohs captain Dawson Devoy outfoxed the visitors defence and picked out Tierney all alone in the area. He looked certain to score only for Dennison to pull off a brilliant point-blank save with his leg to keep the game scoreless. A poor headed clearance from Conor Kane then fell for Drogheda centre-half Conor Keeley who turned and shot from the edge of the area, with his dipping effort just clearing the Bohs crossbar. The helter-skelter nature of the game continued after the break as both sides looked for the breakthrough goal, but a combination of poor finishing and last-ditch tackles kept the game scoreless. Jordan Flores' shot from the edge of the area came though a ruck of players and Dennison did well to get down late to save just after the hour mark. On 73 minutes, Connor Parsons delivered a cross to pick out Tierney at the back post who smashed his shot into the side netting, with many of the home support thinking it had hit the back of the net, which garnered much derision from the away supporters. Just when the game appeared to be heading for a scoreless draw, Thomas was the coolest player on the pitch, taking his time when one on one with the keeper to slot home the cheekiest of winners for Drogheda with 86 minutes on the clock. Bohemian FC: Kacper Chorazka; Niall Morahan, Cian Byrne (Keith Buckley 71), Rob Cornwall (Markuss Strods 90), Jordan Flores; Connor Parsons (Rhys Brennan 81), Dawson Devoy, Ross Tierney, Dayle Rooney; Colm Whelan (Adam McDonnell 81), James Clarke. Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; Andrew Quinn, Conor Keely, James Bolger (John O'Sullivan 87); Owen Lambe, Luke Heaney (Shane Farrell 77), Ryan Brennan (George Cooper 87), Daragh Markey, Conor Kane; Dare Kareem (Joshua Thomas 63), Thomas Oluwa (Warren Davis 63).

Super sub Josh Thomas secured Drogheda United important win away at Bohemians

Bohemians 0 Drogheda United 1 Josh Thomas was sprung for the bench to score a late winner as Drogheda United maintained their hoodoo over Bohemians with this smash-and-grab victory, their third in a row at Dalymount Park. With Drogheda defending tenaciously as Bohs all but owned the ball throughout the second half, the Boynesiders struck on the counterattack on 86 minutes. Conor Keeley, imperious in the heart of Drogheda's defence throughout, broke forward to thread a pass straight down the middle for the run of Thomas. The striker, making his first appearance in the league since scoring in the 3-0 win over Sligo Rovers back in February, used his power and pace to hold off the challenge of both Rob Cornwall and Niall Morahan to skip between them and dink his shot past Kacper Chorazka. It's now just one win over Drogheda from their last seven meetings for Bohemians who controlled much of the play here but lacked a real cutting edge in the final third against Kevin Doherty's resilient side. While Drogheda move level on 41 points with third-placed Derry City, Shamrock Rovers were potentially the other winners here, a victory over Derry at Tallaght Stadium on Sunday evening will put them 10 points clear at the top of the table with 10 games to play. Missing their chief summer signing, ex-Drogheda striker Douglas James-Taylor due to illness, sloppiness almost saw Bohs punished inside four minutes when Cian Byrne was dispossessed by an alert Dare Kareem. The big Drogheda striker surged forward, his drive just lacking sufficient venom to seriously trouble Chorazka who saved comfortably. In a helter-skelter opening, Bohs threatened for the first time on 15 minutes. A delightful piece of magic from Dawson Devoy saw the skipper thread a sublime pass through for Ross Tierney. Racing off his line, Luke Dennison made himself big to deflect the volley out for a corner. A Conor Kane long throw soon caused Bohs issues at the other end, the ball nodded back by James Bolger for Keeley to dip a volley on the turn just over the Gypsies' crossbar. Bohs had further worries minutes later. Kane's free kick into their area wasn't fully cleared with Andy Quinn's scuffed shot saved by Chorazka. Bohs dominated the ball from the resumption, Keeley rescuing Drogheda eight minutes in with a vital touch to deflect James Clarke's effort out for a corner following a neat one-two with Collie Whelan. The home faithful were then on their feet thinking Bohs had taken the lead on 72 minutes. Tierney's powerful volley from Connor Parson's cross had merely found the side-netting. But it was Drogheda's raucous following who would almost lift the roof off the Mono stand four minutes from the end of regulation time to salute Thomas's winner. Bohemians: Chorazka; Byrne (Buckley, 71), Cornwall (Stods, 90), Flores; Rooney, Morahan, Devoy, Parsons (Brennan, 80); Tierney, Clarke; Whelan (McDonnell, 80). Drogheda United: Dennison; Lambe, Quinn, Keeley, Bolger (Cooper, 87), Kane; Heeney (Farrell, 77), Brennan (O'Sullivan, 87); Markey; Oluwa (Davis, 63), Kareem (Thomas, 63). Referee: Paul Norton (Dublin). Attendance: 4,372.
