Shura Council receives delegation from the National Defence University of Pakistan
Republic of Pakistan at the Council's building. The visit aims to familiarise the delegation with the Council's roles and competencies as part of their programme to visit various institutions in the Sultanate of Oman.
The Deputy Chairman welcomed the delegation, emphasising the importance of such visits, which aim to explore Oman's parliamentary experience and its role in transferring knowledge and expertise.
He also praised the strong historical relations between the two friendly countries and the significance of enhancing them in various sectors, especially in parliamentary and academic fields.
He gave a short overview of the Shura Council in the Sultanate of Oman and the transformations it has undergone, highlighting the Council's key roles and legislative competencies in accordance with the powers granted by the Oman Council Law.
During their visit to the Shura Council, the delegation toured the Council's building, where they viewed the deliberation hall and received a detailed explanation about the voting process and the management of sessions. The delegation also visited the Oman Council Library, exploring its contents and research services.
The delegation members praised Oman's parliamentary experience, stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation between the National Defence University and relevant institutions in the Sultanate of Oman.
They emphasised the exchange of experiences and knowledge to support the development of bilateral relations between the two countries in importance of consolidating such relations.

Shura Council participates in 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva
Geneva: The Shura Council on Thursday took part in the sessions of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, Switzerland, from 29 to 31 July 2025. Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, headed Oman's delegation at the conference, themed "A world in turmoil: Parliamentary cooperation and multilateralism for peace, justice and prosperity for all'. In a speech at the conference, Al Maawali said that the world is going through a critical phase characterised by escalating armed conflicts and rising numbers of refugees and displaced persons, in addition to crises related to food, energy and climate change. This, he observed, requires strong cooperation between parliaments and concerted efforts to help deal with the challenges and achieve peace and sustainable development. Al Maawali added that the Sultanate of Oman has long served as a cultural bridge between nations and cultures, thanks to the country's deep-rooted legacy of peace-making and its established approach based on dialogue, openness and humanitarian communication. Al Maawali stressed that parliamentary action should form an influential arena for strengthening understanding, despite divergent positions and differing visions. Speaking up for the Palestinian cause, Al Maawali pointed out that the Palestinian people possess legitimate rights that are guaranteed by international laws and UN conventions, the most important of which is their right to establish their own independent state on their land. Al Maawali expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. He called on national and international parliaments to take firm positions to halt these violations, ensure the urgent and safe delivery of humanitarian aid and take measures for the realization of a lasting peace based on the Two-State Solution. The Shura Council presented two working papers. The first, titled "Innovation for the Future", dealt with current challenges like armed conflicts and the climate change, as well as the role of parliamentarians in enhancing security by building confidence and promoting inclusiveness. The second paper dealt with means of achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and highlighted the Sultanate of Oman's efforts in this regard. On the sidelines of the conference, Al Maawali conferred with heads of Arab, regional, and international parliamentarian and legislative councils. The meetings underlined the importance of consolidating bilateral relations between the Sultanate of Oman and the respective countries. They also discussed current issues, with special emphasis on the situation in the Gaza Strip.

Oman to participate in World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will take part in the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament scheduled to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 29 to 31 July 2025. Oman's delegation to the conference is led by Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council. The conference is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in cooperation with the United Nations under the theme 'A world in turmoil: Parliamentary cooperation and multilateralism for peace, justice and prosperity for all'. The event explores ways to consolidate parliamentary partnerships amid the rapid pace of global challenges. Oman's participation in the event affirms its commitment to pluralism and highlights its active role in promoting dialogue and understanding among peoples and its support for international initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable peace and comprehensive development. It undertakes this role from the point of view that global challenges require legislative and diplomatic efforts. It is worth noting that the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament has become the largest global parliamentary gathering of parliament speakers. The event brings together more than 300 parliament speakers from 170 countries, along with high-level participation from international organisations, civil society institutions, academics and media professionals. The conference gains significance from its status as an international parliamentary platform whose first round kicked off in 2000 at the Millennium Summit in New York. The conference aims to integrate the ranks of national parliaments within the context of a joint global governance system and to bridge the international democratic gap by activating legislative institutions' role in devising global decisions.

Zelensky announces date for next round of Russia-Ukraine talks
Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the next round of direct peace talks between Ukraine and Russia will be held in Turkiye on Wednesday, according to a video statement released on Telegram, as reported by RT. Moscow and Kyiv have already conducted two rounds of negotiations in Istanbul earlier this year. During their last meeting, both sides exchanged draft memorandums outlining potential roadmaps toward resolving the conflict and also agreed on fresh prisoner-of-war exchanges, RT stated. "I discussed with Rustem Umerov the preparation of the [POW] exchange and another meeting in Turkiye with the Russian side. Umerov reported that the meeting is planned for Wednesday," Zelensky said in the statement. Rustem Umerov, the secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, who also led Kyiv's delegation at the previous rounds of talks, was cited by Zelensky as the official coordinating the preparations for the upcoming meeting. RT noted that earlier reports from TASS, citing an insider source, had indicated the talks would take place on Thursday. However, Zelensky confirmed Wednesday as the planned date for the dialogue, according to the latest update. The upcoming discussions mark a continuation of the diplomatic engagement between the two countries amid ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict through negotiation, RT added. In line with this, the Russian leadership is preparing a response to Kiev's proposal for a new round of negotiations if the Ukrainian side has approached Russia with such an initiative, Grigory Karasin, head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestia. "If there really was a statement (about Ukraine's readiness for negotiations), I am convinced that it is being seriously considered by the Russian leadership. And, apparently, we will find out the decision in the coming days. If the proposal is accepted, we need to prepare for contacts," he said. On July 17, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, said that during the third round, the parties would discuss the draft memoranda that they exchanged at the previous meeting. They set out the specific conditions for each side to cease fire and establish peace. Grigory Karasin commented with scepticism on the possible positive results of the discussion of the memoranda. "If we talk from a position of optimism, which is typical for us, then yes, it can bring results. But this optimism is peculiar, in my opinion, only to us, and everyone else is playing some kind of game. I mean the participants in the process, first of all, the Kiev authorities," he clarified.
