Authorities reveal how young Disney cruise passenger, 5, fell off ship after hero dad rescued her in open sea, faced rumors

New York Posta day ago
The 5-year-old girl who fell overboard from a Disney Cruise had slipped through the ship's porthole and down into the ocean below, according to officials, dispelling rumors her father was at fault for the scary plummet.
The young girl, sailing on the Disney Dream in international waters, was sitting on a railing on a fourth-floor deck of the ship as her parents played shuffleboard nearby around 11:30 a.m. on June 29.
Suddenly, the youngster fell backwards and through the porthole opening down to the open waters, the Broward County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday, according to CBS Miami.

The girl's 37-year-old father didn't see the fall, but was alerted to it by the child's mother.
He dove into the water and grabbed his daughter, and the two treaded water for approximately 20 minutes before they were picked up by rescue crews.
Officials released the preliminary information to dispel rumors circulating online, claiming the heroic dad was holding her over the railing at the time.
The family's recount of the harrowing scene was corroborated by security cameras aboard the ship and crew members who witnessed the fall.
'This family is so blessed,' the sheriff's office said. 'It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome.'

The ship was sailing between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale when the ship's captain announced Mr. Mop Portside, a signal to the crew onboard alerting them of a possible man overboard on the port, or left side, of the ship.
Deck 4, where the girl and her family were when she fell, is less crowded than the other decks on the ship, and contains shuffleboard courts, one passenger revealed to CBS Miami.
A protective barrier is in place on the deck, although there were 'little divots and spaces that make it so that you can climb,' passenger Monica Shannon told the local outlet.
It was not revealed why the porthole was open, or how the young girl had slipped into it.
Officials credited the rescue crew's fast response for saving the duo.
'Based on media reports I have read, the Disney crew was well prepared. Clearly, their training and readiness paid off because they executed a successful ocean rescue,' the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.
'The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols,' Disney said in a statement.

Both the father and daughter were treated onboard the ship before being taken to a local hospital after returning to port.
The father was eventually hospitalized, but officials didn't reveal what injuries he had sustained in his daring rescue.

I Tested The Viral Salt Frying Method

I make popcorn at least three days a week. It's my go-to morning, afternoon, or before-bed snack, and I've made it every which way: in an air-popper, straight from the bag (hello, Costco-sized family pack!), in a 'whirly pop,' in the microwave, and on the stove. But I've never made it in a pool of now. After seeing a viral TikTok where food content creator Roice Bethel (aka @roicebethel) fries food in salt, I was intrigued. His video racked up over 16 million views, so I knew I had to try it. I love popcorn, I hate frying, and I am always on a quest to make my favorite snacks even better. While it may not be something we see often in North America, a quick Google search taught me that it is a relatively common way of cooking among street vendors and households in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh (among others!). The science of it makes sense: salt gets hot, distributes heat well, and is an oil-free way of cooking. So why not try it with my favorite snack? First things first: I picked up a box of coarse kosher salt and used some beautiful rainbow corn (fancy, I know). While it was suggested I use a wok, I used my Caraway non-stick pan because there's no way I wanted to scrub a pan if something got stuck. I poured in salt, wondering…how much? All of it? A quarter inch? An entire inch? Unsure and not wanting to waste, I settled on a quarter-inch layer, poured a ¼ cup of kernels into the pan, and thought, now what? After watching a few videos, I decided to crank the heat to (medium) high and wait for the magic to happen, stirring occasionally. In true form, I started tidying my toddler's toys, and kernels began flying. I quickly put a lid on top and heard it popping away. Hey, you! Thankfully, I had a clear lid to use so I could keep an eye on the action. I've made stovetop popcorn since I could reach the stove, and I've always been told that I should shake and shimmy the pan in order to prevent burning, so I moved it a few times every minute or so, getting salt and popcorn kernels all over my stove, floor, and into the mouth of my begging dog. Once all the kernels were popped, I strained the popcorn through a large-holed strainer, watching my salt go down the drain before transferring the popcorn to a bowl for snacking. Upon tasting it, I first noticed it was ever so subtly salted, the perfect level of saltiness for my tastebuds, and smelled oddly like movie theatre popcorn. As I crunched and munched away, I couldn't help but feel like the popcorn wasn't quite as fluffy and light as what my air popper produces. All in all, I don't think I'll add this method to my repertoire of popcorn-making tricks. While it tasted delicious, the texture wasn't what I was expecting from my popcorn, and compared to my air popper, it was more wasteful and time-consuming to get my popcorn fix. I'm curious to try other salt-fried items, but keep in mind you can only do this with dry foods, like popcorn kernels, nuts, or dried beans. Would you try salt frying? Woman Rescues 'Terrified' Dog from Meat Trade—Then His Dreams Come True

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A dog who was rescued from the meat market has been given a second chance at life, and now he's putting those unthinkable horrors in the past. While dog owner Christina Craddick may already have three canines in her home in Los Angeles, California, she couldn't resist adding one more to her tally. After hearing about Norman, a "terrified" dog who was saved from the meat trade two years ago, she knew she had to adopt him and give him the life he deserves. Norman spent much of his life chained up at a Korean meat market where he was only given "sticks to eat." The poor dog is incredibly nervous and gets overstimulated easily, but he's certainly on the mend in his forever home. Craddick often shares videos about Norman (and her other rescue dogs) on TikTok (@christinancraddick). A heartwarming video showing Norman fast asleep in her lap and cuddling up to her has delighted the internet, leading to more than 518,800 views and over 90,700 likes on TikTok at the time of writing. At present, it's believed that an estimated 2 million dogs a year are reared on meat farms across South Korea. They are predominantly slaughtered by electrocution, which can take up to five minutes to die. But in recent years, the dog meat industry has seen a decline in numbers, with a survey by Gallup Korea suggesting that 70 percent of South Koreans will refuse to eat dog meat in the future. In 2024, South Korea passed a Special Act to cease the breeding, slaughtering and distribution of dogs for consumption. In the six months that followed, 623 dog farms closed down, equating to 40 percent of the total number across the country. It's also expected that 60 percent, or 938 farms, will be closed by the end of 2025. Thankfully, Norman's life was spared, and he is now living his best dream in the U.S. It breaks Craddick's heart to think about what he once experienced, but she's so glad that she could provide him with a loving forever home. Since sharing the sweet clip of him laying beside her, the viral video has generated over 800 comments on TikTok. One comment reads: "He's perfect! Thank you for saving him and giving him a safe place to feel what every dog Another TikTok user wrote: "This literally made me cry. He deserves the world." Another person added: "The fact that dogs can be so hurt, but still just want to be loved will never cease to break my heart." While one commenter replied: "I wish with all my heart that all of them get saved and loved." Newsweek has contacted @christinancraddick via Instagram. We could not verify the details of the video. Girl on Disney cruise fell through porthole as dad jumped to save her in 20-minute fight for survival: police

A dramatic ocean rescue ensued from the father of a 5-year-old girl who lost her balance while sitting on a railing and fell through a porthole, authorities revealed. The rescue unfolded around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 29 on Deck 4 of the Disney Dream ship while it was in international waters between the Bahamas and Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, the Broward Sheriff's Department confirmed to Fox News Digital. Investigators said the child was sitting on a railing near a porthole when she fell backward into the ocean. After the girl's mother alerted her husband, who didn't see the incident, he jumped into the ocean to save his daughter. BSO detectives said after the 37-year-old father found his daughter, he treaded water until they were rescued by Disney Cruise Line rescue personnel on a tender that was launched from the ship. The department said that the total time from the young girl's accidental fall to the rescue was about 20 minutes. Security footage from the ship corroborated the family's account of the accident, which remains under investigation, the department said. WATCH: PASSENGER REACTS TO RESCUE The ship's crew sprang into action, launching a rescue operation that BSO officials credited to their rigorous man-overboard training. Dewayne Smith, another passenger, wrote on Facebook that "Man Over Board" rang across the loudspeaker as rescue teams sprang into action. "Lots of praying folks on this ship! Both the little girl and dad were both successfully rescued!" he wrote. In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Disney Cruise Line spokesperson confirmed the successful rescue: "The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water. We commend our Crew Members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes." "We are committed to the safety and well-being of our guests, and this incident highlights the effectiveness of our safety protocols," they said. Fox News Digital has reached out to Disney Cruise Line for additional comment. Once rescued, the father and daughter duo were checked by the ship's medical staff. After the ship safely arrived Monday at Port Everglades, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported them to an area hospital. The father was hospitalized, but details of his injuries were not released. The sheriff's department noted that the family lives out of state, and they are not releasing their names nor where they live. "This family is so blessed. It's great to be able to respond to good news rather than what could have been a tragic outcome," the sheriff's department said.
