Limpopo driving school instructors, traffic examiners arrested for fraud
Two driving school instructors, a traffic examiner, and a former traffic officer have been nabbed in connection with the fraudulent issuing of driver's licences.
The four were arrested on Wednesday morning in Limpopo by the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) on allegations of fraud, corruption, and money laundering.
The suspects, aged between 37 and 61, were arrested in the Lephalale area and are expected to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate's Court today.
Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, it is alleged that in 2021, examiners at the Lephalale Testing Station colluded with the driving school owners and defrauded the Department of Road and Transport by issuing learner's and driver's licenses without following proper procedures in exchange for bribes.
'The information was brought to the attention of the Polokwane-based Hawks' Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC),' Mmuroa said.

Mpumalanga man arrested for allegedly selling owls
On 14 July 2025, the Mpumalanga Hawks arrested a 48-year-old man in Nelspruit, for contravention of the Conservation Act. The Organised Crime Investigation Unit accosted him for allegedly selling wildlife without a permit. 'A Nissan Light Delivery Vehicle that was used to transport the wildlife was seized,' said Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Magonseni Nkosi. According to Nkosi, authorities found the suspect trading in one of the local shopping complexes. He was allegedly selling four Barn Owls for R1000 each. Nkosi said the Hawks received a tip off from the Mpumalanga Parks Board officials, who provided his unit with the location of the suspect. The Hawks then conducted a joint operation and found the suspect red-handed with the owls, without a permit. The province's Acting Head of Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Brigadier Danie Hall, commended the swift arrest. 'Wildlife life is part of our heritage and we have a duty to protect it,' he said . 'When we take care of our wildlife, we safeguard our heritage for future generations,' Hall continued. After rescuing the owls, the Hawks handed them over to the Mpumalanga Parks Board. They will rehabilitated and released back into the wild. The suspect will appear before the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court tomorrow, 15 July 2025, to answer on the charges leveled against him. A 48-year-old man was arrested today, July 14, for allegedly selling four barn owls for R1 000 each at a shopping complex in Mbombela. ALSO READ: Poacher killed in Kruger National Park shootout The Hawks were alerted by Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MPTA) officials, and a joint operation was conducted. The suspect was found red-handed with the owls, without a permit. A Nissan light delivery vehicle that was used to transport the wildlife was seized by the Hawks. The birds were handed safely over to the MPTA. Tiffany Nicole Meek, aged 31, wept uncontrollably in the dock on Monday as she appeared in court for the murder of her son, murder of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek. The bail application did not proceed on Monday and the case was postponed to July 18. A month ago, IOL reported that residents of Fleurhof marched to the Florida police station in Gauteng, calling for justice after the tragic death of the 11-year-old boy. Last week, Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the "close relative" was arrested on Friday morning, following extensive investigations by Florida detectives with the assistance of the provincial investigative unit and tracking team. Jayden-Lee was reported missing in May 2025 by his mother and was later found unconscious on the staircase of the apartment he was residing at in Fleurhof. He was declared dead at the hospital. 'A case of murder was opened and police conducted investigations which led to the arrest of the woman. She is expected to appear before Roodepoort Magistrates' Court on (Monday) 14 July 2025 on a charge of murder,' said Nevhuhulwi. According to police, Jayden-Lee was dropped off by his school transport in the afternoon, but he never arrived home. The following day, his lifeless body was discovered undressed on a staircase within the residential complex where he lived. The boy had sustained multiple bruises, and his body was found several hours after he was reported missing. According to reports, his body was still warm and clean. He had no blood on him, but visible abrasions could be seen, indicating a possible assault. When relatives were notified, Jayden-Lee was rushed to the hospital, however, he was declared dead on arrival. In May, IOL reported that, at their own expense, members of a Johannesburg-based women's rights organisation travelled to Cape Town to picket outside Parliament in a desperate bid to force the police to take decisive action in the brutal murder case of Jayden-Lee. The Women Empowerment Platform (WEP), led by founder Natalie Solomons, joined local activists and community leaders in calling for justice after Jayden-Lee's body was found just metres from his home in Fleurhof, Roodepoort. The organisation is urging Parliament and the Portfolio Committee on Police to prioritise the case and ensure that an arrest is made. 'We got involved in the Jayden case because it's a child who was murdered in the very community we serve,' said Solomons. 'I still can't get the picture of how he was found that morning out of my head. It was a very evil sight to see – I don't know how somebody can do that to a little boy. I'm a mother.
