DOHA, Qatar — The Qatar Olympic Committee on Wednesday announced the creation of a bid committee for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympic Games, confirming its intention to host the events that would come 14 years after it staged the World Cup.
It's the latest attempt by the Middle Eastern country to host the Summer Games, after Doha was overlooked by the International Olympic Committee in favor of Brisbane for the 2032 Olympics. On two other occasions, Doha did not progress to the IOC's list of candidates.
The Qatari committee said the country, which was criticized by human rights defenders ahead of the World Cup, 'has firmly established itself as a global hub for major international sporting events ... (and) has successfully hosted numerous world championships across multiple disciplines and invested in world-class infrastructure that reflects the country's long-term commitment to excellence and sustainability in sport.'
The QOC said the bid committee will 'engage national stakeholders and international partners to shape a proposal that is technically strong, socially inclusive and globally relevant.'
'The bid will reflect a unified national vision that builds on Qatar's track record, speaks to the potential of the region and upholds the enduring values of excellence, friendship and respect that define the Olympic and Paralympic movements,' the committee said.
The committee didn't address when in 2036 it would propose to host the Games. The World Cup had to be held in November and December because of the extreme heat in the region. The IOC prefers the traditional July-August slot.
Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, will serve as bid committee chairman.

‘Full-circle moment': Sault's Domenic Nicoletta brings Italian heritage to Olympic stage

Article content When Domenic Nicoletta boards a plane for Milan in February 2026, he won't just be heading to his first Olympic Winter Games as an athletic therapist with Team Canada. He'll be returning to the country his parents once left behind — this time, as part of hockey's most prestigious delegation. Article content 'It's a little bit of a dream,' said Nicoletta, the longtime Ottawa Senators athletic therapist. 'I couldn't have asked for a better location, or an almost full-circle moment.' Article content Article content Though the Olympics will be hosted in northern Italy, Nicoletta's roots are further south in Calabria, where both his parents were born before immigrating to Canada. His father, John, found work at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, where he later met his wife, Marie, who worked as a school administrator. Article content Article content Between his commitments with the Senators, Nicoletta still tries to make it back to the Sault at least once a year, and there's always one stop he never misses to 'compare notes.' Article content 'I try to make it back at least once a year to check on my dad's garden,' he said, laughing. 'To me, it's a peace of mind,' said John. 'I go there and relax.' Article content That sense of connection — to land, to tradition, to family — will travel with Nicoletta to Italy in the winter. The Olympics represent more than a career milestone, he said. They're a rare opportunity to share his heritage with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Luca, 15, and Ella, 12. Article content Article content 'It's a great moment for me,' he said. 'My daughter's maybe the most excited, she's wanted me to take her to Italy here for a few years, so it worked out perfectly.' Article content Nicoletta has worked several world championships for Hockey Canada since 2019, and he's made the most of the chance to bring family along. In 2022, his children joined him in Finland, and two years later, his mother accompanied him at the 2024 World Championship in Prague. Article content 'One of the reasons I can never say no to (Hockey Canada) is because of how the family is treated,' he said. 'I can't wait to see their reactions again, and their interactions with the international fans, the cheering.' Article content Long before Nicoletta was standing on the Team Canada bench, his path began with human kinetics at the University of Ottawa. He grew up playing soccer, but it wasn't until a guest lecture from the Ottawa Rough Riders' athletic therapist that he became interested in sport medicine.

Arsenal completes signing of Spain U21 defender Cristhian Mosquera

LONDON (AP) — Cristhian Mosquera became Arsenal's fifth signing of the off season on Thursday after completing a move from Valencia. The Spain Under 21 defender cost a reported 13 million pounds ($17.5 million) and signed a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months. 'We identified Cristhian as one of the strongest young defenders in European football, and he is an important signing for our future,' Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta said. Arsenal, which has finished runner-up in the Premier League for the last three seasons, has been active in the market this summer. The move for Mosquera comes after deals for midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, forward Noni Madueke and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The London club is also widely expected to sign a striker, with Viktor Gyokeres a reported target. The 21-year-old Mosquera was born in Spain and is also eligible to play for Colombia. He won gold at the Paris Olympics with Spain last year. 'He is a young player with exciting talent and enormous potential, who will fit well into our squad as we continue to prepare for next season,' manager Mikel Arteta said. Chenal, a silver medalist in giant slalom at the 2006 Turin Olympics, was among the France national team coaches from 2013-17. 'Following the publication today of a new press article providing new information, including the identity of witnesses, and following the initial testimonies gathered by its ethics committee, the president of the federation has decided to open disciplinary proceedings with the immediate provisional suspension of Joel Chenal,' the federation said in a statement. Le Monde reported that Chenal is the subject of a complaint for sexual assault. The federation said it will join the legal case. 'This demonstrates its commitment to supporting victims, cooperating fully with the judicial authorities and shedding light on these unacceptable events,' the federation said. Le Monde has said previously that Chenal denies the accusations. Sports Golf Canada Canada Sunshine Girls
