"I'm Transport Minister": How Illegal Bike Taxi Op Was Exposed In Mumbai

Mumbai: Illegal bike taxis are not functional in Mumbai, Transport Minister of Maharashtra Pratap Sarnaik was told by a senior official. However, rather than taking this at face value, he decided to test the claim. How? He booked a ride himself from Mantralaya to Dadar using the Rapido app, using a different name. In the next ten minutes, the bike reached his location to pick him up. He offered Rs 500 as fare to the driver of that bike while telling him that bike taxis were illegal in Mumbai. "I am the Transport Minister. These rules are for your benefit," the minister was heard saying to the visibly surprised rider. "You came here, for that I am giving you Rs 500," he said. However, the rider refused to accept the money. मंत्रालय येथूनचं ट्रॅप ऑपरेशन - अनधिकृत रॅपिडो बाईक टॅक्सी सेवांवर थेट कारवाई... #PratapSarnaik #TransportMinister #MaharashtraTransport #ActionAgainstIllegalBikeTaxi @rapidobikeapp — Pratap Baburao Sarnaik (@PratapSarnaik) July 2, 2025 No action was taken against the rider. "We will not gain anything by filing a case against a poor person like you. But the people behind the illegal operation should be punished. That is our intention," the minister said. The state government is yet to grant official permission to any app-based bike aggregator to operate in Maharashtra. As per the recently announced e-bike policy, only companies that comply with specific norms to operate services in cities with a population of more than 1 lakh are allowed. The government has yet to notify the rules, which makes such services illegal. However, when the minister asked the official to cross-check whether the illegal bike taxi application and services were operational, the official assured that the app and service were not operational. He said, in an "official" answer, that there were no unauthorised bike taxi apps in Mumbai or other cities. Last month, the Maharashtra Transport Commissioner's office lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Rapido and Uber companies at Azad Maidan police station for allegedly operating bike taxis illegally.

Raut accuses NCP MLA of illegal mining in letter to CM

Pune: Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut wrote a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that NCP MLA Sunil Shelke and his family members carried out illegal mining at Maval tehsil's Ambale village and cheated the govt out of crores of rupees by not paying the royalty. Raut also alleged that Shelke, in connivance with some MIDC officials, made the govt acquire a piece of land unsuitable for industrial purposes because the mining activity was being carried out. "The valuation of Shelke's plot was Rs 73 lakh per acre. After acquiring that plot, the proposal of giving an alternative piece of land valued at Rs2.5 crore per acre as compensation is pending with the MIDC." Refuting the allegations, Shelke dared Raut to come out with evidence against him. Anurag Bende

Two cops held for abetment after suicide by builder

Vasai: Two constables from the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Virar commissionerate were arrested by Achole police in Nalasopara early Wednesday morning on charges of abetment of suicide and criminal intimidation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Following their court appearance in Vasai on Wednesday afternoon, they were remanded to police custody for five days. The arrests stemmed from allegations of pressuring a Nalasopara developer to abandon his ongoing project, which they had financially backed. According to the FIR, the victim's daughter stated that her father, Jayprakash Chauhan, had been working on Om Shree Ji Cooperative Housing Society since 2015 in Nalasopara East. After completing six floors, the project stalled due to financial constraints. Chauhan subsequently borrowed from the two constables —about Rs 33 lakh in Jan and April from constables Rajesh Mahajan and Shyam Shinde. During a family meal in the second week of June, Chauhan disclosed that Mahajan and Shinde were pressuring him to abandon the project, having already selected someone else to take over. A week later, he revealed their threats to file false charges that could lead to his imprisonment. Despite promising the constables several flats against their Rs 33 lakh investment, they now demanded the entire project. Frightened, Chauhan turned off his mobile phone and relocated to a different flat. On June 30 around 9:30 at night, the situation escalated when broker Lala Lajpat, the third accused, visited his residence and issued further threats to abandon the project. The Achole cops first filed an accidental death report (ADR) on Tuesday late night and then filed the FIR at 5 in the morning. The cops were then arrested.
