For decades, the oncology field has faced an unfortunate truth: Extracting high-quality, structured information from clinical charts is a tedious, labor-intensive and largely manual task. Even as AI models have advanced, their outputs remain incomplete without human intervention. And what many people don't know is that behind every patient is a cancer registry specialist (CRS) spending hours reading through charts, identifying events, interpreting dates and ensuring accuracy for each case.
But as we approach regulatory-grade accuracy—a level of performance long considered the exclusive domain of highly trained human experts—that's all about to change. In the world of cancer data extraction, this means AI is hitting a consistent threshold of 95% accuracy. That figure isn't arbitrary; it's the benchmark achieved by experienced teams working meticulously, often with multiple levels of quality control.
Thanks to the combined power of healthcare-specific natural language processing (NLP) and large language models (LLMs), and a careful approach to model selection and orchestration, we're crossing that threshold in some of the most critical areas of oncology information, including tumor staging, grading and beyond. Here's why it matters.
Hidden Complexities Of Oncology Data
To appreciate the significance of this leap, it's important to understand the scale and complexity of the problem. A single cancer diagnosis involves hundreds of discrete data points: dates of imaging, biopsies, surgeries, therapies, pathology reviews and more. There are often dozens of potential diagnosis dates, and a specific rule determines which one is considered official for registry purposes. Even determining the primary cancer site or tumor grade can involve navigating contradictory information scattered across different documents.
Currently, filling out a registry case takes a herculean amount of time and effort. Registrars estimated taking approximately one hour and 15 minutes to complete an abstract for a simpler case and about two and a half hours to complete an abstract for a more complex case. This is done once a year for each patient, and with growing backlogs, data is often outdated by the time it's available for clinical decisions or research. The delay isn't just inconvenient. It's a barrier to real-time care optimization and scientific discovery.
Over the years, AI models have grown steadily more accurate. Best-in-class systems could extract relevant information from charts, but not reliably enough to replace human interpretation. They were assistive tools that were helpful, but not trustworthy enough to operate independently in regulatory contexts.
Why General-Purpose LLMs Fall Short
Now, with AI systems achieving 95%-plus accuracy on key fields without manual oversight, AI can replicate, and, in some cases, outperform, the gold standard achieved by expert cancer registrars. But not all models are created equally. These AI-driven tools are built specifically to tackle the unique challenges of healthcare, and oncology in particular. Rather than relying on general-purpose AI like GPT-4, which often struggles with domain-specific details, these models are trained on medical texts and structured to understand the nuances of clinical language.
It's tempting to believe that large, general AI models can solve these problems with simple prompts like, "Extract cancer diagnosis and treatment." But in practice, they fall short. Too often, they miss subtle distinctions, hallucinate relationships between entities or misinterpret clinical negations. While useful as a starting point, they lack the precision, stability and regulatory readiness needed for real-world healthcare applications.
The Power Of Medical Language Models
Healthcare-specific language models aren't just a tech upgrade; they're a foundation for the next generation of cancer care. What was once buried in notes and PDFs is now accessible, providing real, actionable insights. What this looks like in practice is automated case findings, real-time reporting and monitoring integrated into existing clinical workflows.
Achieving higher accuracy in entity recognition, better handling of negation and superior ontology mapping, domain-specific models produce results that are reproducible and explainable, which are key for auditability and trust.
Here are several ways regulatory-grade oncology AI is being applied:
• Tumor Registry Automation: Cancer centers are required to maintain registries of patients, including data on diagnosis, staging and treatment. Oncology models can scan pathology reports, read and decode them automatically, drastically reducing the need for manual chart review.
• Clinical Trial Matching: Finding eligible patients for a trial targeting a very specific cancer can be like finding a needle in a haystack. AI models can sift through thousands of records, pulling out the relevant biomarker and tumor type to flag potential candidates in near real time.
• Quality Monitoring: AI can flag when recommended treatments are missing. For example, if a patient doesn't have a recorded therapy plan, the system can alert the quality improvement team to investigate further.
• Adverse Event Tracking: Side effects can be buried in progress notes. AI can extract and monitor such events over time, alerting clinicians when recurring toxicities could signal a need to adjust therapy.
• Outcomes Research: For research teams comparing outcomes, AI tools can provide the structured data needed to stratify patients and link treatment patterns to survival trends.
Despite the obvious benefits, AI isn't a fix-all for oncology tracking. In rare cancers, evolving treatment protocols or atypical patient presentations, human registrars can be better equipped to contextualize and accurately code information that lacks precedent in training data.
Regulatory compliance, ethical considerations and quality assurance also demand expert oversight, ensuring data integrity and alignment with evolving standards. So, for now, human expertise remains vital to the accuracy and reliability of cancer registries. The role will just evolve with the technology.
With regulatory-grade AI for oncology, structured cancer data will become as current and accessible as the clinical notes they come from. Instead of data entry, registrars can shift their focus to more meaningful work, like quality assurance. In turn, patients will benefit from faster research and more responsive care. We're nearing the point at which AI is no longer just supporting our work—it's starting to do the work itself, and do it at a level healthcare professionals can rely on. It's just going to take time.

The company I'm eyeing is developing its own AI capabilities that serve multiple cases across its business with huge revenue opportunities. The stock trades for a fair value, and even slight outperformance could push it into $2 trillion territory. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Nvidia recently became the first ever $4 trillion company in the world. Its rapid ascension in value stems from growing demand for artificial intelligence. But Nvidia isn't the only company that's seen its market value soar to multitrillion-dollar levels on the back of AI-fueled growth. The three biggest cloud computing providers -- Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet -- all boast market caps above $2 trillion. Meanwhile, Apple remains one of the most valuable companies in the world as it works to catch up on its AI capabilities. But the $2 trillion club may be about to get a little bigger. One company is showing strong financial results stemming from the rapid advancements of artificial intelligence over the last few years. In fact, I predict it will surpass the $2 trillion market cap milestone before the end of the year. Here's the AI giant that could join the $2 trillion club. One of the biggest beneficiaries of generative AI capabilities I predict that the next member of the $2 trillion club will be Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META). Not only does it already have a market cap of roughly $1.8 trillion as of this writing on July 24 -- which puts it about 11% from $2 trillion -- but the stock currently looks undervalued relative to the potential opportunities. AI could boost its revenue in the near term while opening up even bigger opportunities in the long run. During Meta's first-quarter earnings call on April 30, CEO Mark Zuckerberg laid out five major opportunities for the company with AI. Improved advertising: Meta has long used machine learning algorithms to help surface advertisements amid organic content to drive maximum engagement. That's led to steady improvements in ad pricing for the company. It's also rolled out generative AI tools that help marketers come up with creatives (ads). In the pipeline, Meta's developing an AI agent that can take a marketer's objective and budget and create and run the entire campaign for them. That has the potential to save marketers money and increase the total number of companies running ads on Meta's properties, further pushing ad prices higher. More engaging experiences: Zuckerberg details two benefits of AI: better recommendations and new types of content. Meta has expanded its AI model to include more data points across all different types of content to improve recommendations across every surface of its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. As it grows the model bigger and bigger, it's getting better and better at engaging users. That's only possible because it now has the compute power to support its large language model development. Zuckerberg also expects generative AI tools to provide new ways for creators to produce better content for users. Everything from existing content like photos and videos can be manipulated with AI, and generative AI could enable creators to produce more interactive content as well. Business messaging: Meta's WhatsApp for Business is a relatively small source of income right now. But as Meta improves its AI agent capabilities, it reduces the cost for businesses to provide customer service and sales through WhatsApp and Messenger. That could lead to a surge in WhatsApp for Business users. One analyst thinks AI agents alone are a $100 billion opportunity for Meta. A stand-alone AI chatbot: Meta has integrated the Meta AI assistant into all of its main apps and released a stand-alone version of the app as well. As the user base grows, it could provide another source of valuable advertising inventory. Importantly, since Meta is developing its own large language model for the above applications already, the additional cost of building and running a stand-alone AI chatbot is far lower than for dedicated AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic. Devices: Zuckerberg points out the growing popularity of Meta's AI glasses. Unit sales tripled in the first quarter. Longer term, generative AI may be essential for creating an augmented reality user interface that fits into the unique setting of each user. Indeed, AI has the potential to dramatically impact Meta's financials in a positive direction in the near term while supporting its long-term objectives in virtual and augmented reality. The stock looks like a bargain right now The above factors should be able to generate strong double-digit revenue growth for Meta for years to come. The company saw 16% revenue growth last quarter, while exhibiting nice operating leverage. As a result, operating income climbed 27% year over year. The big step up in capital expenditures could weigh on earnings growth for the next couple of years as depreciation expense climbs as a result. But as the company grows into those expenses, it should continue to show operating leverage. Meta's also using excess cash flow to repurchase shares. It bought back $13.4 billion worth of its stock in the first quarter, and it still has $70 billion in cash on the balance sheet. As a result, the company should be able to generate strong earnings-per-share growth. As of this writing, the stock trades for 28 times earnings. Considering the growth potential ahead for the stock, that's an enticing price for investors. To push the stock to $2 trillion, it would have to trade for closer to 31 times earnings, which isn't an unreasonable multiple for the stock. But if Meta ends up outperforming expectations, it could trade for the same multiple and still achieve a $2 trillion valuation. I expect a combination of multiple expansion and outperformance to drive the stock to $2 trillion before the end of the year. Should you buy stock in Meta Platforms right now? When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. AI chatbots are becoming more widely used for searching for things online, and Google, with its Gemini chatbot, AI Mode for Search, and AI-generated summaries at the top of search pages, is no exception. But that doesn't mean the tech giant wants you to find other AI search tools it can't offer. The company has a new feature, called Web Guides, undergoing testing in its Search Labs, to address that danger. Web Guides are a kind of hybrid between the old blue‑link setup and Google's newer AI options, employing a version of Gemini to organize suggested links. Instead of an algorithm-sorted list, the links are clustered under AI‑generated headings alongside short summaries. When you search for something using Web Guides, the AI fires off several variations of your query in parallel, then stitches together the structured, guided results page you see soon after. The Web Guides are supposed to be for open‑ended searches that don't have definitive answers from a single source, but that you might not want a full conversation about. You might use it if you want to figure out how to plan something complex or have a question that requires multiple sentences to explain. If you are asked about how to plan an international trip, you might get answers set under categories like "costs" and "popular destinations." Maps versus stories One way to think about it is to compare a map to a story. Ask Gemini or ChatGPT about the best way to get in shape, and you'll get a full plan for the next several months with structured workouts, nutrition tips, and mistakes to avoid. There will be encouragement and follow-up questions, but it will be a complete document in some ways. Web Guide would draw you a map of links helpfully arranged, but you'll have to travel yourself. You might get a cluster of links on "weight exercises for beginners" or "gym etiquette and recommendations." Those web pages hold answers, but the AI isn't answering the question directly. Which is best depends on how you like to search. Web Guide is for when you want to find answers or maybe (and fairly) don't trust what an AI writes. If you just want a single link to find an answer, traditional search is probably your best bet, but if you have something big or important enough to spend time researching five or more sources, it's a good way to narrow down your hunt for answers. If you're mapping out how to refinance your house, fix a relationship, or start baking sourdough professionally, Web Guides might have real utility. That's not to say it should be your default choice. It can be quite slow relative to a normal search or even ChatGPT and Gemini because it's doing multiple queries at once behind the scenes. And as noted, not every query benefits from this treatment if it's something very specific. Big, messy questions are Web Guide's turf. I wouldn't be surprised if Web Guide becomes Google's main search tool, especially with AI Overviews and AI Mode as options. Structured search is on the rise, and Web Guides are a nice medium between the usual link list and AI chatbots. To try it yourself, you need to go to Google Search Labs, go to the 'Web' tab on any search, and you'll see the new layout when it applies. There's a toggle at the top to switch it off if it gets annoying.
