Claims of Max Verstappen having 'conversations' with Mercedes could overshadow Red Bull's home race

The idea of Max Verstappen joining Mercedes would have seemed outlandish when he fought Lewis Hamilton in the controversial title decider in 2021. Now it's the hot topic in the Formula 1 paddock.

The build-up Friday to the Austrian Grand Prix was dominated by comments made the day before by Mercedes driver George Russell to British broadcaster Sky Sports.

Russell has yet to get a contract extension for 2026 and seemed to suggest that Verstappen and Mercedes were in talks.

'As Mercedes, they want to be back on top, and if you're going to be back on top you need to make sure you've got the best drivers, the best engineers, the best pit crew, and that's what Mercedes are chasing,' Sky Sports quoted Russell as saying. 'So, it's only normal that conversations with the likes of Verstappen are ongoing. But from my side, if I'm performing as I'm doing, what have I got to be concerned about? There are two seats in every Formula 1 team.'

It would be one of the biggest driver changes ever in F1 — on par with Hamilton's switch to Ferrari — if Verstappen, a Red Bull driver since childhood, joined the team which has often been his toughest challenger.
Article content
It would mean working with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who was left to exclaim 'that was so not right' at a decision which helped Verstappen beat then-Mercedes driver Hamilton to the 2021 title on the last lap of the season.

Asked about Russell's comments and whether any talks with Verstappen were happening, Wolff signaled Mercedes would 'need to explore' future developments.

'I like what George says, and I'm always supportive of the driver, and there's no such thing as saying things I wouldn't want him to say. I think we are very transparent in the team for what we do, what we plan, and we've been like that since I was put in charge of that. So that's not the issue,' Wolff said. 'And at the moment, clearly you need to explore what's happening in the future, but it doesn't change anything of what I said before about George, about Kimi, about the lineup that I'm extremely happy of having.'

Mercedes has yet to confirm either Russell or rookie Kimi Antonelli for 2026 despite both having strong seasons so far.

Verstappen has a long-term contract through 2028, so in theory his Red Bull seat should be one of the safest on the grid. However, the deal has performance-related clauses which could reportedly allow a move.

'I don't think we need to talk about that,' Verstappen said Thursday when asked to confirm whether he'll stay with the team for 2026. 'It's not really in my mind. It's just driving and trying to push the performance, you know. And then we focus on next year.'

Lando Norris wins Austrian Grand Prix; Max Verstappen DNF

(Photo credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images) Lando Norris staved off McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday in Spielberg, Austria. Pole sitter Norris battled Piastri in the early going and again toward the end before the former raced to his third win of the season and first since last month's Monaco Grand Prix. 'We had a great battle, that's for sure,' Norris said over the radio in his post-race interview 'A lot of stress, but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar.' Norris picked up 25 points after finishing the race in 1 hour, 23 minutes and 47.693 seconds. Piastri crossed the finish line 2.695 seconds later to pocket 18 points, followed by Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc (19.82 seconds behind Norris) and Lewis Hamilton (29.02) and Mercedes' George Russell (62.396). Russell captured his first F1 victory of the year on June 15, leading from wire-to-wire at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. Piastri holds a 15-point lead over Norris and a 61-point edge on reigning champion Max Verstappen, who resides in third place after he exited Sunday's competition following a collision with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli during Turn 3 in the opening lap. Verstappen did not finish. The incident brought out the safety car and plenty of foul language from Verstappen. The stewards later gave Antonelli a three-place grid penalty for his next race.

F1 champ Max Verstappen says his ‘mentality doesn't change' after a big blow to his title defense

After days of speculation he might leave Red Bull for Mercedes, Max Verstappen got a closer look at a Mercedes car than he wanted. The defending Formula 1 champion's Austrian Grand Prix lasted less than half a lap as he was knocked out of the race by Mercedes driver and potential future teammate Kimi Antonelli. 'I think we try to do our best always. My mentality doesn't change. We have won a lot in the past. Sometimes you have to accept that you are not winning, and we just try to do the best we can,' Verstappen told British broadcaster Sky Sports. Asked about what the incident meant for his title defense, he said: 'Hopefully then maybe people will not mention it too much any more.' It followed an eventful week for the four-time champion, who blamed a lack of grip for being off the pace in qualifying and seventh on the grid. Antonelli's teammate George Russell had suggested Thursday Verstappen may be holding talks with Mercedes on a possible future move. Verstappen remains third in the standings but is 61 points off leader Oscar Piastri. In past years, Verstappen and Red Bull have produced some of their best performances at the team's home race. It attracts thousands of orange-clad Dutch fans and Verstappen has won at the Red Bull Ring five times. It was a rare mistake in an otherwise impressive season for 18-year-old Antonelli. He braked late, locked his rear wheels and dived deep into a tight right-hand corner, spinning Verstappen round and ending both of their chances. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'I'm out, I got hit like crazy,' Verstappen told Red Bull over the radio. Verstappen waved to the crowd as his car was lifted away by a tractor and chatted with Antonelli as they walked away together. It was the first time Verstappen failed to score any points in a race in more than a year, since the Australian Grand Prix in March 2024. It ended a week of struggles at a track where he's won five times in F1, and capped a disastrous home Grand Prix for Red Bull. Rounding out a nightmare home race for Red Bull, Yuki Tsunoda hit Alpine's Franco Colapinto while fighting for 13th place and had to pit for a replacement front wing. The Japanese driver finished last and hasn't scored a point in four races. ___ AP auto racing:
