Only Platform Providers Can Block Social Media Content And Accounts
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- The act of blocking or removing social media content or accounts can only be carried out by the platform providers themselves, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the government has no authority to instruct social media platform providers to take such actions, which are only carried out if the content or account is found to have violated the law.
'When a piece of content or an account is taken down or blocked, it means the platform acknowledges and complies with existing laws and believes that the content has breached those laws,' he said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda (NANBA) programme here today.
Also present were Community Communications Department (J-KOM) director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop and Batu MP P. Prabakaran, who is also chairman of the Special Task Force Committee for the Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA).
Earlier, in his speech, Fahmi said 173,642 pieces of content had been taken down by social media platform providers from Jan 1 until yesterday.
Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, said 51 per cent, or more than 90,000, of the total involved online gambling, while over 43,000 were scam-related, with the remainder linked to other criminal activities.
He said Facebook was identified as the platform with the highest number of online gambling and scam advertisements, followed by TikTok, while Telegram was found to be the weakest in managing scam-related issues.
'Of the content requested for removal on Telegram, half were scams, but the platform did not take down all of them. So we need to be firm with these platforms.
'Telegram representatives will be in Kuala Lumpur this week to continue discussions with MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission), covering, among others, scams, online gambling, child sexual abuse material, prostitution content, and copyrighted films or TV episodes previously accessible via various Telegram channels,' he said.

Fadillah concludes central Asian visits, nuclear energy revival on the horizon
Fadillah's visit focused on the potential revival of Malaysia's nuclear energy programme, alongside collaboration in the halal economy, tourism, energy investments and Islamic finance. – Bernama photo MOSCOW (June 28): Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has concluded his eight-day working visit to Uzbekistan and Russia, marking a pivotal step in Malaysia's renewed efforts to strengthen strategic international partnerships. The visit focused on the potential revival of Malaysia's nuclear energy programme, alongside collaboration in the halal economy, tourism, energy investments and Islamic finance. A key milestone was the signing of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) between MyPower Corporation, a special-purpose agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), and the Russian state atomic energy agency Rosatom. The agreement paves the way for potential cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, as Malaysia re-evaluates its long-term energy strategy. As Malaysia advances its National Energy Transition Roadmap, nuclear energy is being seriously considered as a reliable, clean baseload option to diversify the energy mix and achieve long-term climate and energy security goals. Malaysia previously had a robust nuclear development agenda, including plans to commission two nuclear power plants by 2021. However, these plans were shelved, and the Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation was disbanded in 2018. Today, amid increasing pressure to decarbonise and diversify its energy sources, nuclear energy is once again under consideration as a viable low-carbon option. A recently completed pre-feasibility study yielded encouraging findings, prompting the government to explore implementation pathways that align fully with global safety, security and non-proliferation standards. The visit also reinforced Malaysia's global halal leadership. Both Uzbekistan and Russia expressed strong interest in leveraging Malaysia's well-established halal ecosystem. Additionally, the Uzbek government extended a formal invitation to Malaysia's national oil and gas company, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), to consider reinvesting in the republic's energy sector. Petronas had exited Uzbekistan in 2013, but new opportunities in exploration and upstream development have emerged as Uzbekistan seeks to revitalise its energy landscape. Tourism ties were boosted by AirAsia X's launch of direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Tashkent, operating three times weekly. Recognising the potential to further enhance travel and trade, Fadillah encouraged AirAsia X to expand its route to include Samarkand, a historic Silk Road city and Unesco World Heritage Site, offering added value for both leisure and cultural tourism. Uzbekistan is also keen to collaborate with Malaysia on carbon trading, and has expressed interest in tapping Malaysia's extensive experience in developing the sukuk market — an area in which Malaysia is widely recognised as a global leader in Islamic finance. – Bernama airasia x fadillah yusof malaysia nuclear Russia Uzbekistan

Nga: Don't fall prey to loan sharks, use licensed moneylenders
PUTRAJAYA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has urged the public, particularly those facing financial difficulties, not to fall prey to illegal money-lending schemes. Minister Nga Kor Ming instead advised the public to obtain loans only through licensed moneylenders registered under the Moneylenders Act 1951. He said that under the Act, the annual interest rate must not exceed 18 per cent for unsecured loans and 12 per cent for secured loans. "Moneylenders are not allowed to impose total interest charges that exceed the principal amount," he said in a statement here today. The statement was issued following a fire involving three terrace houses in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama, which is believed to be linked to the activities of illegal moneylenders. Nga said Section 29(B) of Act 400 prohibits licensed moneylenders or their representatives from going to borrowers' homes or workplaces to collect repayments or to intimidate them. "In the event of a violation of this provision, the public is urged to immediately lodge a report with the ministry or the police so that appropriate action can be taken against those involved," he said. Nga also advised the public to check the status of moneylenders via the i-Kredikom application or by contacting the ministry to ensure they were licensed and registered. He said the ministry took a serious view of illegal moneylending activities by Ah Long or loan sharks, which preyed on low-income and desperate groups, affecting the safety and well-being of the people. "Ah Long or illegal moneylenders often take advantage of individuals who are desperate due to financial hardship by trapping them in a vicious cycle of debt through exorbitant interest rates, harassment and violence," he said. Nga also urged the police to take firm and comprehensive action to eradicate the activity from its roots. Police are conducting further investigations into a fire that destroyed three double-storey terrace houses in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama on Tuesday, which is suspected to have been caused by loan sharks. –Bernama

Government reviews 13MP after thorough discussions, says Fahmi
KUALA LUMPUR: The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) was not made hastily but followed detailed discussions over the past two weeks, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He explained that the process began with a draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. In my press conference a few weeks ago, I mentioned that the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the Economy Ministry secretary-general,' Fahmi said during a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda (NANBA) programme. He emphasised that all policies and decisions must first undergo Cabinet scrutiny. Last Friday, ministries were instructed to study the draft and submit feedback. A special Cabinet meeting was then held to consolidate these inputs, leading to further refinements. Fahmi, who also serves as the MADANI government spokesman, noted that the review process revealed several areas requiring adjustments, prompting the Cabinet to assign Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah to oversee the Economy Ministry's functions. The decision comes after former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli questioned the review, calling it a rushed response to social media criticism. However, Fahmi reiterated that the move was procedural and aimed at ensuring the 13MP aligns with national priorities. The 13MP is set to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.
