Retired teacher moves onto cruise ship for 15-year journey, claims it's cheaper than living in California
A California retiree is sailing into the next stage of her life as she traded in her home in a retirement community for the open seas.
Sharon Lane, a former high school foreign language teacher, purchased an interior villa aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey, the world's first perpetual cruise, since she claimed it was cheaper to live at sea than remain in the Golden State.
'Not only was it affordable to me, it would actually cost me less money to live here like this, have everyone taking care of me instead of me taking care of everybody,' Lane told NBC Los Angeles.
The 77-year-old has made it her life goal to live on a cruise ship and she snagged her spot on the ship, moving onboard on June 16.

'All the chores you do in life? Done!' said Lane. 'If you put your to-do list on a piece of paper and you cross off anything that wasn't a fun activity, then you end up with the life we have now.'
Villa Vie is marketed as the 'only affordable residential cruising option offering this lifestyle.'
The ship's design allows the vessel to travel across oceans and navigate inland waterways and rivers, according to the Villa Vie website.

Odyssey is scheduled to sail on a three-and-a-half-year cycle, visiting 425 destinations in 147 countries.
The ship launched in October 2024, but Lane didn't board until June.
She has sailed to Vancouver, up to Alaska, with plans to embark on a transpacific voyage to Japan and Taiwan in the coming weeks, according to Lane.
An inside villa, similar to Lane's, costs a one-time fee of $129,999 or approximately $2,999 a month for a solo traveler.
Amenities aboard the ship include entertainment lounges, clubs, a library, a fitness center and a spa.
Residents have access to Wi-Fi, bars, a pickleball court and a pool.
Lane spent her life savings on the long-term excursion and plans to remain onboard for the ship's entire 15-year journey.
'I'm finally able to do what I've wanted to do for years,' she told CNN Travel. 'I buy the cabin, I live in the cabin, and that's it. And then there's no end.'

The ship had planned to set sail in May 2024, but problems with the rudders and gearbox forced a delay on the initial embarkation.
Passengers who had already purchased rooms onboard were forced to live on the docked ship in Belfast, Northern Ireland until October.
The delays meant some passengers have spent months living on the docked cruise ship — with no sail date in sight.

Odyssey set sail on Oct. 1, 2024, but returned to port hours later because final paperwork hadn't been completed.
The eight-deck ship can hold 650 passengers.

"No One Seems To Sell It Anymore": 27 Food Trends That Were Considered Completely Normal 30 Years Ago, But Have Since Completely Disappeared From Society
Nostalgia comes in all shapes and sizes, but one of the most intense ways to remember a time in the past is through food. And food trends change so gradually, it's hard to actually notice them in real time (that is, until it's years later and you're wondering, hey, why are there SO many weekly-menu-style cookie places around nowadays?!). So when you're confronted with an old food trend that randomly disappeared, it's an emotional cocktail of nostalgia, mystery, and curiosity. And today we're gonna talk about some of those trends, because they're honestly fascinating whether you're a foodie or not. 1. "Diners open until at least 10 p.m. during the week. I need some late night food! I get cravings for chocolate chip pancakes." — Royal_T95 2. "Philadelphia cheesecake bars." — Sandwidge_Broom "Those could instantly fix a bad day at school when one was in my lunchbox." — Stripeb49 3. "A lot of salad bars in Wisconsin went down during COVID. I understand the sanitation thing, so you can save the grandstanding. I miss the 15 various pastas, potato salads, and slaws; plus the soups that were all-you-can-eat and included in the entree. They were so good." — Upbeat-Stage2107 4. "24-hour grocery stores. Sometimes my hours suck, and I loved the peace and quiet. They're also great for sleeping in your car in their parking lot, or on long drives so you can get food and use a washroom." — Apprehensive_North49 5. "Frozen yogurt shops — all but one has disappeared from my area." — live_that_life NBC 6. "Choco Taco for the win!!" — rileyjamesdoggo 7. "I wish cupcake shops were popular again. I hate that most of my options for a slice of cake are at grocery stores now. Some local bakeries will sell cake slices or mini cakes, but sometimes I just want a simple cupcake without having to bake my own batch." — littleclaww 8. "Hot dog places. I would love a really good gourmet hot dog place that served top-quality meat and super fresh and different toppings. Amazing sides, but only hot dogs!" — OwlPrestigious543 11. "Millionaire shortbread. And casseroles in general — especially cream/soup-based ones." — Wide_Breadfruit_2217 12. "Frogeye salad. Used to be a staple at deli counters in grocery stores. I haven't seen it in forever, and I cannot bring myself to attempt to make it." — AtheneSchmidt 13. "Warm bacon salad dressings." — ennuiacres 14. "Lobster being cheaper than dirt. There is essentially infinite lobster, and there's no reason for it to be expensive." — Rare-Newspaper8530 15. "Good, affordable sandwich places. Not everyone wants fried chicken or a burger every time they eat out. What's cool about sandwich and salad places is you can kind of customize them to your liking. And sub places have become expensive as heck in my area." — Working_Cloud_909 112233 / Getty Images 18. "Jell-O 1-2-3 from the '70s. So good!!" — GracieLou540 "Oh man, that and Pudding Pops." — Spirited_Bill_8947 20. "I wish orange chiffon cakes came back. They're so nice in summer!" — mbw70 "My partner has a thing for chiffon cakes and no bakery will even make them, so I've had to (ugh!) bake them myself. The texture reminds me of a cellulose kitchen sponge. There's a good reason we went back to cakes with butter." — Genny415 22. "Can we please get restaurants back that give more options for veggies? I hate hearing 'Do you want fries or a baked potato with that?' Unless it's a buffet, you're limited, and that's usually the only reason I'll go to a buffet." — Fabulous-Reporter-21 25. "Nachos made correctly. Piled high with chips, with all the cheese and toppings intermixed in with the chips. Now all the toppings are just dumped on top of a plate of chips." — Sparkly_Polished_62 27. "Banana ice cream. It was sporadic and hard to find in the '70s, but at least it was available sometimes." — Weird-Response-1722 Mizina / Getty Images And if you're a foodie, you should follow BuzzFeed Canada on Instagram and TikTok for more! ‘SI' Swim star flaunts ample assets in rare video in lacy red lingerie
Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Penny Lane hit the catwalk recently to flaunt her flawless bikini body in barely-there, red-hot lingerie. Wearing only super-high silver stilettos and a lacy red two-piece underwear set, Lane owned the runway, with a small cover-up over her arms that she let down as she hit the end of the catwalk. The stunning swimwear influencer and star wore her blonde hair down and huge sparkly earrings. Her only message on the July 11 TikTok share was the Italian caption, 'La lingerie rossa.' The comments gave the British model, 30, perfect scores across the board. 'Have mercy,' raved one. 'That's what perfect looks like,' agreed another. 'Perfection,' said a third. '11,' commented a third. Others went with, 'That's a whole lotta woman!!,' 'Now there is a woman,' 'Holy cow Batman' and 'That's confidence.' Lane is one of the most decorated models on the Sports Illustrated circuit. In 2023, she won the iconic magazine's Swim Search competition, and the next year was crowned the coveted Rookie of the Year title. This year marked her second consecutive appearance in the print edition. On May 31, Lane joined the other models from the 2025 SI swimsuit issue for a VIP-only, sold-out runway show to close out Miami Swim Week at the ultra-chic W South Beach hotel. Also hitting the catwalk were cover stars Livvy Dunne, Lauren Chan and Jordan Chiles; plus models such as Ellie Thumann, Katie Austin, Nicole Williams English, Ilona Maher, Camille Kostek and Denise Bidot. 3 new military benefits at airports: Dedicated 'Honor Line,' TSA pre-check for Gold Star families and more
Air travel just got a little easier for members of the military with the expansion of Transportation Security Administration checkpoints. In a press conference at the Nashville International Airport on Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the new Honor Lane, along with other perks for military families and veterans. The express security lane allows uniformed military members to have a dedicated security line for expedited processing. The Honor Lane is currently available at 11 airports across the country and first opened at the Nashville Airport last month, Noem said, with plans to expand the expedited service to even more airports nationwide. "What that honor lane does is it implements a new policy that we're going to be putting across the country at all TSA security check lanes that honors our military men and women," she said. The "Serve With Honor, Travel With Ease" initiative "will be utilized with airports starting with those that are closest to our military installations," she added. DHS will also now support Gold Star families -- families of those who died during active-duty military service -- by allowing them to apply for TSA pre-check free of charge. Additionally, all military spouses can now receive a $25 pre-check enrollment discount. Noem said DHS will be deploying mobile enrollment units to military bases across the country to avoid forcing military members and spouses to travel to an airport to sign up for the benefits. "These tokens of gratitude are just a small amount of what we can do in this country to honor those who serve in our military, but also them and their families, and recognize their sacrifice," Noem said. The new benefits are officially in effect nationwide, and Noem encouraged military members and families to take advantage of them.
