Paul Pogba signs with Monaco to revive football career

PAUL Pogba has officially signed a two-year contract with Monaco, marking his return to professional football after nearly two years away. The club confirmed the deal on Saturday, bringing the 2018 World Cup winner back to the pitch following a turbulent period marked by injuries, a doping suspension, and an extortion case. Pogba, 32, has played just 12 matches over the last three seasons. His career was derailed by an 18-month doping ban after testing positive in August 2023 while at Juventus. Although his contract with the Italian club was terminated, he became a free agent in March. This move marks Pogba's first stint in Ligue 1 as a senior player. 'I am determined to get back on the pitch, mentally ready, physically ready, it's just a matter of time,' he told French television recently. The Frenchman began his career at Le Havre before joining Manchester United in 2009. After limited first-team opportunities, he moved to Juventus in 2012, winning four Serie A titles. His return to United in 2016 for a then-record €105 million was followed by struggles with injuries. Off-field issues also plagued Pogba, including a 2022 extortion case involving his brother Mathias, who was later sentenced to prison. Despite setbacks, Pogba remains a key figure in French football, having scored in the 2018 World Cup final. Monaco, who finished third in Ligue 1 last season, will compete in the Champions League, offering Pogba a platform to reignite his career.

Olivier Giroud set for final match with LAFC as they host Vancouver

THE Olivier Giroud era, such as it was, comes to an end Sunday night. The star French striker will play his final match with LAFC when it hosts Vancouver on Sunday. The much-ballyhooed signing of the 38-year old Giroud less than a year ago after successful tenures with Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League turned out to be much ado about nothing as Giroud has managed only five goals in 37 matches for LAFC. Giroud is the top goal-scorer in French national team history but simply couldn't make the mark most felt he would in MLS. He's returning to France to play for LOSC Lille. "Olivier has been a tremendous ambassador for the club on and off the field," said general manager John Thorrington. "He has been an exemplary professional." Giroud hopes for a good farewell match with LAFC (7-4-5, 26 points), which hasn't played in MLS since stopping Sporting Kansas City 3-1 on June 8. LAFC has spent the last three weeks playing in the Club World Cup, going 0-2-1 and being eliminated in the group stage. Meanwhile, Vancouver (10-3-5, 35 points) fell out of first in the Western Conference standings Wednesday night with a 5-3 home loss to expansion San Diego, which landed a point ahead in the standings. The Whitecaps have sustained consecutive losses for the first time this year. Vancouver coach Jesper Sorensen said his team needs to take initiative immediately instead of letting the game come to them. Defender Mathias Laborda is wary of the number of quality offensive threats LAFC offers, including Denis Bouanga. "They're a really good team," Laborda said. "So we expect a really good game." Bouanga has compiled eight goals and five assists to lead LAFC, while Brian White has 10 goals and a pair of assists for the Whitecaps. Even though it ceded five goals Wednesday night, Vancouver has allowed the third-fewest goals in MLS. White's two markers rallied the Whitecaps to a 2-2 draw against LAFC on May 11 in the teams' only meeting this year. — REUTERS

PSG preparing for 'emotional' reunion with Messi at Club World Cup

ATLANTA: Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said facing former player Lionel Messi will be an "emotional" reunion for both himself and the French club ahead of Sunday's Club World Cup clash against Inter Miami. Argentine great Messi joined PSG in 2021 from Barcelona, where Luis Enrique had coached him and several other current Inter Miami players. The forward departed in 2023, the same summer the Spaniard arrived at PSG, having won two Ligue 1 titles but failed to bring the French club the Champions League triumph they craved. Luis Enrique eventually led PSG to European success this season as they won the trophy for the first time by thrashing Inter Milan on May 31. "I think the game in an emotional sense is special for me, without a doubt, for the club too and the players who have been here with Messi," Luis Enrique told a news conference Saturday. The coach said he was also excited about facing Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano, all of whom he coached at Barcelona as they won the treble in 2015. "It's beautiful to see these players, who are more than just players for me, it will be special before and after the game," he continued ahead of the match in Atlanta. Luis Enrique said Messi's presence would be a motivating factor for his PSG side, who are one of the leading favourites to win the competition. "If we can't get the ball off them it won't look good for us, because Busquets is still the same, Lionel Messi with the ball is unique," he said. "Luis Suarez, you saw the last goal he scored... and on top of that they have a coach like Mascherano... "For us it's very motivating. We won the Champions League recently, but for us we have a lot of hunger still to show we have room to improve, that we want to compete. "There's no better stage to compete than in this marvellous stadium, facing a team in which there is a man who is called Leo Messi, who is a revered figure not just for Barca fans, but people who enjoy him as a player." Luis Enrique said star PSG forward Ousmane Dembele had trained this week but he would "take no risks" with the French winger for the last-16 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. After Botafogo stunned PSG in the group stage and Inter Miami surprised with a 2-1 win over Porto, Luis Enrique called on his players to maintain their concentration. "When you play in these type of competitions, and I know it perfectly well from coaching the Spanish national team, you cannot slip up whatsoever," said Luis Enrique. "You cannot pause, you cannot be excessively confident, you can't do anything wrong because 90 minutes go by very quickly, and I think it's important that from the start we try and make our mark, impose our game and that's our objective." The coach said the way to try and shackle Messi was collectively, rather than individually. "Messi can dribble (past) any player," added Luis Enrique.
