'Open Circuits' in Abu Dhabi explores curatorial collaboration

The exhibition 'Layered Medium: We Are In Open Circuits' runs through Monday
Collaborating on an exhibition sometimes poses challenges, as it requires constant communication and research until the curators succeed in drawing a visual narrative together. The metaphor 'open circuits' in the exhibition 'Layered Medium: We Are in Open Circuits' embodies not only the content of the exhibition itself but the process of co-curation.
The exhibition, which is on view at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi, is the first-ever exhibition in the Middle East to comprehensively show Korean art spanning from the 1960s to the present. It was co-curated by UK-based independent curator Maya El Khalil and Yeo Kyung-hwan of the Seoul Museum of Art.
'Creating a meaningful dialogue between curators from two countries required considerable time -- it took over a year and a half for us to evolve our genuine dialogue between perspectives and visions into the exhibition,' El Khalil said in a recent interview with The Korea Herald.
The collaborative process itself mirrored the exhibition's central concept of "open circuits,' she said.
Inspired by a 1965 statement by Korean-born video art founder Paik Nam-june that says, 'we are in open circuits,' the exhibition shows how Korean contemporary art can be interpreted in different contexts depending on the viewers, curators and the region.
'We focused on how artists have used shifts in artistic mediums to reflect on the changes that happened to them, and how they used art, new technology and innovations across media and form to process and synthesize those changes.
'Visitors appreciate that these aren't just Korean stories, but shared contemporary experiences,' El Khalil said.
Yeo said working with El Khalil triggered a change in perspectives for co-curation, which she had considered 'almost impossible.' The exhibition in Abu Dhabi evolved from an exhibition in Seoul held last year, titled 'SeMA Omnibus: At the End of the World Split Endlessly," which reexamined the museum's collection.
'The original concept and exhibition were renewed and revisited for our current exhibition as a result of my co-curation with Maya El Khalil,' Yeo said. 'The exhibition is a form of storytelling, highlighting how different generations of artists responded to key moments in Korea's political and cultural history.
'By framing this in a non-linear, conceptual way, we offer audiences in Abu Dhabi a deeper understanding of how Korean avant-garde art was shaped by and continues to shape larger global narratives,' she said.
Forty-eight works in the exhibition include those by artists who have recently garnered global attention -- such as Lee Bul, Yang Hae-gue, Lee Kun-yong, Chung Seo-young and Kang Seok-yeong -- demonstrating how Korean contemporary art has continuously renewed itself in a changing world.
'This mirrors the dynamic cultural identity of Abu Dhabi, where the traditions of the past and the drive for innovation coexist, highlighting that we are standing within an open circuit,' Yeo added.
A companion exhibition, 'Intense Proximities,' will take place in December at Seoul Museum of Art, featuring a collection from Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation, the co-organizer of the Abu Dhabi exhibition along with SeMA, as well as other significant works by UAE-based practitioners.
'For the past decade, the focus of the Seoul Museum of Art's international exchanges has primarily been with non-Western regions, such as Asia, the Middle East and South America. We are no longer concerned with following the Western art flow or its historical canon,' Yeo said.
She continued: 'Rather, our focus lies in the recognition of art as one of many diverse branches, with increasing attention to the historical and cultural 'glocal' context that shapes each region's unique identity.'
El Khalil suggests art serves as a 'crucial interface' for processing and relating to the changing world on different scales, and as a curator, she believes she creates frameworks that allow audiences to encounter shared experiences.
'It's about dialogue and opening circuits of meaning rather than simply presenting objects or delivering predetermined messages,' she said of her curatorial philosophy.
'In our increasingly complex world, fraught with technological, social, geopolitical and urban change, art shows us that we're not passive observers but always active participants creating meaning and connection,' she added.

Award-winning poet discusses 'What Is Korean Literature to the International Reader?' at the 2025 LTI Korea Global Literature Forum Translated literature is a gift to the language it arrives in, acclaimed poet Kim Hye-soon said, describing it as the Korean language offering a present — 'like tossing a new pebble into the well of another language.' 'I think translating Korean literature isn't about elevating Korea's literary status. Rather, it's about expanding the boundaries of the target language. Translation is a reciprocal relationship, not a one-way transaction,' Kim said. 'We already know how much the boundaries of Korean have broadened through translations of foreign works — how our ways of thinking have deepened and diversified. I believe the same holds true in reverse.' Kim spoke at the 2025 LTI Korea Global Literature Forum during a wide-ranging onstage conversation with Jeffrey Yang, editor-at-large at New Directions, on the topic 'What Is Korean Literature to the International Reader?' New Directions has published two of Kim's recent English collections: 'Autobiography of Death' and 'Phantom Pain Wings,' both translated by Choi Don Mee. Fresh from a monthlong European book tour through Germany, Austria and the UK, Kim said conversations with international audiences had energized her in unexpected ways. 'Through these exchanges, I feel as though we're expanding the 'territory of poetry.' Maybe that's why we call out to poets from afar,' she said. Kim also reflected on the contrast between how literature is discussed at home and abroad. 'In Korea, I'm often asked about 'Korean literature' — where it should be heading, what its defining characteristics are — but honestly, I don't even know where 'my own literature' is headed.' 'Outside the country, however, I've always had the impression that people focus more on individual works rather than national categories. I can't recall being asked a question framed around nationality, and we don't approach their writers that way either.' While she's happy to recommend Korean poets when asked abroad and welcomes growing international interest in Korean literature, Kim noted that she has never thought of herself as writing 'Korean literature.' 'I've always just seen myself as doing 'literature,'' she said, adding that she hopes policymakers will move beyond broad national labels and show greater respect for each writer's individuality. 'Translation is creative act' Kim has been steadily gaining international recognition, winning numerous accolades worldwide. In 2019, she became the first Asian woman to win Canada's prestigious Griffin Poetry Prize. More recently, she was named an International Writer by the Royal Society of Literature in England in 2022, elected an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April, and shortlisted for Germany's international prize for literature this year. Despite these honors, Kim remains candid about her uncertainty over why her work resonates with readers abroad. 'That's the part I really don't understand. Whether in Korea or elsewhere, I don't know exactly why I have readers. Some may be drawn to the way the translation offers a familiar way of speaking, while others might be intrigued by its unfamiliarity. I think I fall into the latter group.' What has moved her most, however, is not the prizes but what happens to her translators. 'The most striking moments for me are when those who translated my poems later debuted as poets themselves. Some began writing poems while translating my work, opened up their own poetic worlds, published collections and went on to win major awards. That has been the most memorable part.' She cited Choi, her longtime English translator, who often says that translating Kim's poems sparked her own writing practice. 'Just as I discover my poems in the sound drifting through this world, I think there's a similar kind of discovery at work in poetry translation. Translation is not just word-by-word interpretation; it is a creative act.' Kim shared her views on the art of poetry translation itself. 'I believe that translating poetry begins with translating its form and rhythm,' she said. 'When translators ask me what I want most from them, I always tell them: 'Translate the rhythm.'' She also acknowledged the inevitable challenges and occasional mistranslations in the process. 'Sometimes a homonym might be misunderstood, for example, the word for 'tribe' was translated as 'lack,' or 'starting a pilgrimage' was rendered as 'ending a pilgrimage,'' she said. But she emphasized that translation is not about nitpicking such errors. 'I think of translation as translating the house the poet built,' she said. 'The mistakes I mention are more like a cup placed slightly askew on a shelf in that house, a small detail, but the house itself remains intact.'

Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-wai's first TV series 'Blossoms Shanghai' to air on SBS

Award-winning series to hit Korean TV, streaming services Studio S, the drama production arm of Seoul Broadcasting System, is bringing Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-wai's first-ever television series 'Blossoms Shanghai' to South Korean audiences. The period drama will premiere Monday on SBS F!L UHD, with streaming availability beginning Tuesday on multiple streaming channels, including Tving, Watcha, Wavve, KT GenieTV, LG U+TV and SK Broadband Btv. 'Blossoms Shanghai' marks Wong's long-awaited series debut. Widely regarded as one of Asia's most influential filmmakers, Wong is known for acclaimed features such as "In the Mood for Love" (2000), "Chungking Express" (1994) and "Happy Together" (1997). Set in 1990s Shanghai, "Blossoms Shanghai" follows Ah Bao (Hu Ge), a young man from modest beginnings who rises to wealth amidst the city's rapid economic transformation. Based on Jin Yucheng's 2012 novel of the same name, which won China's prestigious Mao Dun Literature Prize, the project has been years in the making. Wong acquired the rights in 2014 and spent roughly seven years developing the series, with three additional years dedicated to production. 'Blossoms Shanghai' originally premiered in December 2023 on China's television channel CCTV-8 and China's streaming service Tencent Video. The series went on to earn the best creative award at the Asia Contents Awards held alongside the Busan International Film Festival in 2024.

Brands launch new matcha products to ride the rapidly growing trend Once a niche drink favored by tea lovers, matcha is now at the center of a global frenzy. As social media influencers, celebrities and wellness enthusiasts have embraced powdered green tea for its health benefits and aesthetic appeal, demand has skyrocketed. Matcha, a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves, has become the beverage of choice for a new generation that prizes both clean living and visual flair. The vibrant green drink has been widely promoted by global stars like Blackpink's Jennie, who recently shared her homemade iced matcha routine on YouTube, and Hollywood figures such as Dua Lipa and Zendaya, who have been spotted sipping matcha drinks in Instagram posts. Matcha's appeal lies in its balance of energy and calm. Though it contains less caffeine than coffee — around 70mg per serving compared to coffee's 120mg— it offers longer-lasting, more stable stimulation. It is also believed to help reduce stress, making it especially attractive to wellness-conscious consumers. The surge in popularity has even spilled into internet culture, where matcha memes, aesthetic latte tutorials and unboxing videos of premium matcha powders have helped drive its visibility. Starbucks Korea released a matcha twist on its seasonal choux cream latte this spring. The drink, along with its original version, sold over 2 million cups within two weeks of launch. Starbucks has also expanded its matcha lineup to include beverages like the Jeju matcha yogurt blended and matcha tiramisu latte. Lotte Wellfood, formerly Lotte Confectionery, has launched matcha-flavored ice creams under its popular brands World Cone, Sulleim and Tico to tap into the rising matcha trend among Generation Z consumers. Similarly, cafe franchise Paul Bassett has introduced new shaved ice desserts, including the Jeju matcha hallabong bingsu. Knotted, a Korean bakery and dessert cafe brand, has recently announced its 'Too Mucha Matcha' campaign, unveiling 11 new matcha-based items ranging from donuts and salted bread to drinks and bingsu, reflecting the matcha craze. According to market research firm The Business Research Company, the global matcha market will grow from $3.84 billion in 2024 to $4.24 billion in 2025, with an annual growth rate of 10.3 percent. By 2029, the industry is expected to reach $6.4 billion.
