India women's team suffers second consecutive defeat against Uzbekistan

The Hindu03-06-2025
The senior Indian women's national team suffered a second narrow defeat at the hands of Uzbekistan, going down 0-1 in the second FIFA women's international friendly at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence on Tuesday.
Despite an improved and spirited performance, the Blue Tigresses were undone by a moment of brilliance from Nilufar Kudratova early in the second half.
Unlike the first fixture, where India looked cautious and struggled in transition, the hosts played on the front foot, pressing higher up the pitch and trying to take the game to the visitor.
The defence, led by the tireless efforts of Thokchom Martina and her backline partners, worked hard to contain Uzbekistan's pacey attack.

The best chance for India came in the 21st minute. Ranjana whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, which Pyari Xaxa met with a strong header at the far post. The Uzbekistan keeper managed a reflex save, and though the rebound fell kindly to Sangita, she failed to direct her shot on target.
That missed opportunity would come back to haunt India. Just four minutes into the second half, Uzbekistan struck. Kudratova picked up the ball on the edge of the box, skipped past two defenders with elegant footwork, and unleashed a fierce left-footed strike that flew past Payal Basude into the top corner.
The setback seemed to momentarily unsettle the Blue Tigresses, but they regrouped and pushed forward again. Soumya Guguloth and Pyari Xaxa continued to test the Uzbekistan defence, while substitutes brought fresh energy. However, despite several promising moves, the final pass or shot often lacked the sharpness needed to level the score.

Akash Deep, who produced an impressive ten-wicket haul in India's historic win in second Test against England at Edgbaston, dedicating his stellar performance in the second Test to his sister, who has been battling cancer for the past few months. As per a report in IANS News Agency, Indian pacer Akash Deep wasn't preparing for international cricket in training camps or stadiums before the England tour. Instead, he was running between hospital corridors, caring for his ailing sister. While carrying the weight of his dreams and his sister's suffering, he stood tall, silently and bravely. Even the joy of earning a spot in the national team couldn't fully sink in - because a part of his heart remained at home, with his sister, who was fighting a far bigger battle. Following India's memorable victory over England in the second Test at Edgbaston, an emotional Akash Deep opened up about the pain he had kept hidden from the world. "I have not told this to anyone. My elder sister has been suffering from cancer for the last two months. She is now stable, and she is fine. I think she will be the happiest (seeing my performance). I want to dedicate this match to her. I wanted to see a smile on her face," Akash Deep said in a heartfelt conversation with Sony Sports. "This is for you. Whenever I held the ball in my hand, your face was in my mind. I want to see happiness on your face. We are all with you," he added. Family is everything! Five Indians book final berths at World Boxing Cup

Abhinash Jamwal (men's 65kg) is keeping India in hunt for another gold medal with his semifinal slated later in the day. India's boxing contingent in Kazakhstan is now assured of 11 podium finishes, including six gold medal bouts on Sunday. Astana (Kazakhstan), Jul 5 (PTI) Meenakshi, Sakshi, Pooja Rani, Hitesh Gulia and Jugnoo registered convincing victories to reach the finals of their respective weight categories at the World Boxing Cup, here on Saturday. Meenakshi started India's march with an aggressive display to beat Nurselen Yalgettekin of Turkey 5-0 in the 48kg semi-final. Sakshi then displayed her prowess, landing punches regularly to dominate Feruza Kazakova of Uzbekistan and reached the final of the 54kg weight category by an identical margin. Olympian Pooja Rani then staved off late charge Elif Guneri of Turkey in the 80kg category to reach the final with a 3-2 verdict. Nupur had already sealed her final berth in the 80+ category on Friday, making it four Indian women boxers in the finals. Sanju (60kg) fought hard before going down to Viktoriya Grafeyeva of Kazakhstan in a 0-5 verdict and will have to bring home a bronze medal. India had clinched a total of six medals in the first leg of the World Boxing Cup in Brazil earlier this year with only the men boxers competing in that leg. This is the first time that the women pugilists are competing at the World Boxing Cup. In the men's 70kg, Brazil leg gold medallist Hitesh Gulia looked in trouble after the first round against France's Makan Traore. But the 20-year-old landed quite a few punches in the second round to close the gap and wrapped it up with yet another convincing display in the third and final round to reach the final. Jugnoo (men's 85kg) then added to the celebratory mood in the Indian camp with a 5-0 thumping of England's Teagn Scott. PTI TAP DDV This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
