How to use credit cards smartly to earn rewards on UPI transactions
Thanks to a move by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in 2022, you can link RuPay credit cards to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and earn rewards on your daily transactions. Since then, most major banks have introduced RuPay variants of their credit cards, including versions of their Visa or MasterCard cards, which can be used for UPI payments. Some have even launched exclusive UPI credit cards offering 1.5–5% cashback.
This story breaks down how to effectively use credit cards to earn rewards on UPI transactions and lists some of the most rewarding cards in this category.
All about UPI credit card
A UPI credit card allows users to pay merchants via UPI using their credit card instead of a bank account. However, these payments are restricted to customer-to-merchant (C2M) transactions only, not peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers. This limitation prevents users from misusing credit by revolving credit and sending funds to the bank accounts of friends or family.
When attempting to pay a UPI ID or scan a QR code linked to a personal account rather than a merchant, the credit card option will not appear. This means you stand to earn rewards while paying a grocery store or an auto driver through their business UPI QR using your credit card, but you cannot use this method to send rent to your landlord.
UPI credit cards are especially helpful to users in tier-II and smaller cities, where many small merchants do not have POS machines, but most accept UPI.

Why aren't all merchants accepting it yet?
Despite a strong start, UPI payments via credit cards have seen some pullback from merchants due to merchant discount rate (MDR)—a fee businesses must pay to banks or card networks for processing such payments. Regular UPI transactions don't carry this charge, but credit card-based UPI payments do.
'Almost all payment gateways charge a normal card's MDR if the payment amount exceeds ₹2,000 per transaction. Shops like medical stores and local grocery stores, where the bill can be more than ₹2,000, are disabling the RuPay UPI option to avoid MDR charges," said Sumanta Mandal, founder, TechnoFino, a digital platform.
However, since daily UPI payments are made to small merchants, these are generally under ₹2,000 per transaction.

Can I use my existing cards?
Customers with credit cards from networks like MasterCard or Visa who want to make UPI payments through their credit cards can request their bank to issue a virtual Rupay variant of the same card for that purpose. While it's a separate card, the credit limit is part of the overall limit of the primary card.
In the past year, some banks have launched credit cards exclusively designed to reward UPI spending such as HDFC Tata Neu, Yes Bank Klick, Axis Bank Supermoney, and Jupiter Edge CSB.
Of these, Axis Supermoney card and Yes Bank Klick card used on Kiwi app currently offer the best reward rates up to 3% and 5%, respectively, as per Kashif Ansari,an assistant professor of finance at OP Jindal University and a credit card expert. 'HDFC Tata Neu used to be the most rewarding, but Axis Supermoney and Kiwi are far superior now," according to Ansari
Mandal said, 'Both Yes Bank Klick and HDFC Tata Neu give 1.5% value back when used on partner UPI apps. However, the Tata Neu app is slow."
Both these cards are launched in association with third-party UPI apps–Yes Bank and Kiwi and Axis Bank and Supermoney (Flipkart owned)–and offer highest rewards only when used on these apps.

Yes Bank Klick–Kiwi card rewards on scan and pay UPI payments made through Kiwi app. The base reward rate is 1.5%, which increases to 2% if you opt for Kiwi Neon membership.
The major restrictions on this card are that it rewards on a minimum ₹100 payment and that there are many exclusions. Categories that don't earn rewards or add to spending milestones include utilities, insurance, jewellery, financial institutions, educational institutions, government services, and retail outlets, such as apparel stores.
Axis Supermoney card rewards a flat 3% cashback on all scan and pay UPI payments done on the supermoney app. However, the maximum monthly cashback is capped at ₹500. This means you earn cashback on eligible UPI spends of upto ₹16,667 every month. The upside with this card is that it is a physical card and hence can be used for offline transactions also that earn 1% cashback, subject to the monthly ₹500 cap. All other non-UPI online payments also earn 1% cashback.
Several spending categories are excluded from earning rewards on this card as well, including fuel, jewellery, cash withdrawal, wallet load, insurance, education, government services and rent.
Ansari said UPI credit cards are meant for small regular payments made to small merchants who don't offer POS services. Hence, such exclusions are expected.

RBI to conduct 2-day VRRR auction to drain Rs 1 trillion in liquidity
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) plans to conduct a two-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction on Wednesday for a notified amount of Rs 1 trillion. This move comes as system liquidity remains in surplus at Rs 3.4 trillion (as of Monday), despite two seven-day VRRR auctions by the central bank. The surplus liquidity has kept the overnight weighted average call rate (WACR) — the operating target of monetary policy — near the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate of 5.25 percent, and much below the repo rate of 5.50 percent. 'System liquidity will only increase from here as government expenditure picks up, and from September, the CRR cut will come into effect. This could push liquidity levels to as high as Rs 5 trillion by November–December, assuming neutral impact from foreign exchange operations. So, they had to move early to ensure overnight rates remain within the policy corridor. This operation will shift the weighted average call rate closer to the repo rate and, more importantly, pull the TREPS rate above the SDF, which it had consistently fallen below despite previous 7-day VRRRs,' said Gaura Sen Gupta, Chief Economist at IDFC FIRST Bank. 'The 100 bps CRR cut will release Rs 2.5 trillion into the banking system.' The overnight WACR settled at 5.26 percent on Tuesday, while the overnight TREPS rate settled at 5.13 percent. Market participants said that the auction, maturing on Friday, is expected to draw strong demand from banks. 'Because it's a two-day VRRR, it will attract good demand from banks. The RBI may continue such short-tenure operations as long as surplus remains above 1 percent of NDTL. With overnight rates currently trading below the repo rate, the central bank is using VRRRs to keep rates within the LAF corridor, ensuring orderly liquidity conditions without aggressively draining surplus,' said V R C. Reddy, head of treasury at Karur Vysya Bank. The RBI's VRRR operations are aimed at absorbing surplus liquidity from the system and anchoring short-term rates closer to the policy repo rate. The RBI had received bids amounting to Rs 1.70 trillion at its seven-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction on Friday, against the notified amount of Rs 1 trillion. The central bank accepted Rs 1 trillion at a cut-off rate of 5.47 percent. The recent liquidity surplus can largely be attributed to higher government spending and lower-than-expected GST collections, which have eased the usual liquidity pressures. As a result, the liquidity drain was not as sharp as anticipated, experts said, adding that with the RBI already having reduced the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), its room for deploying other measures for liquidity withdrawal apart from VRRR is limited.

UPI gains global ground as transactions surge and new partnerships emerge
New Delhi [India] July 8 (ANI): Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's flagship digital payments system, continues to reshape the country's digital economy while also emerging as a tool of diplomatic outreach and international collaboration. Beyond enabling instant P2P and P2M money transfers, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has steadily introduced new features on UPI to enhance the user experience and move beyond the commoditized space of payments. These include cross-border payments, integrations with loan and insurance services, and various other unique offerings. The growing international footprint of UPI was on display during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Trinidad and Tobago on July 3-4. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, 'The two countries expressed strong interest in expanding cooperation in the digital domain. Prime Minister Modi congratulated Trinidad and Tobago on becoming the first Caribbean country to adopt Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's flagship digital payment platform.' The MEA added, 'They agreed to explore further collaboration in the implementation of India Stack solutions, including DigiLocker, e-Sign, and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). Trinidad and Tobago requested support from India in digitization and upgradation of the system for state land registration. The leaders also underlined that digital governance and public service delivery can act as enablers of inclusive development, innovation and national competitiveness.' This diplomatic milestone follows another notable development during PM Modi's official visit to Cyprus in June 2025, where NPCI and Eurobank Cyprus reached an understanding to introduce UPI for cross-border payments between the two countries, aimed at deepening their economic engagement. Domestically, UPI usage continues to scale new heights. In June 2025 alone, the platform recorded transactions worth Rs 24,03,930 crore. The growth in UPI's adoption has been exponential, with both transaction value and volume registering YoY increases measured in multiples rather than percentages. Adding a new dimension to how market sentiment gauges' digital trends, India's largest opinion trading platform, Probo, has seen increasing trader interest in UPI-related forecasts. An event contract on Probo - as of July 8, with approximately 3,000 active traders - assigns an 80% probability that UPI transaction value will hit or exceed Rs 25,00,000 crore in July 2025. As of July 7, per the NPCI official website the UPI transaction value had reached Rs 6,60,102 crore. (ANI)

RBI announces ₹1 trn reverse repo auction on July 9 to absorb liquidity
India's central bank said on Tuesday it will conduct a two-day variable rate reverse repo auction worth Rs 1 trillion ($11.67 billion) on July 9 . The move follows the central bank's decision last week to conduct a seven-day variable rate reverse repo auction worth Rs 1 trillion, which was held on July 4. Earlier, on June 24, the RBI scrapped its plan to conduct a 14-day main operation scheduled for June 27, instead announcing a seven-day variable rate reverse repo auction. The RBI's measured approach to withdrawing banking system liquidity will likely keep overnight interbank lending rates between the policy repo rate and the floor of the policy corridor, analysts said, allowing some policy transmission. The central bank cut its policy rate by a steeper-than-expected 50 basis points last month, shifted its stance to 'neutral', and halted liquidity infusions. It resumed absorption operations on June 27 after overnight rates fell below the policy corridor.
