Prayagraj administration cracks down on 2,000 PMAY defaulters

Time of India25-05-2025
PRAYAGRAJ
: The
Prayagraj district administration
has launched recovery proceedings against over 2,000 beneficiaries of the
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
(
PMAY
) who received funds but failed to construct their houses. After sending notices, the administration is now preparing to issue Recovery Certificates (RCs) from the respective tehsils to reclaim the misused public funds.
A total of 1,507 rural beneficiaries under
PMAY-Gramin
and 504 urban beneficiaries under PMAY-Urban did not complete their homes despite receiving government assistance. Notably, nearly 470 individuals in the urban sector received financial aid almost six years ago but have yet to build their houses, despite receiving all instalments.
Of these, more than 400 beneficiaries did not even lay the foundation for their houses. Another 100 managed to build only partial structures such as incomplete walls. Urban areas such as Jhalwa, Dhoomanganj, Salori, Baghara, Rajapur, Kareli and Rajrooppur have the highest concentration of defaulters. Similarly, beneficiaries from towns like Sirsa, Bharatganj, Koraon, Shankargarh, Handia, Phulpur, Mauaima and Lal Gopalganj also failed to utilise the sanctioned funds appropriately.
The issue is particularly widespread in rural areas, where approximately 1,450 beneficiaries across tehsils such as Koraon, Meja, Karchhana, Bara, Phulpur, and Handia failed to initiate construction despite receiving all installments of government aid. In most cases, the homes did not progress beyond the foundation stage, with some plots not even undergoing excavation.
To address this issue, the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) is preparing to send a formal report to the concerned tehsils for the issuance of Recovery Certificates (RCs) against urban defaulters. DUDA is also working on similar documentation for rural areas to take further action.
Chief development officer Harshika Singh emphasised that beneficiaries who receive financial aid under the PMAY must ensure the funds are used strictly for home construction. Those who ignored three notices and failed to show progress in construction will now face strict recovery action.
This crackdown is part of a broader move to enforce accountability and ensure that govt schemes reach genuine beneficiaries who intend to utilise the support for their intended purpose, say officials of the district administration.

Well, well, well... no surface water, third tender goes dryLudhiana civic body faces challenges in finalising contractor for surface water supply project under world bank and amrut schemes.

Ludhiana: City's plan to replace its groundwater-dependent water supply with treated canal water has hit a snag, as civic officials struggle to finalise a contractor for the pilot phase of the ₹50 crore project backed by the World Bank and AMRUT 2.0 schemes. The Municipal Corporation has now floated tenders for the third time — after unsuccessful bids in April and May — to develop demo zones for the transition, despite construction in progress at a water treatment plant in Bilga village and associated overhead tanks. The demo zones, intended to test the system before citywide rollout, will include 14,000 homes across six localities. These zones are split between the two schemes: Jagat Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Tarsem Colony, and Silver City under the AMRUT scheme; and Urban Estate Dugri Phases 1 and 2 and Urban Estate Phases 1 and 2 along Chandigarh Road under the World Bank-funded canal water plan. Currently, Ludhiana draws an estimated 450 million litres of water daily from underground sources via tube wells. Officials say the new surface water system will not only provide the city with a more sustainable supply but also ensure uninterrupted access throughout the day. As part of the pilot, water meters may be installed in households, although billing remains undecided. Municipal commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal said the demo zone will help address unforeseen technical challenges. "We are trying again and again to find a suitable contractor to handle this work," he said. "Hopefully, we will succeed this time." The broader goal, as civic authorities claim, is to modernise water infrastructure, improve delivery, and reduce ecological pressure on groundwater sources. MSID:: 122405570 413 |

Gram rozgar sevak caught taking bribe for housing aid

Vadodara: Sleuths of the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) caught a gram rozgar sevak (GRS) while allegedly accepting a bribe for assistance provided under a housing scheme in Mahisagar district. He demanded the bribe after the beneficiary had received two instalments. The accused, Mahesh Vankar, was employed on contract for 11 months. He was responsible for overseeing aid given for construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Vankar allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 from the first and second instalments of aid. Vankar told the complainant, whose identity was not disclosed by the ACB, that if he did not pay, Vankar would ensure that the third instalment did not come. The complainant did not want to pay the bribe and approached the ACB with a complaint. ACB sleuths laid a trap to nab Vankar and he was caught red-handed accepting Rs 10,000 as a bribe.
