Stakeholders want State as a unit, not district, for implementation of free bus ride for women in Andhra Pradesh
While Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has indicated that the district will be considered as a unit for implementing the scheme, key stakeholders, including officials of the A.P. State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), have expressed concern over the feasibility of the model.
According to sources in the Transport Department, implementation of the scheme at the district level may lead to operational difficulties, besides complications in route monitoring and enforcement of eligibility across inter-district services.
A more unified State-wide implementation, the officials feel, will ensure smoother coordination and reduce the risk of misuse, or logistical bottlenecks.
'Restriction on travel within districts will lead to confusion for women who need to travel across district borders. A uniform policy at the State level will be more inclusive and manageable,' says a senior APSRTC official.
'A final call on the issue will be taken after the Chief Minister returns from Delhi,' says Transport Minister M. Ramprasad Reddy.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Ramprasad Reddy said the government was in the process of procuring 2,000 new buses to augment the existing fleet and support the anticipated surge in passengers once the scheme was launched. 'While the buses may not arrive in time for the rollout, they will be inducted into the fleet in a phased manner,' the Minister said.
Currently, women commuters comprise 35% of the Occupancy Ratio (OR) in the APSRTC buses as against 65% men. 'After rolling out the scheme, the number of women passengers may rise to 65% of the OR,' said the Minister.
From a financial standpoint, the Minister said it would be an annual expenditure of ₹2,000 crore, which was significantly lower than other schemes under the government's Super Six promises.
Mr. Ramprasad Reddy said the new buses would be operated under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, a framework where private operators supply and maintain buses, while the APSRTC would manage operations and collect revenue.
Union fears loss of jobs
However, the GCC model is being opposed by the A.P. Public Transport Department Employees' Unions, whihc fear losing jobs in the future. They have been insisting that the APSRTC operate and maintain the new buses proposed to be included in the fleet.
'Already, 25% of the buses in the fleet are being operated by private firms. This is a growing concern among the workers in the public transport organisation,' said union State president P. Damodar Rao.
He said the existing 11,500 buses in the fleet and 46,000 staff were needed to be augmented before the launch of the scheme. 'The corporation already relies on over 5,000 on-call drivers for its day-to-day operations,' he said, indicating the extent of staff crunch.

SAAP chief tears into Jagan for inciting violence
Vijayawada: Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) chairman A Ravi Naidu alleged the YSRCP president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is inciting the youth of Andhra Pradesh and pushing them toward violent politics. He alleged Jagan Mohan Reddy is misleading the youth through a calculated campaign involving substance abuse and criminal politics. He alleged that under the direction of Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy, this dangerous trend is gaining momentum in the state. Addressing the media at IGMC stadium here on Thursday, the SAAP chairman said wherever Jagan travels, there's more drama and intimidation than talk of welfare or development. He cited recent visits to Palnadu and Chittoor as examples of such incidents. Ravi Naidu alleged former CM and his followers are creating unrest with provocative slogans and giving statements that could lead to violence. He said Jagan Mohan Reddy is dreaming of vengeance instead of development, and warned that such negative campaigning will not help him return to power. He said, 'the opposition should stand with the people and strive to solve their problems, not incite violence.'. Ravi Naidu urged parents to keep a watchful eye on their children and not let them be influenced by such political forces. He said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, and IT minister Nara Lokesh are working day and night to attract major industries and investments to Andhra Pradesh. He said the state of AP is on a path of progress under the alliance government and criticised that Jagan is unable to accept this. Task force wants Andhra Pradesh to take a cue from States like Tamil Nadu to tap potential of blue economy
The Task Force on Economic Development for Swarna Andhra Pradesh @ 2047, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has recommended that the State government, in order to tap the potential of the blue economy, should draw lessons from other coastal States that are moving fast in the area. It has cited as examples Tamil Nadu (T.N.), which is sustainably harnessing its ocean resources through the T.N. Coastal Restoration Mission, and several international instances, especially the Nordic countries. It has also suggested that the government should plan a hi-tech city along the proposed ring road around Amaravati, covering Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and other hi-tech industrial hubs / centres, and to consider emulating the Sri City model across the State to give a fillip to the electronics, semiconductor and drones sector. Integrated IT parks Besides, the task force has suggested the development of integrated IT parks and incubation centres, while offering sector-specific incentives, particularly for R&D, in Anantapur, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam, framing of a dedicated AI policy, and setting up of an AI sandbox for nurturing entrepreneurs, facilitating the factors of production, and promoting skill development among the youth. Another significant recommendation is to undertake a study to identify challenges, gaps and growth opportunities for building a strategic roadmap for the State to become a Clinical Trial hub, and to elevate the State's positioning in India's MedTech industry by nurturing a robust innovation ecosystem. Petrochemical sector To capture the emerging opportunities in downstream industries in the petrochemical sector, like bioplastics, the task force has recommended to the government to announce a dedicated policy for chemicals and petrochemicals, and to fast-track ongoing projects in the Visakhapatnam-Kakinada Petroleum, Chemical & Petrochemical Investment Region (PCPIR). It has been noted that the petrochemical industry is now concentrated in a few States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, and the coastal regions such as Andhra Pradesh have significant prospects to capture some of the opportunities. Aerospace Visualising opportunities in shipbuilding, submarine MRO, aerospace OEM, precision manufacturing and defence electronics, testing centres for ammunition and components (specifically in Kurnool), and propulsion systems and rocket technology development, the task force has recommended that the government should fast-track the development of already identified Aerospace & Defence Industrial Parks and plan more in the PPP mode with plug-and-play infra. It has also suggested the setting up of defence testing infrastructure as a common facility under the private sector, establishing an air cargo complex as an integrated facility housing both domestic and international cargo terminals around the new international airports in Visakhapatnam and Amaravati / Vijayawada, and creating a thriving ecosystem for R&D with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Satish Dhawan Space Centre and other private players.

Street vendors demand action against zonal officials for demolishing 41 authorised shops near Ripon Buildings
The Chennai Street Vendors Federation and the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) submitted a petition to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) requesting disciplinary action against officials of Royapuram zone responsible for the demolition of more than 40 authorised shops near Central railway station and Ripon Buildings and allot space for the vendors who were evicted from the spot recently. According to the petitioners, 41 vendors had been legally authorised by the GCC to run shops at the spot. They had received a written approval in December 2024. During the eviction drive, carried out in the early morning of July 12, the GCC and police officials demolished the shops without prior notice or presenting any official order, the CITU alleged. The union members cited sections under the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, which outlined the procedures and safeguards against eviction and urged the GCC to take action against the officials responsible for the 'wrongful eviction'. Street vendors have planned further protests if the GCC takes no action, said G. Selva, Chennai Central secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Katta Ravi Teja, Regional Deputy Commissioner (North), said an inspection would carried out soon to ascertain the reason for the eviction, and if the vendors were authorised by the GCC.
