Tiong channels RM2.2 mln to Sibu groups, stresses accountability and real impact
SIBU (July 17): A total of RM2.2 million in federal allocations was distributed to 152 recipients here today, with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, underscoring the need for accountability and meaningful use of public funds.
Of the total, RM1.55 million was disbursed to 137 recipients under the Special Project Allocation (PPK), while another RM660,000 went to 15 recipients under the Special Allocation by Minister (PKM).
Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman, was represented by his special duties officer Agatha Ting during the cheque presentation ceremony held at the United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu hall.
In delivering his speech through Ting, Tiong reminded all recipients that public funds must not be wasted or used for personal gain.
'I hope these funds will be used properly and not just for the sake of spending, but to truly benefit the community.
'Every sen must go for something meaningful, not wasted or personal advantages,' he said.
He added that recipients are required to submit a full report on how the funds are used as a condition for any future support.
'So you must submit your report. If there's no report, how can you get another round of support?
'I want to help, but you must also do your part. Be accountable. Only then I can continue to justify giving more funding to support your organisations,' he said.
Aside from the cheque allocations, five laptops and printers were presented to longhouse residents, along with 10 hampers for local youth members.
Also in attendance were Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong Division chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew and PDP Pelawan chairman Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong. funds Sibu Tiong King Sing

Seven new bypass roads proposed across Tripura to boost connectivity: CM Manik Saha
Agartala (Tripura) [India], July 20 (ANI): In a major push towards infrastructure development, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that seven new bypass roads have been proposed across the state to ease traffic and enhance connectivity. CM Saha reiterated the government's commitment on Saturday to linking all district and subdivision headquarters, as well as unconnected habitations, to national highways via double-lane roads. CM Saha made these remarks while addressing the National Seminar on Infrastructure Development in the North-East Region of India, held at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala. He highlighted the government's long-term infrastructure vision, asserting that robust infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth and regional empowerment. 'Without infrastructure, nothing can be achieved. Roads, highways, airports, water supply, and urban infrastructure play a key role in industrial growth, service expansion, and social welfare,' the Chief Minister said. He emphasised that the state has undertaken numerous transformative initiatives in the past seven years that have significantly improved its socio-economic landscape. Saha revealed that a 449 km ring road has been proposed for Agartala under the Bharatmala scheme. The alignment includes the Agartala Bypass from Khayerpur to Amtali, an Eastern Bypass from Lembuchara to Khayerpur, and a Western Bypass connecting Lembuchara to Amtali. Flyover construction is also on the cards, with the Radhanagar to IGM Hospital flyover to be undertaken in the first phase. The seven new bypass roads are proposed at Kumargarh, Dhanpur, Manu, Ambassa, Teliamura, Ranirbazar, and Jirania, all key towns where national highways currently run through congested areas. 'In the previous budget, over Rs7,000 crore was allocated specifically for infrastructure development,' he added. Tripura CM provided detailed statistics on Tripura's existing road infrastructure, stating that the total Public Works Department (PWD) road length in the state is 10,618.423 kilometres. This includes 1,057 kilometres of state highways, 171 kilometres of major district roads, 483 kilometres of other district roads, 1,167 kilometres of urban roads, and 7,740 kilometres of village roads. The national highway network in the state spans 923 kilometres, out of which 509 kilometres have already been upgraded to double-lane roads with paved shoulders. Additionally, four more national highways covering a total distance of 229 kilometres have been declared in principle. Plans are in place to upgrade the entire 1,057 km of state highways to double-lane roads, he added. Highlighting Tripura's strategic importance, CM Saha said, 'The northeastern region is India's powerhouse with massive hydropower, petroleum, and gas potential. Tripura, sharing borders with Bangladesh, can serve as a vital gateway to Southeast Asia.' He also mentioned the nearing completion of the Light House Project, and construction of the Unity Mall and several high-rise departmental buildings, aimed at modernising Tripura's urban landscape. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Engineer Chinmay Debnath, Engineer O.P. Goel, Indian Building Congress President Engineer Rajiv Dabbrama, PWD Chief Engineer Engineer Shyamlal Bhowmik, and other senior officials and stakeholders in the infrastructure sector. (ANI)

Nga urges MPs to back litter law with community service to clean up for Visit Malaysia 2026
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has today implored all MPs to support a proposed amendment to enforce community service orders against offenders caught littering. Nga said the proposed amendment is aimed at ensuring the success of Visit Malaysia 2026, as the country renews its push to bring in 35.6 million tourists in 2026. 'We want to ensure that when tourists visit Malaysia, it is clean and attractive, which is why we are asking for the cooperation of all MPs to support this law unanimously, as it has been proven effective in developed countries like Sweden, Japan and Singapore. 'Now is the time. We can't wait. We will make sure the law comes into force this year itself,' he told reporters after a walkabout for the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Week here. Under the new law, Nga said offenders will assist municipal workers in sanitation activity such as road sweeping, drainage cleaning and toilet washing for a period of 12 hours as part of their community service order. A check on the Malaysian Parliament website showed that both the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Bill (Amendment) 2025 and the Street, Drainage and Building Bill (Amendment) 2025 are scheduled for First Reading on July 21. In February, the ministry had announced its plan to implement a community service order of up to 12 hours for minor littering offences through amendments to the relevant acts. Through these amendments, failure to comply with the community service order may result in a fine ranging from RM2,000 to RM10,000. The ministry said the proposed measure aims to educate the public on the importance of cleanliness and discourage the irresponsible disposal of small waste in public areas.

320 households in Rejang Park receive reimbursement for septic tank self-installation
(From sixth right, back row) Tiang and Ting take a group photo with recipients. – Photo by Peter Boon SIBU (July 20): A total of RM960,000 was disbursed to 320 households in Rejang Park here, with each receiving RM3,000 as reimbursement for the self-installation of septic tanks. State Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang presented the cheques to the recipients at the Rejang Park commercial centre here yesterday, and he thanked Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for approving the reimbursement. 'This was my proposal, and he approved it. We are really thankful to our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,' Tiang told reporters. In recounting the timeline leading up to today's event, the Pelawan assemblyman referred back to 2015 when he was approached by the public regarding the long-standing issues with septic tanks. He recalled that at the time, the residential homes in Rejang Park and the commercial district were linked by an underground central sewage system. He said the centralised system built in the 1970s had somehow begun to fall apart, impacting toilets of the affected house owners and leading to extremely poor hygiene conditions. 'Consequently, they reached out to me to see if I could help. We conducted surveys of houses, gathering data, taking photographs, and even collecting petitions from the residents. This information was then submitted to the then Chief Minister, (the late) Tok Nan (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem). 'In 2018, our Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, visited Sibu for the general election. During his visit, I discussed this project with him, explaining that we needed RM3 million to address 345 houses and 32 commercial lots. He agreed, recognizing the urgency of the situation, and said this was something we had to do immediately,' he said. Tiang said that however, the onset of Covid-19 pandemic affected the progress of the project. He appreciated the efforts of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in assisting with the project. 'We completed the project. But then, still many of the residents came to me and asked for assistance. I said, okay, let me try after I get elected, so that I have more right to ask for this from you. 'In 2021, I achieved that goal and was elected. Since then, I have remained committed to this mission. But it took me three years to find the right way to do this, to find this reimbursement subsidy. 'Last year, I once again reached out to our Premier. Thankfully, our Premier was gracious enough to approve it once more. This allowed me to provide a subsidy of RM3,000 to each (of the 320) household (in Rejang Park). 'This morning, we managed to cover 320 homes. After a decade-long journey, I can say with gratitude that this chapter is now complete. Mission accomplished, and all thanks to our Premier.' Tiang added: 'He (Abang Johari) genuinely cares about the issues people face, even at this level. I'm thrilled about this transformative project that has significantly improved the residents' quality of life here. 'It has established a very clean and supportive commercial setting for all the businesspeople in this area. I'm truly delighted,' he said. Also present was SMC Market and Petty Traders standing committee chairwoman Jenny Ting. lead Michael Tiang reimbursement Rejang Park septic tank
