‘Agi idup, agi ngelaban': Honouring activist's death, Nurul Izzah urges protection of Sarawak indigenous land

Malay Mail2 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 – PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar has today called for stronger protection of Indigenous land rights in Sarawak following the passing of long-time activist Dennis — which she called a key figure in the fight for Native Customary Rights (NCR).
In a statement, Nurul Izzah paid tribute to Dennis' contributions and urged Malaysians to continue advocating for the indigenous Orang Asal communities in the state, many of whom face ongoing threats from land encroachment and displacement.
'Agi idup, agi ngelaban – as long as there is life, the fight continues,' the daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said, referencing the rallying cry of Sarawak's Orang Asal rights movement.
She recalled her first visits to remote villages in Sarawak, where she learnt how the Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, and Penan communities see land as their livelihood, a space for worship, and where traditions are upheld and families raised.
She said Dennis' lifelong struggle, along with the efforts of other figures such as Harrison Ngau and the late Bill Kayong, exemplified unwavering courage and resilience in defending ancestral land and heritage.
'Although the nation's laws and the Sarawak Land Code recognise NCR rights, the reality is that only a fraction of these lands have been officially surveyed and granted ownership,' she said.
Nurul Izzah highlighted that many Indigenous communities still face encroachment, forced evictions and exploitation as a result of land being leased to corporations without proper consultation or compensation.
'Palm oil plantations and logging activities continue to expand at the expense of Orang Asal sacrifice,' she said.
She noted that courts have repeatedly affirmed NCR rights as consistent with customary law, the Federal Constitution and international human rights norms, but said enforcement remains inconsistent.
'I urge that the process of surveying and issuing titles for NCR land be expedited, and that no new licences be issued for lands still under dispute,' she said.
She stressed that any development must obtain the free, prior and informed consent of original landowners and that affected communities must be fairly compensated.
Nurul Izzah concluded her statement with a call for national solidarity, urging Malaysians to stand with Sarawak's Orang Asal peoples to ensure their voices are heard and their rights safeguarded.

Police to probe scuffle between cop, protester at anti-graft rally

A scuffle between a policeman and a protester, at an anti-corruption rally in central Kuala Lumpur today, shown in a video posted by X user @lancelot_se. PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating a scuffle which broke out between a cop on duty and a protester at an anti-corruption rally attended by about 100 people in Kuala Lumpur earlier today. Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said one of the rally-goers had lit a flare at about 4.30pm, producing thick smoke which could have endangered participants, security personnel on duty and members of the public nearby. Because of this, policemen on duty took preventive action, he said. 'As this preventive action was being taken, a scuffle broke out between the rally-goer and a policeman, leaving the latter with minor injuries. The scuffle was broken up by other policemen. Three reports were later lodged over the incident,' he said in a statement. Sulizmie said the investigation was into the use of criminal force against a public servant, the letting off of fireworks, and insulting behaviour. Around 100 protesters gathered outside the Sogo shopping complex at about 2pm today before moving to Dataran Merdeka through Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They urged Putrajaya to strengthen the legal system and reinforce the independence of anti-corruption institutions.

Rep: Two new state constituencies needed if Baram undergoes redelineation

Dennis (front, sixth right) leads others in the cake-cutting ceremony. MIRI (June 28): Two new state constituencies (DUNs) will be needed to complement the proposed creation of two parliamentary seats in Baram, should a redelineation exercise take place, said Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau. He believes that the current Baram parliamentary constituency may be split into two, Upper Baram and Lower Baram. 'I don't know which part of Telang Usan will be carved out to form the new DUN, but perhaps we will find out during the special DUN sitting on July 7,' he said during the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Telang Usan Women's Wing Mother's Day and Father's Day dinner on Friday. Dennis added that the existing Telang Usan, Mulu and Marudi state constituencies might be affected by the creation of a new DUN within the Baram parliamentary area – if this were to happen. 'It could involve taking small parts from each: some from Mulu, some from Telang Usan, and some from Marudi. 'However, I don't know the exact location. I've never been involved in any meetings discussing the proposed new DUN,' he confirmed. Dennis disclosed that a total of 17 new DUNs and nine new parliamentary seats had been proposed, noting that the matter would be debated before being submitted to the federal government. Moreover, Dennis also announced that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas would be invited to witness first-hand the condition of the logging road from Baram to the Bario Highlands via a convoy scheduled for next week. 'The three-day convoy, which I will also be joining, will depart from Miri this July 1. 'YB Datuk Amar Douglas and the rest of the entourage will travel upriver from Miri to Bario using the Baram road, to see with our own eyes the condition of our road. 'We are thankful to him for taking the time to spend three days with us on this journey,' he added. Dennis also hailed the dinner as a platform to strengthen the bond and camaraderie among PBB members in Telang Usan and fellow members of the component parties within Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). 'To date, some 2,900 residents of Telang Usan are involved in the PBB, making it the largest political organisation in the area,' he noted. Baram Dennis Ngau redelineation

Decision to review 13MP not made in haste, says Fahmi

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the prime minister had asked all ministries to study the draft of the 13MP and submit their feedback to the economy ministry. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : The government's decision to review the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) is not a hasty reaction, but one that has gone through a discussion process over the past two weeks, said communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said the discussions began with a draft presented by the economy ministry's secretary-general to the Cabinet. 'We've actually discussed this. I mentioned (previously) that the prime minister had issued a directive to review the draft presented by the economy ministry's secretary-general. 'Any policy, programme or decision must first be presented at a Cabinet meeting. So, on Friday last week (June 20), the prime minister requested all ministries to study the draft and submit their feedback to the economy ministry,' the government spokesman said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda programme organised by the community communications department (J-Kom) here today. Following that, he said, a special Cabinet meeting was held last Monday to review the feedback from the ministries. 'During the meeting, it was found that many matters raised by the ministries needed to be considered by the economy ministry in drawing up the 13MP document. 'That was one of the reasons why, at last Wednesday's Cabinet meeting – the latest one – it was decided that finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan would take on the duties and functions of the economy minister,' he said. Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli was reported to have questioned the government's move to review the 13MP, calling it a hasty response to social media criticism. This followed chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar's announcement yesterday that Amir had been tasked with 'reviewing and revamping' the 13MP, while concurrently performing the duties and functions of the economy minister, effective immediately. The 13MP is scheduled to be tabled in Parliament on July 31.
