Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the programme also marked a successful effort in making entrepreneurship a movement to eradicate poverty. 'The programme receives an overwhelming response from the people of Sabah, especially from the east coast. The various activities and services offered successfully attracted 150,000 visitors as of 11 am today. 'Over two days, sales amounting to nearly RM1 million were recorded through the Jualan Murah Madani Sale, the One District One Industry (SDSI) sales and food truck sales. Additionally, RM3.4 million was channelled into entrepreneur financing and RM365,000 was recorded under the Business Matching initiative,' he said in a statement today. According to Ewon, the event featured 36 booths from ministries, government agencies and private sector participants offering 242 touchpoint services, as well as 158 Madani sales entrepreneurs, security asset exhibitions, a career carnival, seven satellite programmes and 63 engagement sessions. He said the success of Sabah PMR 2025 was the result of strategic cooperation between the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (Kuskop) as the lead ministry, the Sabah government and the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU) of the Prime Minister's Department. He added that during the programme, five entrepreneurs from the B40 group were also presented with the Sabah Entrepreneur Excellence Award by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 'These are 'zero to hero' entrepreneurs who received guidance from government agencies and have successfully created job opportunities for the local community,' he said. He added that Kuskop extends its appreciation to all quarters across all ministries and agencies, private companies, entrepreneurs, and especially the people of Sabah for their strong support and participation in the programme. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Explain why US tariff talks failed, MP urges government
Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the 25% tariff meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations for talks with the US had gone to waste. PETALING JAYA: An opposition MP has urged the government to explain why tariff negotiations with the US failed, following the imposition of a 25% rate on Malaysian goods effective Aug 1. In a Facebook post, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan said the investment, trade and industry ministry's (Miti) goal of talks with Washington would naturally have been to lower the tariff rate. However, the 25% rate announced by US president Donald Trump today was higher than the 24% originally imposed. 'This clearly shows that the government has failed to fulfil the hopes of the rakyat in the matter of US tariffs. And it clearly shows the relevant minister's failure to defend the nation's interests,' he said in a jab at Miti minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz. The Bersatu Supreme Council member also said the development meant that the funds used to send Malaysian delegations for trade talks with the US had gone to waste. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Trump said the 25% tariff on Malaysian goods was 'far less' than what was needed to eliminate the country's trade deficit with Malaysia. The US president added that any attempt to reroute goods through other countries to avoid higher tariffs would be penalised by the application of higher rates. Miti has said it will continue discussions with its US counterparts, and that it remains committed to engaging the US on a 'balanced' and 'mutually beneficial' trade agreement. Miti deputy secretary-general (trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa led the tariff negotiations with Washington from May 28 to May 30. Tengku Zafrul then led a delegation last month and said discussions with the US trade representative and secretary of commerce on tariff-related negotiations had made good progress. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MCCC Sabah supports SST amendment to boost business clarity and confidence
Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah has welcomed the state government's move to amend the State Sales Tax (SST) Ordinance, calling it a step toward clearer taxation, fairer enforcement, and stronger investor confidence. MCCC Sabah Women Entrepreneurs Committee Vice Chairperson Yong Hui Sun said the amendment will help eliminate legal ambiguities, lower compliance risks, and strengthen appeal mechanisms particularly benefiting SMEs and women entrepreneurs. She praised State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi's focus on removing "grey areas" in the law, noting that unclear regulations raise costs and undermine trust. Yong also urged the government to provide training for enforcement officers and hold more dialogues with businesses to ensure consistent and effective implementation. "MCCC views the amendment as a sign the government is open to business feedback and committed to creating a transparent, investment-friendly environment," she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
