Yayasan Sabah extends 30 pc Madani Loan Rebate to September
Published on: Mon, Jun 30, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Yayasan Sabah Group has extended its 30 percent Madani Loan Rebate Programme until 30 September 2025, following strong public response. The initiative, launched on 1 April, allows borrowers who fully settle their education loans to enjoy the rebate on their outstanding balance. As of 20 June, 96 borrowers have benefited, with RM232,817 in rebates issued and RM651,680 collected in lump-sum repayments. 'This programme eases borrowers' financial burden while supporting the sustainability of our education fund,' said Director Dato' Sri Haji Gulamhaidar Khan Bahadar, urging eligible borrowers to act. To encourage participation, Yayasan Sabah is also offering lucky draw prizes, including a luxury stay at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. In addition, enhancements to the Education Loan Repayment Portal will roll out in August, allowing users to manage deferments, rescheduling, salary deductions, and more. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump criticized Japan's reluctance to accept imports of US rice, as well as the imbalance in auto trade between the two countries. 'I'm not sure we're going to make a deal,' Trump said. 'I doubt it with Japan, they're very tough.' While Trump imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on imports from most trading partners in April, he unveiled -- then paused -- higher rates on dozens of economies to allow room for negotiations. This pause expires July 9, meaning the elevated rates are due to kick in next week if countries fail to reach agreements with Washington to avert them. To date, only two pacts have been announced. One was a broad framework with Britain and the other a deal to temporarily lower steep tit-for-tat duties with China. Trump said he was going to write a letter to Japan, asking them to 'pay a 30 percent, 35 percent or whatever the number is that we determine' because of the 'big trade deficit' with Tokyo. 'It's very unfair to the American people,' he said. Japan, a key US ally and its biggest investor, is subject to the same 10 percent baseline tariffs imposed on most nations plus steeper levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Ryosei Akazawa, Tokyo's trade envoy, told Japanese reporters in Washington last month that some progress had been made during a fifth round of talks with the United States. Sabah creatives left out of Borneo.TV planning: Safva

Sabah Film and Visual Association (Safva) President Chester Pang ( pic ) welcomed the initiative but said the lack of prior engagement with key industry stakeholders was disappointing. He said this absence of consultation risked sidelining experienced local content creators and undermining long-standing efforts toward a transparent and inclusive creative ecosystem in Sabah. In an open letter to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Pang requested clarity on policies for local producers, content selection guidelines, and official channels for communication with the industry. Safva, which represents Sabah at the national level through the Malaysian Film Association Coalition (Gafema), has worked with agencies such as Finas and RTM to promote the State's creative sector. Pang said Safva remained committed to supporting Sabah's digital creative development and stood ready to collaborate on future content initiatives. Businessman fined RM300,000 over claims for non-existent Perkeso courses

Kuala Lumpur: A businessman was fined RM300,000 by the sessions court here today after pleading guilty to cheating the Social Security Organisation (Socso) of nearly RM500,000 in incentive payments for courses that were never conducted. The claims were made under the Penjana Kerjaya 1.0 and 2.0 programmes between 2020 and 2021. Judge Suzana Hussin meted out the sentence on P Sathia Seelan, 52, the owner of Global Education Network Sdn Bhd (GENSB), after he pleaded guilty to 10 alternative charges read out to him in court. The court also ordered him to serve 10 months in jail if he failed to pay the fine. According to the charges, Sathia deceived two Socso officers by submitting documents containing attendance lists and participant signatures for training courses that were never held. The offences took place at the Socso office in Putrajaya between Dec 23, 2020 and Aug 12, 2021. His actions led Socso to pay RM496,000 to GENSB, payments the agency would not have made had it not been misled. The charges were framed under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail, a fine or both. In the same proceedings, Sathia's accomplice, R Nanthagopal, 43, was also fined RM300,000 or 10 months' imprisonment in default, after pleading guilty to abetting him in committing the offences at the same time and place. Nanthagopal was charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 109, which provides the same punishment.
