NDA MPs walk out protesting Medha Patkar's presence at meet of House panel on rural development
The committee was meeting officials from Rural Development, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, along with 10 other experts from civil society, including actor Prakash Raj. It was reviewing the implementation of 'Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013'.
The protests began soon after Mr. Ulaka read out the list of witnesses. The NDA MPs described the activist, who led the Narmada Bachao Andolan in Gujarat and elsewhere, as 'anti-national and anti-development' and should not be allowed to present her views. A ruling party MP, according to sources, even asked whether the panel will next be calling the Pakistan Prime Minister.
There were eight NDA MPs and seven opposition MPs. When Mr. Ulaka and other opposition members were of the view that the meeting should be continued, and since witnesses are already here, they must be heard. At this point, the NDA MPs staged a walkout. Even as the remaining members were deliberating on what to do next, the Speaker's office sent a message that since the panel does not have a quorum the meeting should be ended.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Ulaka said due procedure was followed and the list of witnesses was circulated in advance to all the members. If they had objections, they should have raised it before the meeting. The Speaker's office too was informed about the witnesses as part of the usual procedure. 'It is unfortunate that NDA members did not want to even listen to them. The standing committee reports are not binding on the government. And neither can the chairman force a report. The standing committees provide a platform to hear everyone. Stalling such interactions can be grievous to democracy,' he said.

Telangana would continuously pursue with Centre to safeguard its water rights: CM
Claiming that the river-linking project hurts Telangana's share of water in the Godavari river, the Telangana government had earlier urged the Centre to reject the PFR. Speaking at a power-point presentation made to ruling Congress MLAs, and other leaders on the Godavari-Banakacharla river-linking proposed by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, he said the Union Environment Ministry reportedly rejecting the pre-feasibility report (PFR) of the project submitted by the Andhra government is not a permanent solution for Telangana. Hyderabad, Jul 1 (PTI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday said the state government would consistently pursue and 'mount pressure' on the Centre to safeguard its rights in river waters, even as he alleged that the BJP is indirectly trying to revive the BRS to marginalise the Congress. 'Don't think the rejection of PFR is any solution (for Telangana). It's not a full stop (to the issue), it's only a comma,' Reddy said. Telangana's interests would be protected only when its share of water is decided and allocations of water are made, he said. He also alleged that the Centre is not addressing the river water-sharing issues. It was the previous BRS government and former CM K Chandrasekhar Rao who caused the problem of Andhra proposing the river-linking project as the latter had said that 3,000 TMC of Godavari water is draining into the sea every year, he alleged. The BRS, after losing power, is now trying to gain political mileage by alleging that the Congress government is silent on Andhra's river-linking project, Reddy said. 'We have to continuously put pressure on the Centre to ensure our rights and water allocations. That's our agenda. The BRS is a dead snake. 'The BJP has been negligent over our water allocations. The BJP is indirectly trying to revive KCR. Union Minister Kishan Reddy is playing a major role in this,' he said. PTI SJR MNK MNK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. NSA slapped on absconding Congress councillor in Indore in ‘love jihad funding' case
Eighteen criminal cases are registered against Qadri in different police stations of the city, officials said. District Magistrate Ashish Singh has issued an order to arrest Congress councillor Anwar Qadri alias Dacoit under the NSA with the aim of maintaining public peace and law and order, he said. Indore, Jul 1 (PTI) The Indore district administration in Madhya Pradesh has issued an arrest order under the stringent National Security Act against a Congress councillor absconding in a case of indulging in a conspiracy to carry out religious conversion through monetary considerations, an official said on Tuesday. One of these cases was registered last month, in which the Congress councillor is accused of being involved in a conspiracy to convert people with the power of money. Officials said that a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) has also announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for the arrest of Qadri in this case. A police official said that two men in the city – Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Shah – had allegedly admitted during their police interrogation that Qadri had given them a total of Rs 3 lakh to convert girls by luring them into love traps and that they had spent this amount on the girls. Sheikh and Shah were arrested in separate cases on the charges of raping two girls and other charges. Based on the statements given by both of them, a case was registered against Qadri for his involvement in a conspiracy to convert people through money. After this case was registered, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had accused the Congress councillor of operating a 'love jihad' gang and demanded his arrest under the NSA. The term 'love jihad' is used by right-wing organisations to allege a concerted effort by Muslim men to convert Hindu women to Islam. Patole climbs onto Speaker's podium, suspended for a day
Mumbai: Congress' Nana Patole was suspended from the state assembly on Tuesday for a day after he climbed onto the podium of Speaker Rahul Narwekar and approached his desk to protest against the alleged anti-farmer remarks made by agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate and BJP MLA Babanrao Lonikar. The opposition boycotted the proceedings of the House for the rest of the day. Significantly, Patole has earlier served as Speaker of the state assembly. On Tuesday, Patole spoke out in the assembly against the alleged anti-farmer remarks and demanded an apology from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. "Farmers in the state will not tolerate the insulting statements from Kokate and Lonikar. Fadnavis should apologise to the farmers. Prime Minister Modi may be your father but cannot be the father of farmers," Patole said. As MLAs from the ruling party and the opposition shouted slogans against each other, Narwekar adjourned the assembly for five minutes. When the assembly reconvened and the protests continued, Fadnavis rose to demand that Patole apologise to Narwekar. "Voicing feelings is one thing, but rushing towards the Speaker is totally inappropriate. We are seeing this for the first time. Patole has been Speaker himself. He should apologise," he said. However, Patole once again approached Narwekar's desk and continued to raise slogans. Narwekar then announced his suspension for a day. Lonikar had recently told farmers in Jalna district that "people who criticise our party and government should know they are getting clothes, shoes, mobile phones and monetary benefits of schemes because of us." Kokate, who belongs to the NCP, had claimed that farmers spent the money received from loan waivers on weddings. "One rupee is something even beggars don't accept but the government is giving crop insurance for that sum. This is being misused by some," he had said. Later, while addressing a press conference, Patole said, "I will raise my voice for farmers even if I am suspended daily."
