Why Does Needing People Feel So Uncomfortable?
There's a certain kind of person who takes pride in handling everything on their own. They never ask for help, rarely show vulnerability, and wear it like a badge of honor. It looks like maturity. It sounds like strength but after all, in a world that can be unreliable, learning to depend on no one can feel like the safest option. But when relying on others becomes completely off-limits, it starts to do more harm than good.
Hyper-independence often hides behind the illusion of being 'fine.' It shows up in overworking, people-pleasing, pushing through, and saying 'Don't worry, I've got it' even when everything's falling apart and the truth is, it doesn't always come from confidence. It often comes from pain.
Many psychologists and studies have pointed out that hyper-independence is commonly a trauma response, a defense mechanism developed after repeated disappointment, betrayal, or neglect. For some, it's the result of being let down too many times, by parents, by friends, by people who should've been there but weren't.
So the solution becomes isolation masked as control: never ask, never expect, never need but eventually, the cost adds up. It creates emotional distance. It turns relationships into surface-level check-ins. It makes friends feel useless, partners feel shut out, and loved ones feel like outsiders. At work, it shows up as burnout, taking on everything just to avoid sharing responsibility. And when things fall apart, there's no one to turn to, because no one was allowed in to begin with.
Do you want to know the uncomfortable truth? No one survives alone. Not emotionally, not practically, not long-term. Hyper-independency might feel safe, but all it really builds is a lonely kind of silence. And if you think about it, it doesn't have to stay that way. Do you agree?

Abandoned Hall in Ain Shams University Revived With Metal Drape
A parametric aluminum system and glass curtain wall recast Ain Shams University's retired lecture hall into a hybrid theatre, integrating material performance with adaptive reuse. Jun 27, 2025 At Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, a long-disused lecture hall has been reimagined rather than demolished. Spearheaded by Prof. Dr. Gamal El-Kholy in collaboration with El Maghraby Design House, the transformation preserves the building's core while introducing new functions: a fully equipped theatre and two-tiered lecture halls. The intervention extends the structure's lifecycle by giving it renewed cultural and academic relevance. A defining feature of the redesign is its layered façade. A reflective glass curtain wall is overlaid with a system of parametric aluminium louvers, which reference the folds of a stage curtain. More than just a visual metaphor, the louvers modulate light and help reduce solar gain. 'The louvers were designed to create rhythm across the façade, changing the building's expression throughout the day,' says architect Ahmed El Maghraby. While the building asserts itself as a new landmark on campus, its mirrored curtain wall reflects the surrounding architecture, anchoring it within its context. The sculptural aluminium screen, meanwhile, signals the structure's cultural function. 'The goal was to create a building that both blends in and stands out - a symbol of change rooted in memory,' El Maghraby explains. Inside, the design reflects a dual purpose. The theatre supports both stage productions and lecture-format events, while the two lecture halls accommodate a total of 1,200 students. This combination of uses allows the space to operate as both a site of learning and cultural engagement. The project underscores a broader shift in institutional design - one that favours adaptive reuse over replacement, and sustainability over spectacle. The Ain Shams University Theatre stands as a case study in how architecture can evolve with its community's needs while maintaining a dialogue with its past.
