Yogi govt prioritises safety, deploys 10,000 women cops for Kanwar Yatra

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh govt, under Chief Minister
Yogi Adityanath
's leadership, has prioritised women's safety in its arrangements for the Kanwar Yatra. In a first, over 10,000 women police personnel, including 8,541 head constables and 1,486 sub-inspectors, have been deployed along the route, forming nearly 15% of the total force on the direction of CM Yogi.
In a recent high-level review meeting, officials informed the CM that around 6 crore devotees, including an estimated 60–70 lakh women, are expected to take part in the yatra. In response, CM Yogi directed the implementation of a women-centric security model.
As part of this model, female constables have been stationed at all women's help desks to assist and counsel devotees in sensitive situations. Additionally, Shakti Help Booths, in collaboration with women's voluntary organisations, are being set up in several districts to support women pilgrims.
Women police personnel have also been made a mandatory part of quick response teams (QRTs), including night shifts, to ensure immediate support in emergencies. QRT patrolling has been intensified along key routes, and female officers are now monitoring special 24x7 control rooms and helplines across 11 zones.
Meerut zone, a key area for Kanwar Yatra, has witnessed the highest deployment, with 3,200 women police personnel positioned across districts like Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Hapur, and Ghaziabad.

To boost security, the authorities are leveraging technology, including drones, CCTVs, and social media monitoring. Additionally, over 150 help desks have been set up specifically for women, providing them with real-time assistance and support during the Kanwar Yatra.
"The Yogi govt's initiative reflects its commitment to creating an environment where women can participate in religious and cultural events freely and fearlessly," said a govt spokesperson.

'The cyber experts are being empanelled under the IT Act while batch of six trained cyber experts including an IPS are already on job as experts. This is a continuous process and appointments will be done.' Munat cited figures indicating Rs 107 crore had been siphoned off through cyber fraud in the state, of which only about Rs 3 crore had been recovered. He demanded the appointment of a senior officer to oversee the situation. Sharma responded that recovery of funds is subject to court procedures and that an IG-level officer has already been appointed for cybercrime. In response to a query on arrests made between January 2024 and June 2025, Sharma said three bank-related fraud cases had led to the imprisonment of seven accused, from Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur. While the cybercrime debate dominated the session, Opposition Congress also raised the issue of completion of work and payments under PM Awas Yojana and MNREGA. Leader of Opposition Dr Charan Das Mahant questioned the state's handling of PM housing benefits, especially in cases where houses were allegedly marked complete despite missing toilets. He asked if the completion is considered and payments were done only upon construction of house, or MNREGA work or building of toilets. Deputy CM Vijay Sharma defended by attributing past delays to the previous government and claimed that under CM Vishnu Deo Sai, all pending payments had been cleared right from year 2011. In further exchanges, Mahant raised concerns about fund delays in MNREGA, citing specific districts like Jashpur and Bijapur. Sharma responded that all labour payments were made by June 30, but agreed to verify any discrepancies if provided with documentation, mainly in interior regions of Bijapur, where bank accounts might not be functional. Mahant reacted stating that he has got complaints about completed houses under PMAY, the payments were which were stalled by claiming they were incomplete and they were trying to 'fool' the govt. Sharma replied that Mahant's comment was very hurtful to him while he's ready with all the documents that shows how Congress delayed the PMAY construction despite approval from the Centre. This was followed by noisy scenes as opposition members objected Sharma's reply. Assembly Speaker Raman Singh then said the word 'bewakoof' was abolished and it should not be used any further in the House.

On Tuesday, Trump announced an agreement with Indonesia that reduces the tariff rate from 32% - threatened in the tariff letter - to 19%. 'We made a deal with Indonesia. Contempt case: HC sends man to jail for three days
Kochi: High court on Wednesday sentenced P K Suresh Kumar of Alangad, Ernakulam, to undergo simple imprisonment for three days and to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 in a criminal contempt case relating to derogatory and scandalous remarks made against HC judges through social media. A bench of Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and Jobin Sebastian passed the order in a suo motu criminal contempt proceedings initiated against Kumar over a series of Facebook posts. The contemnor had previously been discharged in another suo motu contempt case after tendering an unconditional apology for similar conduct. However, shortly thereafter, he resumed posting contemptuous material from the same social media account. HC noted that Kumar, in his posts, alleged that judges on the devaswom bench were functioning under the influence of the 'Sangh Parivar' and external agencies, rendering judgments to appease such factions. In another post he alleged that a judge had publicly endorsed the Sangh Parivar to secure personal benefits. Rejecting this defence, the court observed that while fair and temperate criticism of judgments is permissible, comments based on distortion and aimed at vilifying the judiciary cannot be countenanced. The bench held that the posts, taken as a whole, were intended to undermine public confidence in the independence and integrity of the judiciary. The insinuation that judgments were rendered to secure personal advancement or at the behest of politically aligned advocates amounts to an allegation of judicial dishonesty, HC said. After finding Kumar guilty of contempt, the court considered his plea for leniency, citing his family responsibilities. Accordingly, he was sentenced to three days' simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000, payable to the secretary, Kerala State Legal Services Authority. Following the pronouncement of the sentence, Kumar requested a day's suspension of the sentence, but the bench declined the plea.
