‘Anomaly corrected': Priyanka Chaturvedi reacts to ban on ‘vulgar' OTT platforms
Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray's faction) Member of Parliament Priyanka Chaturvedi reacted to the Centre's ban on several OTT platforms for allegedly showing obscene, vulgar, and 'pornographic' content and said that an anomaly has been corrected. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi was one of the leaders who spearheaded criticism against 'vulgar' content on OTT platforms earlier this year.(PTI) Quoting her months old post on X bashing such content and demanding action against it, she wrote, 'This. Done, anomaly corrected.' Also read: Government bans ULLU, ALTBalaji, 23 other OTT platforms over obscene, 'pornographic' content In the post that she quoted, dating back to May 1, she had written, 'I have raised this in the standing committee that apps such as this, namely, Ullu App and Alt Balaji have managed to escape the ban by I&B ministry on apps for obscene content. I am still awaiting their reply.' The caption accompanied a video from a show on ULLU streaming platform called 'House Arrest', hosted by Ajaz Khan. The clip, which went viral and sparked widespread criticism, shows Khan asking contestants to show sex positions on camera. Also read: Full list of 25 OTT platforms banned by Indian govt over 'pornographic' content In a follow up post on X, Chaturvedi wrote, 'This is great news. Had been talking about these two apps -Ullu and Alt Balaji in particular for their content, had raised it in the standing committee of Communication and IT. Glad @GoI_MeitY paid heed & did what was needed to be done long time ago!' Chaturvedi was one of the leaders who spearheaded criticism against that show and other such 'vulgar' content on OTT platforms. The show was taken down from the platform in May. Also: How OTT platforms skirted warnings against 'pornographic' content; now ALTT, Ullu, Hulchul among 25 banned Centre bans ULLU, ALTBalaji The Centre has taken strict action against apps and websites allegedly showing vulgar and 'pornographic' content. As many as 25 apps and websites have been banned, including ALTBalaji, ULLU, Big Shots App, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, and Gulab App, official sources said. According to sources in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the government has ordered the blocking of websites and applications associated with 25 OTT platforms over allegations that these platforms were hosting content deemed 'obscene,' 'vulgar,' and, in some instances, 'pornographic.' They added that the action was taken after the content was found to be in "serious violation" of laws in India. The action comes after the OTT platforms apparently ignored or circumvented warnings issued months ago. Sources in the broadcasting ministry said, 'While the platform removes or edits the web series for a temporary period, it either re-uploads or publishes the unedited version after a certain period, thereby attempting to circumvent the warnings.'

Payal Kapadia: ‘Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan is a moment in Indian cinema'
When Neeraj Ghaywan-directed Masaan created a buzz by winning two awards — FIPRESCI award and the Promising Future prize in the Un Certain Regard section — at the Cannes Film Festival, 2015, director Payal Kapadia, then a student of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, candidly recalls her initial reaction to the film's success, marked by what she termed 'film school arrogance' and skepticism. 'Is Masaan really that good? We wondered. However, after watching it, I was moved by the way Masaan talked about caste and gender. Masaan is a moment in Indian cinema,' she said. Kapadia, the writer-director of Cannes-winner All We Imagine As Light (2024), was in conversation with Ghaywan after a special screening organised by Versova Homage Screenings (VHS) on Thursday evening as Masaan turns 10. Talking about Masaan's significance in Indian cinema, she said: 'It is not often that you see characters in Hindi cinema that (give the impression) we might have met them at some point or capture feelings that we must have experienced at some point in our lives. That's why Masaan is both universal and specific to a particular place. There are so many themes in the film. As cinema students, we were inspired by how this film had used a unique cinematic language — long takes and off-screen sound — in the mainstream space.' A compelling exploration of themes of love, loss, caste, guilt, and ambition, Masaan parallelly follows the stories of its lead characters — Devi (essayed by Richa Chadha) and Deepak (Vicky Kaushal). Ghaywan's initial idea was to explore the story of a man who works at a ghat and can't muster enough courage to speak to a woman he is drawn to. 'Later on, I developed a couple of other tracks. The concept of two people, who were slowly navigating towards each other, completely oblivious of their journeys ending together, was always there.' says Ghaywan. The special screening of Masaan was organised by Versova Homage Screenings (VHS), a community viewing platform created by two brothers, writer-director Rohan K Mehta and actor Prayrak Mehta. They started VHS in April 2024 with the screening of Avinash Arun-directed Killa (2014) and this was their 25th screening. For Payal Kapadia, one of the powerful scenes of Masaan is the ending, when Devi and Deepak meet at a ghat in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) and go on a boat tour of Sangam, which is the confluence of rivers: the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. 'The ending is powerful. It is about two people who don't know each other and have impacted each other. It goes so well with the metaphor of Sangam of the rivers,' she said. In response, Ghaywan said he always wants to end a story with hope. 'That was also the last shot that we took as the sun was about to set.' Masaan, which boasts of an impressive ensemble cast, features Shweta Tripathi, Sanjay Mishra and Pankaj Tripathi. When Kapadia mentioned how 'its characters are complex', Ghaywan said, 'I don't like unidimensional characters who are honest and sincere. As humans, we are flawed.' Ghaywan's second feature Homebound premiered at Cannes Film Festival's 'Un Certain Regard' section and will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. Also Read | Vicky Kaushal was ridiculed after he was cast as lead in Masaan, says casting director Mukesh Chhabra: 'Kisko hero le liya' Even though a decade has passed since its release, Masaan still stands out for its magnificent use of music and Hindi poetry. 'For Masaan, I wanted a different kind of music. The inspiration was Udaan, which used rock music in a coming-of-age film so beautifully,' he said. The songs of Masaan were composed by Indian Ocean and the lyrics were written by Varun Grover, who also wrote its screenplay. The script deftly weaves references to Urdu & Hindi poets such as Akbar Allahabadi, Basheer Badr, Mirza Ghalib, Dushyant Kumar and Nida Fazli.

Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez's Kick celebrates 11 years of its release today. On social media, fans have been hailing the electrifying chemistry between Salman and Jacqueline and the film's emotional core. Amidst all the high-octane action and grand drama, it was the playful, heartfelt moments between Devi and Shaina that truly struck a chord with the audience. Jacqueline took to Instagram and reshared moments from the film featuring Salman. In one of the pictures, Jacqueline gently holds Salman's arm, marking a memorable still from the film. Another was a video of Bollywood's Bhaijaan dancing his heart out. Jacqueline shared the glimpses with multiple red heart emojis. His complete transformation into Shiv Gajra – and the way he made evil feel both terrifying and magnetic – cemented the character as one of Bollywood's most iconic villains. As the film marks its anniversary today, even 11 years later, fans continue to celebrate the performance that redefined villainy in Hindi cinema. Talking about the love he received and how the role impacted his journey as an actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui reflected with heartfelt gratitude. He said, 'Main bahut shukarguzar hoon for the love and appreciation that I had received for my role as Shiv Gajra. Yeh, ek aisa role tha jisne meri career mein ek naye rang bhar diya tha. It's a testament to how powerful cinema can be. Dil se shukriya sabko." What are some of the key scenes from Kick? In a film brimming with larger-than-life moments, one scene from Kick that quietly shines is when Devi (Salman) and Shaina (Jacqueline) ride a bullet cart to the temple. There's no dramatic confrontation – just playful glances, a breezy exchange, and an unspoken warmth that speaks louder than words. Another emotionally charged scene unfolds when Shaina unexpectedly crosses paths with Devi once more. But he's changed – aloof, distant, and pretending not to know her. Jacqueline's bewildered heartbreak, paired with Salman's cryptic smirk, gives the moment a bittersweet depth, layered with unspoken emotions, nostalgia, and unresolved love. In fact, their first meeting on the train, meanwhile, is pure rom-com magic. Salman's laid-back charisma meets Jacqueline's graceful sass, sparking a natural, witty chemistry that's instantly captivating. Directed by Sajid Nadiadwala, Kick featured Salman Khan as the thrill-seeking Devil, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the menacing Shiv Gajra, Randeep Hooda as a determined cop, and Jacqueline Fernandez. The film became a blockbuster, loved for its action and performances. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
