A court in Chittagong on Monday has shown arrested Hindu priest Chinmoy Krishna Das in four murder cases after the Bangladesh High Court granted bail in a sedition charge, lawyers said."A judge in Chittagong has shown arrested Chinmoy Krishna Das in four cases filed in connection with the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif", Ashraf Hossain Razzak, General Secretary of Chittagong Bar Association, told over the phone.On November 26, Saiful Islam Alif, a lawyer practicing at the Chittagong Court , was fatally attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants during a protest demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das.Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested by police at Dhaka Airport on November 25 last year on the charge of sedition.Earlier on Wednesday, the Bangladesh High Court granted bail to spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in a sedition case. A bench of Justice Atoar Rahman and Justice Md Ali Reza passed the order.Immediately after the bail order was issued, the state filed an application with the chamber court seeking a stay of the order. The chamber court did not stay but set a hearing date."In order to prevent Chinmoy Prabhu from being released, even after being granted bail by the High Court, he was shown arrested in Chittagong court", said Das's lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee."None of Chinmoy's lawyer were able to appear in the Chittagong court. The prosecution unilaterally did hearing", he said.Meanwhile, Chinmoy's lawyer Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee told ANI that the allegation was completely false against our leader, Chinmoy Krishna Das. Seven months ago, he was arrested on November 25, 2024."Chinmoy Krishna Das, spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sanatani Jagran Jote and a former ISKCON leader, has been accused of insulting the national flag of Bangladesh and is facing sedition charges."There is no specific allegation against him for flag dishonour. We argued with all documents in favour of him, and the court was satisfied and granted bail, and the rule was absolute. We are happy for this judgement," Bhattacharjee said."We hope he will be freed within a week from Chittagong Central Jail after the order reaching to the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate court", he added."The government is trying to stay in order," Bhattacharjee said."But there is no sign of his speech or motivation or anything against Chinmoy Prabhu of sedition. Still, after seven months, there is no police investigation report", he said.

New Delhi: Civil society group United Christian Forum has submitted a memorandum highlighting targeted attacks against the Christian community in India to the Vatican, the Hindu reported. The letter was given to Vatican foreign minister Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, who is on a week-long visit to India to meet with church officials in the country. The letter urged the Vatican minister to bring up rising crimes against the minority community during his talks with Indian officials. Gallagher held a meeting with Union external affairs minister S. Jaishankar last week. The Indian minister took to social media after the meeting on Thursday and said that he was pleased to meet the archbishop, adding that they had 'good conversation about the importance of faith, and the need for dialogue and diplomacy to address conflicts'. In January, UCF had released a report which stated that 2024 witnessed 834 hate crimes against Christians, up from 734 such incidents in 2023. In the Modi decade, such crimes had increased from 127 in 2014, the report further said. 'The alarming frequency of attacks translates to more than two Christians being targeted every day in India simply for practising their faith,' UCF had said. In their submission to Gallagher, UCF said that the 'primary reason for these attacks has been false allegations of fraudulent conversions'. According to the report, the highest number of incidents in 2024 were reported from Uttar Pradesh (209), followed by Chhattisgarh (165). In many of these cases, rights activists have pointed out, no First Information Report is filed – sometimes despite there being a police complaint on the matter. In other situations, victims are afraid to approach the police because they believe that the police will try to turn the matter around, and side with the perpetrators while filing false charges against the victims.

A viral video has triggered widespread outrage online after a man was seen eating chicken at an Iskcon-run vegetarian restaurant 'Govinda', despite clear instructions from the vendors that it was associated with a "temple". The footage, which could not be independently verified by the TOI, captured the chaotic scene as the man held out a half-eaten piece of chicken to stunned diners before erupting into a loud chant of 'Free the chicken!' The incident began with the man walking in and asking the shopkeeper, 'Is this a vegan restaurant?' The shopkeeper replied, 'Yeah.' Seeking further confirmation, the man pressed, 'So there's no meat, no nothing?' To which the staff reiterated, pointing to the sign board outside, 'No meat, no onion, no garlic.' The shopkeeper, attempting to clarify further, added, 'It's a temple,' referencing the restaurant's affiliation with Iskcon, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, which follows strict vegetarian dietary practices in line with its religious beliefs. However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when the man, in what appeared to be a performative protest, suddenly took out a KFC bucket and started having chicken, leaving the vendors shocked. He went on to offer the fried chicken to other staffs and visitors before erupting into a loud cry of 'Free the chicken!' "You are actually violating somebody's religion," a diner said. The netizens reacted to the video, with one user saying: "What should we call this? Racism or pure Hindu Hate?" Gaiety marks Bonalu celebrations in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The annual 'Bonalu' festival was celebrated in Hyderabad on Sunday in a traditional manner with thousands of devotees participating in the festivities. Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and state ministers were among prominent personalities who offered prayers at the Mahankali temples in the old city of Hyderabad. Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka and Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Vakati Srihari and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy offered silk robes to the deity on behalf of the state government at Simhavahini Mahankali temple at Lal Darwaza. The Deputy CM said they prayed for the development of the state and prosperity, and happiness for people. Former Haryana governor Bandaru Dattatreya, BJP MP K. Laxman, MLA D. Nagender, BRS MLC K. Kavitha, BJP leader Madhavi Latha, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) chairman B. R. Naidu, were among prominent personalities who offered prayers at Mahankali Temple Lal Darwaza, the historic Akkanna Madanna temple at Hari Bowli in Shah Ali Banda and other temples to the deity in different parts of the city. The festival dedicated to the Hindu goddess of power, Mahankali or Kali, is intended to ward off evil and usher in peace. Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy offered prayers at the Mahankali temple in Amberpet. Devotees, including a large number of women, queued up at the temples to offer Bonalu, which consists of cooked rice, jaggery, curd and turmeric water, carried in steel and clay pots on their heads. Declared as the state festival after the creation of Telangana state in 2014, Bonalu is being celebrated on a large scale with pomp and gaiety. Various government departments have made all necessary arrangements for the devotees visiting the temples, like drinking water, sanitation, roads and uninterrupted power supply. Police made elaborate security arrangements for the festival. About 1,200 policemen were deployed around the Lal Darwaza temple. The two-day festivities will conclude on Monday with 'Rangam', the oracle prediction at Akkanna Madanna temple, followed by a combined procession on a caparisoned elephant, carrying 'ghatam' of the goddess Mahankali. The procession will pass through the main thoroughfares of the old city, including historic Charminar, before reaching Delhi Darwaza Matha Temple near Musi River, where the ghatam will be immersed. Authorities ordered the closure of liquor shops, bars, restaurants and toddy outlets in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Commissionerates in view of the festival. Bonalu is celebrated in parts of Hyderabad and Secunderabad during the Ashadam month. Also known as Ashada Jatra Utsavalu, it is celebrated on four Sundays in different places in the twin cities. Last Sunday, it was celebrated in Secunderabad, where Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made the offering. It is believed that the festival was first celebrated over 150 years ago following a major cholera outbreak. People believed that the epidemic was due to the anger of Mahankali and began offering Bonalu to placate her.
