Cowboys' Trevon Diggs Trade, Cut or Hope Options Offered by Insider

Cowboys' Trevon Diggs Trade, Cut or Hope Options Offered by Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Dallas Cowboys have been burdened by injuries to key stars over the past several seasons, and one player the team is eagerly hoping to see return to full form is ball-hawking cornerback Trevon Diggs.

But there are some obstacles here.
Diggs' injury struggles began in 2023, when he suffered a torn ACL during a Week 3 practice, forcing him to undergo surgery and miss the remainder of the season. His return in 2024 initially looked promising, as he performed at a high level and showed flashes of his Pro Bowl form. But his comeback was cut short once again after Week 14, when a cartilage injury in the same knee sidelined him for the rest of the year.
In January 2025, Diggs underwent a chondral tissue graft procedure to repair the damaged cartilage in his left knee. The recovery timeline was and is significant.
CowboysCountry.com has reported that he will miss training camp and possibly the start of the regular season; Diggs himself has said he is targeting Week 1 as his comeback date.

Adding to the uncertainty, Diggs did not participate fully in the Cowboys' offseason program as he chose to continue some of his rehabbing in Miami, a decision that privately rankled some folks inside The Star, per our Mike Fisher.
Despite the absence, the Cowboys remain optimistic.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer recently provided an update, stating, 'It's going good. All signs are positive.'
Now, the key questions become: When will Trevon Diggs return? And what should the expectations be for his role in the Cowboys' defensive backfield in 2025?
A return for Week 1 against the Eagles? Maybe. However, he is currently listed on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues his recovery. If he remains on the list through the first regular-season game, he will be required to miss the first four games, making his earliest possible return Week 5 against the Jets on October 5.

Are there other options?
Our Cowboys insider Mike Fisher: 'The savings from cutting him (which changes next spring) don't outweigh the value of having him. A trade? Why would a team want to take him on now?
'That leaves one thing: Hope. That's it.'
When Trevon does return, some may expect him to carry most of the workload, but that might not be the case. Despite losing cornerback Jourdan Lewis to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the defensive backfield remains strong enough (if not yet deep enough with proven bodies).
DaRon Bland has emerged as a star over the past three seasons, earning a First Team All-Pro selection and setting an NFL record for most interceptions returned for a touchdown in a single season in 2023.

The Cowboys are expecting a few young players on the back end to step up and make an impact in 2025. Rookie Shavon Revel Jr., a third-round pick out of East Carolina, has generated some preseason buzz as a potential fill-in for Diggs during his absence. Meanwhile, Caelen Carson, entering his sophomore season, is looking to bounce back after a challenging rookie year. The coaching staff is expecting big improvements from him as he's also being relied upon to help stabilize the secondary.
While it remains uncertain whether Diggs will return before the season opener or sometime midseason, the two-time Pro Bowler is expected to play a significant role upon his return, not only as a major contributor on the field but also as a mentor to the younger talent in the Cowboys' defensive backfield.
And waiting for that is the best 'hope' Dallas has.

Brock Purdy still wishes the best for Trey Lance

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy was an afterthought when he was drafted with the final pick in 2022. It took injuries to Trey Lance Jimmy Garoppolo before he saw the field, and after that, Lance and Garoppolo became expendable. Lance, the third overall pick in 2021, lasted through training camp in 2023 before the Cowboys unwisely sent a fourth-round pick to the 49ers for him. 'It's tough, because Trey and I are tight, dude,' Purdy said during a recent appearance on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast, via David Bonilla of 'Absolutely, we're boys, and we're bros.' Purdy is firmly entrenched as the 49ers' franchise quarterback, having signed a five-year, $265 million extension with the team. Lance already is on his third team, having left the Cowboys to sign a one-year, $2 million deal with the Chargers to back up Justin Herbert. Lance's career has not gone how anyone expected. 'I wanted nothing but the best for him, and I know he wanted that for me,' Purdy said. 'But that's just how this business goes and all that. When it did happen, we're about to play our preseason game against the Chargers, and right before the game, they announced [the trade of Lance to the Cowboys], and I didn't really know how to act or what to think. I was just like, 'Man, I hope he can go to Dallas and compete and have a great opportunity.'' Purdy said he and Lance have never discussed exactly how everything went down, but nothing has changed about Purdy's feelings about Lance. 'We've just texted each other, like, 'Hey, dude, hope you're doing good,' like, randomly throughout the season, offseason, or whatever. 'Hope you're doing good,' this and that. It's really just been that,' Purdy said. 'We haven't really gotten to the details of, 'Hey, how do you feel with this happening?' or whatever. We just stay away from that.'

Is this Scott Satterfield's 'best team' with Cincinnati Bearcats in Big 12 era?

FRISCO, TX – They are no longer the new team in the conference hoping to crash the party. Two years after first appearing in Big 12 media days in Arlington, Texas at AT&T Stadium, the Cincinnati Bearcats football program descended upon Frisco and The Ford Center at The Star Tuesday, July 8. They went from "Jerry's World", the home field of the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, to their practice facility some 40 minutes away in a planned community built for Cowboys organization. Big 12 mascots and cheerleaders pose for a group photo during Big 12 Media Days at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on July 8, UC came into the league at a partial share with UCF, Houston and BYU. Now they will receive anywhere from $37 million to $42 million in Big 12 revenue depending on which projections you believe. They will also have to hand out through revenue sharing approximately $20.5 million to their athletes after the House vs. NCAA ruling. Advertisement That, and it's the third year for head coach Scott Satterfield's staff − a time when most programs expect a return on their investment. With 39 new players (21 transfers and 18 freshmen) and a select group of returning players, the Bearcats hope to overcome the past two unsatisfying seasons. UC started 2-0 in 2023, then finished 1-9 with four single-digit losses. Last season's 5-2 start was followed by five straight losses. A bitter pill was the Pitt loss in the second week when a 27-6 late third quarter fizzled in front of home fans at Nippert Stadium. And, there were three more single-digit losses. Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield addresses the media during 2025 Big 12 Football Media Days at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on July 8, Why is this Cincinnati Bearcats team different? On paper and on the field, the Bearcats have the look of a Big 12 team, which wasn't the case two years ago. Advertisement They also return a healthy Dontay Corleone, a highly-valued nose tackle who was sidelined prior to last season with a blood clot in his lungs. Tight end Joe Royer is projected as an NFL first-round draft pick by some and also returned. Both Corleone and Royer could have left for pro opportunities and both returned. Both are of the "hometown hero" variety with Corleone coming from Colerain High School and Royer from Elder. Cincinnati Bearcats coach Satterfield talks of his 'best team' It was repeated several times Tuesday and in other interviews leading up to Big 12 media days that this is the best crop of Cincinnati Bearcats Satterfield has brought into a season. Previous media polls the past two years had the Bearcats near the bottom. Though no official media poll was done for 2025, consensus is UC is no worse than middle of the pack. Advertisement "Because of the players that we brought back that have great experience in the Big 12," Satterfield said when asked why he's bullish on his Bearcats. 'Our leaders are right here today (Brendan Sorsby, Dontay Corleone, Joe Royer, Gavin Gerhardt), I think we did a great job in the portal to get positions of need. Also, this is the best chemistry we've had with the guys that are on our roster. It's a connected football team." The connection was shared at a Frisco steakhouse Monday night with center Gerhardt and nose tackle Corleone ordering 32 oz. cuts. Corleone enjoyed his so much, he asked for one to go and no one blinked. Sorsby and Royer have eaten their share of steaks in the offseason, trying to woo some of the new transfers to become Bearcats. Cincinnati Bearcats AD John Cunningham sees 3rd year being pivotal If the third try is the charm, UC AD John Cunningham is more than ready to see bowl-game success out of the 2025 UC Bearcats under Satterfield. Advertisement "I've used this analogy a couple times, but year three, they talk about 'moving day' in golf on the third day," Cunningham said. "Year three is our moving year. We've got to advance, we've got to start playing better. We saw signs last year. We've got to take those extra steps and win those close games. That's going to be really important to our year." He was integral in recruiting new offensive players. Though there's something to be said about flying under the radar, most UC personnel would disagree with a recent ranking of Big 12 quarterbacks listing Sorsby at No. 9. Advertisement "I wouldn't really say it's anything," Sorsby said shrugging off the list. "I've always had a little chipe on my shoulder. I've been kind of overlooked, maybe people didn't think as much of me as I think of myself. That's my job to go prove myself right." Said Satterfield, "There's some great ones in this league, but he can be one of the best ones. He's got to play within himself and we have to have a great surrounding cast, which I think we do. He's got all the tools. He's got a quick release, he can run, he's strong, he's competitive." Sorsby had the unique perspective Tuesday of being one of the few players on display who had actually played a game at the Ford Center at The Star. The Denton, Texas native's high school team once had a playoff game in the facility. 'The Godfather' Dontay Corleone is healthy As indicated by his two-steak appetite, Corleone is healthy and was a popular interview guest on many of the shows broadcasting from The Star. Opposing players and coaches approach him. Advertisement Once the season begins, that's not always the case. At least that's what Corleone hopes. "The hard work Niko (Football Performance Coach Palazeti) has put us through has helped us bond and that's going to go a long way," Corleone said. He understands that teams may underestimate the Bearcats based on last year's late skid, but says that's in the past. Now a homeowner (he bought one for his mom) he has a positive outlook for the year. "Buying a home at 22, coming from nothing, I wake up blessed every day," Corleone said. UC tight end Joe Royer had a reason to return Royer has met or already knows the tight ends that have made the NFL after being Cincinnati Bearcats. With an opportunity to leave for the 2025 NFL Draft, the Elder product joined Corleone in waiting for 2026. Advertisement "There's definitely a chip on our shoulder," Royer said. "I think we definitely are underrated and under-appreciated by the media, some of the things I'm seeing. We wouldn't want it any other way. We'll go out there and prove people wrong. I think the '25 Bearcats are going to be great." UC veteran center Gavin Gerhardt thinks he can leave on high note Gerhardt returns for an extra year and says the new offensive line could be better than recent offensive lines that led to Corey Kiner having back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. "I would say we're definitely underrated," Gerhardt said. "We try not to listen to the outside noise, but I'm really excited about this year with this team. We're very connected, very passionate about playing for one another and hopefully bringing a championship back to Cincinnati." Advertisement Counting his redshirt year of 2020, this will be Gerhardt's sixth season. He's been around long enough to have played four games during UC's 2021 College Football Playoff season which ended not far from Frisco with a Cotton Bowl loss to Alabama. His road to returning to a bowl would come early July 9. The four Bearcats who came to Frisco will be due in for morning workouts. Gerhardt's alarm is set for 4:30 a.m. A general view of the stage at 2025 Big 12 Football Media Days at The Star in Frisco, Texas, on July 8, 2025. Browns Passing Weapon Could Help QB Room Develop

Browns Passing Weapon Could Help QB Room Develop originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are hoping to find their franchise quarterback this offseason. With options under center, Cleveland might be in its best shape yet to break out at the quarterback position. Advertisement But for that quarterback to succeed, he'll have to have someone to throw the ball to, and that centerpiece of the passing game could be Jerry Jeudy. Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport reports Jeudy is that guy. "Jeudy logged 145 targets and was 16th in PPR points playing with bad quarterbacks last year," Davenport wrote. "If the team can get even serviceable play from Pickett, Joe Flacco's Corpse, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, why exactly can't Jeudy at least approach that level of production again? That's rhetorical. He can." Davenport seems very sure of himself, and for good reason. While in Denver, Jeudy showed flashes, but never lived up to his true potential. He never eclipsed that magical 1,000-yard mark across four seasons after being the 15th overall selection by the Broncos in 2020. Advertisement He surely never sniffed a Pro Bowl nod, either. But with a trade to Cleveland, that all changed. At least for now. In Jeudy's first season in Cleveland, he caught a career-high 90 passes for his highest production as a pro of 1,229 yards. He added four touchdowns. Jeudy was named to the Pro Bowl in 2024 as a Cleveland Brown, too. If he can develop a bit of chemistry with whoever will be under center for the Browns this season, he can make a name for himself in Cleveland.
