Russia was shaken early Wednesday by an earthquake of staggering magnitude — 8.8 — on its far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula.
Assuming the number holds, the quake would be the sixth-largest earthquake on record — the same magnitude as a 2010 quake in Chile that killed over 500 people, as well as a January 1906 Ecuador temblor whose tsunami waves reached the Northern California coast.
Could the Bay Area — still traumatized by the 7.9-magnitude quake of April 1906 — see a quake of similar magnitude?
The short answer is no, scientists say.
Fault size is a factor in the maximum magnitude of an earthquake. The longest fault in California is the San Andreas, which runs 800 miles along the coast. But even the San Andreas maxes out around 8.3 magnitude, the U.S. Geological Survey says.
By contrast, the Hayward Fault through the East Bay is just 45 miles long and probably maxes out around a 7.0 magnitude — or a 7.2 if combined with a quake on the nearby Rodgers Creek Fault, Stephen DeLong, research geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, previously told the Chronicle.
Information about the fault that produced the colossal quake in Russia was not immediately available.
But the world record-holder — a 9.5-magnitude earthquake in Chile in 1960 — originated in a fault that is 1,000 miles long and 150 miles wide.
Earthquake magnitudes are measured on a logarithmic scale. For each whole number the magnitude goes up, the amplitude of the quake rises tenfold — and the energy release is a whopping 32 times greater, per USGS.
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake is shockingly powerful. A 7.0, which either of the Bay Area's two most worrisome faults could produce, is extremely dangerous also. The U.S. Geological Survey recently found that more than a million buildings would be damaged by a 7.0 quake centered in Oakland.
'The magnitude is less important once earthquakes get to around magnitude 7.0 than the proximity to the fault,' William Ellsworth, a professor of geophysics at Stanford, previously told the Chronicle.
He noted that the 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake, the 1989 quake that caused a section of the Bay Bridge roadway to collapse and caused fires in the Marina, was centered in Santa Cruz County. It would have wreaked more havoc had it been closer to San Francisco.

The area feels an earthquake about once every couple of years. 'The northeast part of the United States does not see large earthquakes very often,' said Jessica Turner, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center, which is a part of the USGS. Since 1950, only 43 other quakes of this magnitude and larger have occurred within 155 miles (250 kilometers) of Saturday's event, according to the USGS. A much larger, 4.8-magnitude quake that struck in Tewksbury, New Jersey, a little farther west of the city, in April 2024 was felt as far away as Boston and Baltimore. Some flights were diverted or delayed after that quake, and Amtrak slowed trains throughout the busy Northeast corridor. The region sees a more damaging one only a couple times a century, if that. New York was damaged in 1737 and 1884 by earthquakes, according to USGS data. How do East Coast earthquakes compare with West Coast ones? The difference between East Coast and West Coast quakes lies in the 'mechanism,' said seismologist Lucy Jones. California is at the edge of the San Andreas fault system, which has two tectonic plates: the Pacific Ocean plate and the North American plate. Two plates move and push to build up stress, meaning earthquakes happen relatively frequently. New York falls in the middle of a plate, far from the nearest boundaries in the center of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Sea — resulting in residual stresses and making it difficult to predict where earthquakes will occur. The area is also home to the well-known Ramapo Fault line. Geologists have not seen evidence that would suggest it has had a large earthquake in some time, but there have been smaller ones. Saturday's quake cannot necessarily be associated with this fault, experts say. The same size earthquake is felt over a much larger area in New York than it would be in California. 'The rocks on the East Coast are particularly cold and hard and therefore, do a better job of transmitting the energy,' said Jones. In California, the various faults are more akin to a broken bell, which doesn't transmit energy as well. Does this signal more to come? Every earthquake makes another one more likely, but within a range, scientists say. Advertisement 'At just 3.0, the chances are there will not be another felt event,' Jones said, estimating about a 50-50 chance there will be no activity that can be recorded. New York City and the broader East Coast were shaken by a 3.0-magnitude earthquake late on August 2, reminding locals of a significantly larger quake that startled the region in April 2024. The earthquake, which occurred at 10:18 P.M. local time, was centered near Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., about 10 miles from downtown Manhattan, at a depth of about six miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Neither New York City nor Bergen County, N.J., where Hasbrouck Heights is located, reported major damage or injuries, according to the New York Times. Earthquakes large enough to be felt are uncommon in the eastern U.S. 'It's a pretty quiet part of the country,' Benjamin Fernando, a seismologist at Johns Hopkins University, told Scientific American in 2024. However, small earthquakes, with magnitudes of 2.5 or lower, are quite common in the region. The earthquake magnitude scale is logarithmic, with each whole-number increase in magnitude representing a 10-fold increase in the size of the seismic waves it produces. That means the 2024 earthquake was 63 times bigger than the August 2 event. (The massive earthquake that rattled Russia just days ago, a magnitude 8.8 event, produced seismic waves a stunning 630,000 times larger in amplitude than the August 2 New Jersey quake.) In turn, the August 2 event created seismic waves with about three times the amplitude of a 2.5 magnitude event that represents the high end of typical activity in the region. The August 2 earthquake occurred nearly 40 miles away from the 2024 earthquake, which is too far away for it to be considered an aftershock of the previous event, although the 2024 quake does continue to spur aftershocks, according to the USGS. The USGS attributed the August 2 earthquake to 'faulting at shallow depths in the crust' and noted that it did not occur near a plate boundary. The region has many faults, but these fractures in Earth's crust are very old—they date to the era when the Appalachian and Blue Ridge Mountains were built, hundreds of millions of years ago. Although the East Coast is not prone to large earthquakes like the West Coast, the rattling of an East Coast quake is felt more broadly because the hard bedrock of the region transfers seismic energy more efficiently than the heavily faulted West Coast bedrock.
