50% fall in tourists taking Palace on Wheels; RTDC,private co play blame game

Jaipur: Occupancies have fallen by over 50% in the state's flagship heritage tourist train, Palace on Wheels, in the past two years, with the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) raising contractual violations by the private company which had taken up operations in 2023-24 at its review meeting on Monday, sources said. In 2024-25, the number of tourists taking the luxury train fell to 685 compared to 811 the year before. In fact, the number has come down to less than 50% when compared to FY19 and FY20, when over 1,500 tourists took the train. In 2023-24, the train was leased to a private company for operation and management (O&M) with an annual fee of Rs 5 crore with an additional 18% on revenues. RTDC officials say the private company is delaying the payments. Even though it recently paid the annual fees, it has not yet deposited the GST. Sources also blamed the laxity of RTDC for the issue. The private company, in a letter to the RTDC MD, stated that the GST was a dispute that had to be resolved. While RTDC chairman Rajesh Yadav reviewed the performance of the train Monday, sources said several contractual violations had come to the notice, for which the corporation was equally responsible, without giving the details. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like It's Genius for Learning Languages [See Why] Talkpal AI Undo The major contentious issue between the O&M company and RTDC is the discount given to general sales agents who book tickets for the train. "The private operator of the train has given discounts of up to 40% to sales agents, overshooting the 18% stipulated in the agreement. If the discounts are high, then the corporation loses revenue," said the source. Similarly, the private operator is liable to pay about Rs 75 lakh interest on payment delays, which the RTDC has not pursued in earnest. However, the O&M company is contesting the interest liability. Also, there has been a diversion of destinations, which was not addressed by the corporation. Sources in the corporation alleged violations of the contract as space for the spa and gym in the train was reduced in the name of renovation to make room for an additional berth. Similarly, all income that needed to come to the escrow account did not happen, sources said. The account was mandated by the agreement, but RTDC overlooked the irregularities. While the private company has said that the bookings have been affected due to the reduction in foreign tourist arrivals, the tourism department's numbers show an increase. The arrival of foreign visitors crossed the pre-Covid level in 2023-24 and 2024-25, according to the department. In 2024, 20.68 lakh foreign tourists visited Rajasthan, up from the pre-Covid peak of 17.54 lakh.

Boeing defense union strikes for first time in almost 30 years

Workers at Boeing Co.'s St. Louis-area defense factories are striking for the first time in almost three decades after union members rejected the company's modified contract offer. A worker pickets outside the Boeing Defense, Space & Security facility in Berkeley, Missouri, US, on Monday, Aug. 4, 2025.(Bloomberg) About 3,200 machinists walked off the job around midnight after members voted down a deal that would have raised wages by 20% and boosted retirement contributions. The union last went on strike in 1996, with the stoppage lasting 99 days. 'IAM District 837 members have spoken loud and clear, they deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense,' Tom Boelling, the union local's top official, said in a statement ahead of the deadline. The labor action will amplify financial pressure on Boeing's defense and space division, which generates almost a third of the company's revenue. At the same time, the operation that's now gone on strike is far smaller than the civil aircraft business that was severely affected late last year by a walkout, which brought manufacturing in the Seattle area to a standstill for weeks and contributed to Boeing selling equity worth almost $24 billion. 'We are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan to ensure our non-striking workforce can continue supporting our customers,' Dan Gillian, a Boeing vice president and senior St. Louis site executive, said in a statement. Union members build fighter aircraft such as the F-15, the T-7 training jet, missiles and munitions. They also manufacture components for Boeing's 777X commercial jets. In March, Boeing won a contract to design and build the US's next-generation stealth fighter jet, beating out rival Lockheed Martin Corp. for the multibillion dollar program dubbed the F-47. Boeing's defense business was profitable for a second consecutive quarter, the company said last month, as it avoided charges that long dogged the business. The company also managed to improve the performance of fixed-price development programs responsible for the worst of previous overruns. There's been a recent groundswell of activism at aerospace manufacturers, with unions gaining leverage amid shortages of highly skilled mechanics. Machinists walked off the job for three weeks at Pratt & Whitney this year, contributing to engine shortages at planemaker Airbus SE. Boeing's commercial factories were shut down by striking workers for two months in late 2024. Boeing Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg downplayed the potential fallout from a strike during the company's July 29 earnings call. 'The order of magnitude of this is much, much less than what we saw last fall,' Ortberg said, noting that the St. Louis union is about 1/10 the size of the Seattle-based union that struck last fall. 'I wouldn't worry too much about the implications of the strike. We'll manage our way through that.' Boeing had crafted its latest offer to address concerns raised by members of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 837 after they rejected its initial proposal last week, Gillian told reporters on July 31. Boeing's proposal to district members would see average wages increase to $102,600 from $75,000 for IAM 837 members. Boeing also eliminated a controversial schedule proposal and revised its 401(k) terms so that workers get the full contribution increase upfront instead of spread over three years. Boeing cautioned that it would withdraw a $5,000 signing bonus and wouldn't offer it again to workers if the contract wasn't ratified on Sunday.

MTC inks pact with firms for launching CNG filling stations

Chennai: In a push towards alternative fuels, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has signed agreements with two gas distribution firms — Torrent Gas Chennai Pvt Ltd and THINK Gas — for setting up compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations at two bus depots. The CNG stations will be established at MTC's existing Ambattur depot and the proposed Varadharajapuram depot along the Outer Ring Road. Torrent Gas will oversee operations in Chennai and Tiruvallur, while THINK Gas will manage the Kancheepuram and Chengalpet regions. MTC plans to convert 240 diesel-run buses into CNG-powered vehicles. Over time, 1,000 additional buses will be converted. "Ambattur was chosen as our first location because it already has a pipeline network. Varadharajapuram, on the other hand, is right along the Outer Ring Road, making it logistically ideal," said T Prabhushankar, managing director of MTC. THINK Gas's upcoming station in Varadharajapuram will be designed to handle up to 125 buses a day, with a dispensing capacity of 7,000 kg/day, said N T Thirukkumaran, regional head (Kancheepuram), THINK Gas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Moose Approaches Girl At Bus Stop In Sverdlovskaya Oblast - Watch What Happens Happy in Shape Undo However, laying groundwork comes with its own challenges. "Getting local clearances, right of way (RoW) permit, and district administrative approvals are the main challenges," he added. To make the switch financially viable, MTC has arrived at a favourable pricing plan. For the first three years, the fuel will be priced 6% lower than diesel's landed cost, which translates to around 85.2 when diesel is 90.65 a litre. A 4 per unit discount will follow for the rest of the agreement's duration. Torrent Gas did not respond to requests for comment.
