Aurora Orchestra/Collon/Power review – Italian immersion with introspective Berlioz and extrovert Mendelssohn
Beyond their loosely shared inspiration and form, however, the two works have little in common. Mendelssohn's is an expert and extrovert piece of symphonic writing, tight and technically impeccable. That of Berlioz, meanwhile, follows a wandering star all its own, broodingly romantic and constantly innovative, exemplified by the solo viola that depicts the melancholy of Byron's introspective hero Childe Harold.
Left to themselves, these two works could have formed a well-contrasted programme of a traditional kind. But the Aurora and their conductor Nicholas Collon don't do traditional. They are above all else performance players, committed to immersing themselves and the audience in the excitement of live musical experience. It is one of the many reasons audiences love them.
So in the second half, the Mendelssohn was played from memory, an Aurora speciality, the score taken at terrific tempos and with the players standing up and interacting. It was hard to resist, especially when the players then dispersed into the hall to encore the Italian symphony's breakneck final movement saltarello. Watch out for the Aurora giving the same treatment to Shostakovich's fifth symphony at the Proms this summer.
Harold, meanwhile, was presented as a 'dramatic exploration'. Texts based on Berlioz's Mémoires were declaimed between movements and from amid the orchestra by actor Charlotte Ritchie. Collon and the viola soloist Lawrence Power chipped in, too. Power even whistled his idée fixe theme before wandering Byronically through the hall as he played the lonely music at the symphony's heart.
It would be churlish not to be caught up in this. But it can sometimes distract. In his recording of Berlioz's symphony under Andrew Manze, Power is as poetic and nuanced a Harold violist as any on disc. But amid so much other activity, the Aurora's orchestral balance sometimes did him fewer favours. When he stood stock still to deliver Harold's skeletal arpeggios at the end of the second movement, it was a reminder that Berlioz's music provides its own theatre.

Prince Harry's Invictus Games CEO addresses whether Royal Family are invited to next event
The Royal Family are 'very much welcome' at the Duke of Sussex 's Invictus Games in 2027, the event's chief executive said. The statement comes after the Mail on Sunday exclusively revealed that Montecito-based Prince Harry, 40, is to extend an olive branch to his family by inviting them to the event, which will take place in Birmingham. When asked whether members of the ruling family are due to attend, Helen Helliwell told People, 'We'd be delighted if members of the royal family were able to attend and would very much welcome their presence in a couple of years.' Should they accept the invitation, it would mark the first time members of the Royal Family have attended the Invictus Games since its inception in 2014. But the extraordinary move, which could see Harry pictured with the Royal Family for the first time since the late Queen's funeral, has raised eyebrows among some commentators. Ingrid Seward said: 'The King might attend to show support for the Armed Forces and congratulate Harry on the most significant success in his life. 'The only reason the King is wary of associating with his son is that he no longer trusts him not to repeat their private conversations as he has done in the past. This goes for all the working members of the family.' Fellow royal commentator Katie Nicholl added: 'The King absolutely wants a relationship with his youngest son and with his grandchildren. 'Invictus hopes the Royal Family will come along to support the wounded veterans taking part. Harry is hopeful his father will set aside their differences to attend the Invictus Games and support veterans. 'The Royals have always been hugely supportive of Invictus and proud of what Harry has achieved in that arena. This is one olive branch from him which might be reciprocated.' Harry made it clear in a BBC interview in May that he would welcome a rapprochement with his father and with the wider family, despite acknowledging the hurt caused by his brutally honest memoir, Spare. 'There's no point in continuing to fight any more,' he said. 'Life is precious.' He added: 'Forgiveness is 100 per cent a possibility because I would like to get my father and brother back.' The Invictus invitations are thought to represent the first time Harry has publicly reached out in a bid to gather his family together. The invitees and the wording of the invitations are said to have been approved by Harry, with the emails being sent to private secretaries at the Palace. The Games are expected to bring significant economic and social benefit to Birmingham. A spokesman for Invictus said in June: 'No formal invitations have been issued as preparations are in the early stages.' It comes after insiders claimed that Harry and Meghan's children will not be given official roles when Prince William becomes King. However, it wasn't just the length of the relationship that led fans of the model to question the somewhat unlikely pairing. The fitness fanatic was already father to two-year old son Logan with former partner Rachel Christie when he embarked on a tumultuous relationship with Kelly Brook in 2013. McIntosh, an imposing Royal Marine Commando, initially crossed paths with Brook while attending a New Years Eve party at Steam & Rye, the ill-fated American-themed bar she once owned on London's Leadenhall Street. No stranger to celebrity romances, he'd previously enjoyed his own taste of fame after participating in a short-lived revival of Gladiators. His love of bodybuilding, combined with an impressive military background ticked all the right boxes for enthusiastic Sky producers as they prepared to reboot the defunct ITV show for a millennial audience. But it was a chaotic relationship with Brook, established some four years after his departure from Gladiators, that earned him greater exposure - and a greater share of the spotlight. Even the more disinterested of observers were surprised when McIntosh proposed to the presenter less than three months into their relationship - perhaps because Brook had already dumped him once, just two weeks earlier, and wiped all traces of him from her social media channels. According to The Sun, the then 34-year-old presenter was left 'dumbstruck' by his proposal - but took just 'three seconds' to accept. A friend told the paper: 'It's still a closely guarded secret and came to Kelly as a massive shock. 'But she's at that time in her life now where she wants to make a commitment and she has fallen head over heels for David.' A difficult year was rounded off by a court appearance in April 2014, during which he pleaded guilty to crashing a van load of dead badgers while on a controversial animal cull the previous September. Just three months before crossing paths with Brook, the TV personality had been employed to take the dead creatures for disposal as part of the badger cull in Gloucestershire. Away from court and newly single, McIntosh would soon embark on a series of fresh romances, notably a relationship with Australian jewelry designer Juliet Bakos. But the bitter fallout would cast a tall shadow over his subsequent relationships and eventually lead to him sharing a series of abusive messages, purportedly sent by Brook about Bakos. A source told The Sun: 'Kelly said even more offensive things to David but for Juliet's sake he didn't make them public. He doesn't understand why Kelly is even interested in his life any more. 'She is the one who dumped him, then begged him to come back, only so she could dump him again. She didn't want me travelling for work. She didn't want me to go to America. She wanted me to do some nine-to-five job, and that isn't me. I wasn't ready to retire in Australia.'
