Shubman Gill backs two-spinner theory for 2nd Test: Unusual but it works

India Today19 hours ago
India's Test skipper Shubman Gill has hinted at a possible shift in strategy ahead of the second Test against England in Birmingham, supporting the idea of fielding two spinners — an uncommon move in English conditions, but one he believes could pay off given the unusually dry summer.Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Gill pointed out that Edgbaston's typically seam-friendly reputation may not hold this time around due to the hot and dry weather sweeping across the UK.advertisement"In England, generally teams don't play with two spinners, but the weather isn't typical and there is very less rain, a lot of heat," Gill said. "So playing an extra spinner won't be a bad option."
India were in control for the majority of the first Test in Leeds but failed to close out the game, with Ben Duckett's counter-attacking 149 leading England to a five-wicket win on the final day. Reflecting on that match, Gill believes that including another spinner might have changed the outcome."Even in the previous game, I felt having another spinner could've made the difference since Jaddu bhai (Ravindra Jadeja) was successful in asking questions to the batters and containing runs as well."Gill explained that on flat tracks where the ball stops swinging after the initial overs, spin can be crucial-not necessarily to take wickets but to control the game and create pressure leading into the second new ball.advertisement"On batting-friendly conditions wherein the ball isn't swinging much after 30-40 overs, a spinner can stop the runflow if not pick wickets. That helps the pacers return fresh later on."However, he acknowledged that the decision isn't straightforward and comes with its own risks-particularly if India end up bowling on Day 1 when conditions could still favour seamers."These are difficult calls to take because, if we are going in with an extra spinner, we'd need to think about how to manage the second spinner on day one if we are bowling first."Gill stressed the importance of a well-rounded playing XI and indicated that India would look for a combination that ensures batting depth without compromising bowling versatility."Ideally we would want to have batting depth till seven or eight. It is also important to find the right combination for the particular ground and that particular match," he said."It is important to be consistent against England's batting lineup and bowl in one area-maybe try and make them play in front of the wicket as much as possible."- EndsTune InYou May Also Like

'Kuldeep Yadav is India's next best attacking option after Jasprit Bumrah': Ex-Australia captain slams shock Edgbaston selections

Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has questioned India's team selection for the second Test at Edgbaston, expressing surprise over the exclusion of premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav . India made three changes to their playing XI, bringing in Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep in place of Shardul Thakur, Sai Sudharsan, and Jasprit Bumrah. England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl. Reacting on social media, Finch wrote: 'If Bumrah was fit to play then surely you need to pick the best bowler in the world? At the very least Kuldeep has to be in the XI if you're worried about taking 20 wickets. Yes, he might be more expensive but he's the next best attacking option!' Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the world's best all-format bowlers, was left out despite being reportedly fit. Kuldeep, India's standout spinner in the first Test, also missed out on selection. With India trailing 0-1 in the five-match series, the absence of two key wicket-taking options has sparked intense debate. When Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir looked at the pitch to decide India Playing XI After being put in to bat, India's stand-in skipper Shubman Gill explained the reasoning: "Would've bowled first as well. If there's anything in the wicket, it's on the first day. Three changes - Reddy, Washi and Akash Deep come in. No Bumrah. Just to manage his workload. We did get a good break, and this is an important match for us. But the third Test being at Lord's, we think there'll be more in that pitch, so we'll use him there. We were tempted to play Kuldeep, but looking at the last match, our lower order didn't do well, so we decided to add some depth to the batting. Jarell Quansah joins Leverkusen from Liverpool after winning Under-21 Euro with England

Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday announced that it has replaced former captain Jonathan Tah with Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a club-record signing for a defender. The 22-year-old Quansah signed a contract through June 2030 and will wear Tah's former No. 4 shirt, the Bundesliga club said Wednesday. Quansah won the Under-21 European Championship with England last week. But he was unable to establish himself as a regular starter at Liverpool ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté. The reported fee of more than 30 million euros ($35.3 million) rising to 40 million ($47 million) with bonuses corresponds roughly with what Liverpool agreed to pay Leverkusen for Netherlands right back Jeremie Frimpong in May. According to reports, Liverpool secured a buy-back option for the English defender for more than 60 million euros ($70.6 million) after he has spent two seasons at Leverkusen. Leverkusen also sold star player Florian Wirtz to Liverpool last month for a Bundesliga-record fee. He had spent a decade at Leverkusen and was a key part of the team which won the Bundesliga and German Cup unbeaten in 2023-24. 'One of the most promising English central defenders. He's fast, agile, a good footballer,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said of Quansah. 'He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defense dominated by world-class players. With Jarell, our defense gains significant dynamism, pace and toughness in tackling, and he's another very important building block.' Rolfes is overseeing huge changes at Leverkusen following coach Xabi Alonso's departure for Real Madrid. Wirtz, Tah and Frimpong have all left, and Rolfes has been signing promising young players to make up for its departures.

ENG vs IND 2nd Test Session 1: IND dominate with strong start at Edgbaston

The Indian cricket team, in dire need of a win in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, began the day on a promising note, reaching 98 for 2 at lunch on Day 1. India looked comfortable against the swinging ball early on and, as the session progressed, appeared increasingly in control, setting the stage for yet another big innings in England. Earlier, England won the toss and opted to field. India began their innings with caution, scoring just nine runs in the first five overs. For England, Chris Woakes looked the most impressive, bowling four maiden overs in his first five. KL Rahul (2), who initially looked comfortable while facing Woakes's changing lines, was the first to depart, clean bowled by the English pacer in the ninth over. Woakes could have had three wickets in the opening hour, but both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair were saved by umpire's call after England's LBW appeals against them. Nair later broke the shackles with a flurry of boundaries, bringing India back into the game and giving Jaiswal some breathing space. India looked far more comfortable after the drinks break, with runs flowing briskly and without rash shots, increasing frustration in the English camp. Nair did play a few awkward shots, but luck favoured him as he continued his innings. In the dying minutes of the session, Jaiswal brought up his 11th Test fifty, continuing his purple patch in red-ball cricket. India added 98 runs in the first session — a better start than at Leeds, where they had added 92 runs for the same number of wickets lost on Day 1. However, just when it seemed India would end the session calmly, Brydon Carse struck to dismiss Karun Nair (31), giving England a mini-comeback before the stroke of lunch. In the second session, Yashasvi Jaiswal (62*), along with Shubman Gill (1*), will resume India's innings and look to accelerate the run rate to put England on the back foot early.
