No trains to call at Crewkerne Station as weather disturbs tracks
Tom McNamee from Network Rail said repeated delays in the Crewkerne area can lead to widespread cancellations and gaps in services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids."We have carefully studied the impact and unfortunately it will not be possible to operate a safe and reliable timetable while calling at Crewkerne," he added.
SWR and Network Rail warned additional restrictions and timetable changes are likely to be necessary on the line between Salisbury and Axminster over the summer as dry weather continues."We will continue to carefully monitor [soil moisture levels] and give customers as much notice as possible," Mr McNamee said.

New £1billion ‘hoover' trains rolled out across major city – they will prevent overcrowding & have powerful air con
COMMUTING in the summer heat can be an almost unbearable experience for Brits. While our temperatures may not reach the scorching highs of other countries, it can feel just as bad on a crowded train car with no air conditioning. 2 A new fleet of trains will serve commuters at one of the country's busiest stations (stock image) Credit: Alamy Certain commutes in London can feel particularly unpleasant during the summer months. Most notably, any route which takes you through Waterloo Station, the capital's busiest train station. This bustling south London hub has been plagued with overcrowding for years. And now steps are being taken to tackle this issue, with dozens of new trains set to roll out soon. This new fleet, which has been dubbed "platform hoovers", will serve routes through Waterloo and across London. The 10-carriage trains, which total to £1 billion, will be able to carry about 50% more passengers than the current ones in service. This fleet was first promised in 2019 by South Western Railway (SWR), but currently only 14 of the proposed 90 Arterio trains are in service. These ambitious new locomotives will be air-conditioned and fully walk-through. They will also be equipped with wi-fi, charging points at every seat, real-time information, and accessible toilets. SWR hasn't confirmed when the full fleet will come into service, however it has promised that "more" trains would be rolled out "over the coming weeks". 'Do not travel' warning as London's Waterloo hit by 'major signalling failure' with trains unable to use 14 platforms This comes after Labour MP Fleur Anderson raised concerns about platforms at Putney and Wandsworth Town stations becoming overcrowded. It was reported that the station was so busy that people were unable to board trains, which the MP referred to as "extreme overcrowding". "These new trains, which are great, have been announced several times. They're coming," Anderson previously told the Standard. "The rollout has been really, really slow... But I've met with the chief executive and he is now going to consistently roll out more every week. "It is really, really late but it is finally good to have them coming." New fleet facts There has been a £1 billion investment in a fleet of up to 90 new Arterio trains. There are currently 14 of the new trains in service, running on over 160 weekday services. They were originally slated to enter service in 2019, but first passenger operations didn't begin until January 2024. The fleet can hold up to 50% more passengers than the current trains. They will feature air‑conditioning, walk‑through carriages, Wi‑Fi, charging points at every seat, real‑time passenger information, and accessible toilets. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for SWR shared a statement on the new fleet. "We've introduced eight more trains in the past two months and, as of today, we are running 14 Arterios on more than 160 services every weekday, on routes to Dorking, Guildford, Hampton Court, Kingston, Reading, Shepperton, Twickenham, and Windsor & Eton Riverside. "We're looking forward to many more customers enjoying the increased capacity and comfort the Arterios bring to journeys as we introduce more trains into service over the coming weeks." More on trains Meanwhile, a new £3 billion fleet of more than 90 air-conditioned underground trains has been delayed for another year. And a small English town is set to open a new £42 million train station that will reopen key link shut for over 60 years. Britain's busiest railway will be shutting down for three weeks next month for a £20 million demolition. Plus, a new £15 million train station linking tiny town to three major destinations has been unveiled in a new satellite photo. And an English train station is set to shut for two years ahead of a major £11.5 million revamp.

Lionesses enjoy late-night Euros celebrations in London ahead of Mall parade
Thousands of fans are expected to descend on central London on Tuesday after the team defended their Euros title with a penalty shootout win over Spain in the final in Basel, Switzerland. The Lionesses and their head coach Sarina Wiegman will make their way along The Mall near Buckingham Palace just after midday, before a trophy ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of the palace. Members of the squad were pictured arriving by taxi in groups for celebrations at the Little Italy restaurant in Soho on Monday evening. The team sported more casual wear for the gathering after earlier attending a reception at Downing Street, hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock. Mark Bullingham, chief executive of the Football Association (FA), said: 'We are so proud of all of the players, Sarina and the support team who have all been part of this incredible achievement. 'They have all worked unbelievably hard and we know the nation shares our pride. Sarina Wiegman takes a selfie with some of her team in the garden of Number 10 (Richard Pohle/The Times/PA) 'The victory celebration in London on Tuesday will give England fans an opportunity to celebrate with the players, and be part of history. 'We've had amazing support from our fans both in Switzerland and at home throughout the tournament, and we look forward to celebrating together and creating some lifelong memories.' The celebrations on home soil began on Monday afternoon when the team landed at Southend Airport in Essex. Hundreds of fans waited patiently to catch a glimpse of Wiegman's side and the trophy, which captain Leah Williamson held up in front of jubilant crowds. England fans erupted into cheers when the Lionesses left Southend Airport, with captain Leah Williamson holding the trophy (Yui Mok/PA) Number 10 was decorated for the occasion, with St George's flags draped over windows and bunting along the railings. Wiegman and some of her Lionesses spoke to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer via video call from the garden of No 10. The Dutchwoman said 'Hello Keir, nice to see you', adding 'it's lovely here'. Sir Keir said: 'Fantastic to see you all and welcome to Downing Street. I just wanted to say a huge, huge congratulations to you and to the whole team. 'It was an absolutely amazing victory and you must've felt the eyes and ears of the whole country on you last night.' At the reception, Wiegman congratulated her team and called for more investment in the women's game, saying: 'The team is just incredible, we won the Euros but making the final, we're already legendary, what the team has done and the team behind the team.' Speaking a few hours before the Government announced a new package of measures to boost access to grassroots football, she added: 'This incredible team won the Euros and then straightaway sent a letter to you, the Government, asking for attention and asking for access to football for all girls. 'Steps have been taken but we're not done yet, we have to keep moving forward and we need a little bit more.' In a post shared on X on Monday evening, Ms Rayner described the Lionesses as 'absolute legends', adding: 'So proud of what they've done for women's football and representing England with such brilliance. 'Let the celebrations continue!!' On Monday night, the Government announced plans for priority access to grassroots football pitches for girls and women to be more than doubled over the next five years to meet the expected increased demand after the Lionesses' dramatic win. England forward Chloe Kelly at Downing Street on Monday evening (Richard Pohle/The Times/PA) As well as the Prime Minister, the King also congratulated the European champions, saying in a statement posted on X: 'You have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms. 'Well done, Lionesses.' The Prince of Wales was spotted in the stands in Basel on Sunday applauding with those around him, including Princess Charlotte, and royal celebrations could continue as a trip to Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle may be arranged for the team as plans for a reception in the autumn are being explored by royal aides, it is understood.

Top UK airport opens huge new departures lounge with interactive Lego store and street food market
THE largest airport outside of London has opened a new departures lounge as part of its ongoing £1.3 billion transformation. Manchester Airport's redeveloped Terminal 2 departures lounge has opened to the public with a number of new shops and eateries. 3 3 The upgraded facility now boasts six new shops, including a Lego store which promises an "interactive, f amily-friendly experience". Other shops for passengers to explore include Pandora and Rituals. For dining and refreshments, passengers can stop off at well knwon brands such as Starbucks, Upper Crust and Joe & The Juice. The departures lounge is part of the airport's decade-long project, which will more than double the terminal's size. The new opening follows the opening of a terminal extension back in 2021. In addition, the airport expects the Terminal 2 building to be completed soon. And there will be even more shops expected to open later in the year, with luxury fashion brand Chanel, WH Smith and a Fever Tree cocktail and champagne bar. This is in addition to the Great Northern Market - a food court with a number of street food options. Once the terminal is fully complete it will also have 13 areas where aircraft will park and boarding gates and Terminal 1 will close. Manchester Airport anticipates that over 70 per cent of passengers will use the new facilities. Chris Woodroofe, managing director at Manchester Airport, said: "Manchester and the North are woven through the fabric of this terminal building, from the worker bee and honeycomb motif in the terminal's design, to the many Northern brands operating shops and restaurants in our departures lounge." The airport also recently opened its new security hall - which will eventually be linked via a walkway to the departures lounge. This new facility features advanced scanners which will eventually allow passengers to keep liquids within their hand luggage, and it includes 10 new lanes along with updated check-in desks Over 30million passengers have already used the terminal extension since it opened four years ago. And last year it was celebrated for its design with a UNESCO-backed Prix Versailles award. Manchester Airport also announced a multi-million-pound investment in Terminal 3 a few months ago. Plans for Terminal 3 include a new terminal entrance, upgraded security equipment, additional seating, new shops and places to eat, a 500-seat bar offering airfield views and an expanded dining zone. Five ways to save money at airports NAVIGATING an airport with a young family without overspending can be tough, but these hacks can help.
