Driver killed in two-vehicle crash near Simpang Sangan
BINTULU (July 7): An accident involving two vehicles on the Pan Borneo-Tatau road near Simpang Sangan yesterday evening claimed the life of a 30-year-old man and left two others injured.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) identified the deceased as Mohammad Norazfarizdwan Iqbal Inai, who was driving a Toyota Vios.
A team of six firefighters from the Tatau fire station was dispatched to the location following a distress call received at 7.06pm.
In a statement, Tatau police chief DSP Jame Reis said preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred when the driver of a Perodua Kembara, who was in the left lane and attempting to switch to the right, was hit by a Toyota Vios traveling straight in the right lane.
'As a result of the collision, the Toyota Vios lost control and slammed into a road barrier at the P-Turn junction.
'The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Tatau Fire and Rescue Department,' he said.
Medical personnel from the Tatau clinic later confirmed that Mohammad Norazfarizdwan died at the scene.
The driver of the Kembara and a passenger sustained injuries and were first treated at the Tatau clinic before being referred to Nyabau Hospital in Bintulu for further medical attention.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Jame reminded motorists to always exercise caution while driving and to comply with all traffic regulations to avoid such incidents.

Sungai Korok has claimed 10 lives since 2012
KOTA BARU: The Fire and Rescue Department has recorded 13 incidents of vehicles plunging into Sungai Korok, Jitra in Kedah since 2012. Its director-general Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said the 13 incidents resulting in 10 deaths, including five children. He said the most recent case which occurred on July 7, involving the couple and their four children who tragically lost their lives was the 10th fatality since 2012. "The July 7 incident brought the total number of fatalities to 10, while 16 other victims survived in previous cases," he said. "These tools should be mounted within easy reach, such as on the driver's door or sun visor. "If stored in the glove box or boot, they may be unreachable in an emergency," he added. Woman killed after being hit by Hilux in Keningau

Satria driver in viral accident pleads not guilty to dangerous driving
SEREMBAN: The driver of a Proton Satria involved in a viral accident here last Sunday claimed trial at the magistrate's court here today to a charge of dangerous driving. Accused Iskandar Abd Aris, 20, a food delivery rider, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before magistrate Saiful Sayoti. According to the charge, he was accused of driving a Proton Satria recklessly in a manner dangerous to the public. The charge under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries up to five years in jail and a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000, along with disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least five years. If convicted, his probationary licence may be revoked. The accused pleaded guilty to another charge under Section 26(1) of the same act for driving without a valid licence. If convicted, he faces a fine of between RM300 and RM2,000 or imprisonment for up to three months or both. Both offences were committed about 2am in Persiaran Senawang 1 on July 6. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Zul Azrin Zainuddin proposed that bail be set at RM12,000 for the dangerous driving charge and requested a new mention date to submit a social report for the charge of driving without a licence. Lawyer Noor Syairah Izzati Mohd Noor appealed for low bail, saying that her client works as a food delivery rider and supports three siblings and a mother with health issues. The court set bail at RM3,300 and fixed Aug 21 for case mention and submission of documents and the social report. It was reported that a Proton Satria driven by a 19-year-old overturned before crashing into a Perodua Axia in Persiaran Senawang 1 on July 6. The driver was allegedly street racing. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Hatta Che Din had said an 18-year-old female passenger in the Perodua Axia was seriously injured, while the Proton Satria driver sustained minor injuries.
