US aircraft carrier patrols West PH Sea
GMA News Online, along with other select media outfits, was invited to observe the activities of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
USS George Washington commanding officer Captain Timothy Waitts noted the role of the vessel for an open and free Indo-Pacific region amid China's aggression.
'We share the values of open and free Pacific Indo-Pacific region that's why we're out here. We know the importance of this theater or this region,' Waitts told reporters.
'It's a vast region, many nations, most of them with coastline. The importance of the open and free sea lanes just from a commercial aspect alone is important to them. It's important to us and in that way we share those values,' he added.

While Waitts refused to specify other US assets present in the West Philippine Sea, he said that the USS George Washington generally works with other ships.
'I won't speak to force composition and that sort of stuff. I mean, we are part of the strike group. We generally work in the vicinity or work with the strike group ships that come out and as part of the strike group escorts whatever you want to call it,' he said.
'So there are other ships that we work with. Some of those will be pulling in here with us,' he added.
Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Parts of the South China Sea that fall within Philippine territory have been renamed by the government as the West Philippine Sea to reinforce the country's claim.
The West Philippine Sea refers to the maritime areas on the western side of the Philippine archipelago, including the Luzon Sea and the waters around, within, and adjacent to the Kalayaan Island Group and Bajo de Masinloc.
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled in favor of the Philippines over China's claims in the South China Sea, saying that it had "no legal basis."

Torre vs. Baste set for Sunday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum —PNP chief says
A boxing showdown between the country's top cop, Police General Nicolas Torre III and acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte will take place this Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila. That's according to Torre himself, as he was asked by reporters on Thursday during his training for the "charity boxing."" 'Kung ready sila sa venue, I can show up. Pero naka-set na actually ang Rizal Memorial Coliseum. A ring has already been set up there para sa Sunday,' Torre said. This was Torre's response as he was asked about Senator Ping Lacson's social media post about an executive of a resort casino hotel who is supposedly willing to provide a venue for the match. GMA News Online has reached out to Duterte, but he has yet to reply as of posting time. Torre, meanwhile, also said there are already "sponsors" for the event. 'Whether he shows up or not, may mga sponsors na may nagsabi na magdo-donate na lang ng mga ayuda sa ating mga kababayan na nasalanta ng bagyo at baha,' Torre said. (Whether he shows up or not, there are sponsors who have said they will just donate aid to our countrymen affected by the tropical cyclones and flood.) 'Kung wala naman siya ay magdi-distribute na lang kami ng ayuda,' he added. (If he doesn't show up, we will just distribute assistance.) In a vlog uploaded on Youtube on Sunday, Duterte mentioned Torre and challenged him for a fistfight. 'Kasi matapang ka lang naman you have the position. Pero kung suntukan tayo alam kong makaya kita. But then you're a coward,' Duterte said. (You're brave because you have the position. But if we fight, I know I can handle you. But then you're a coward.) On March 11, Torre led the arrest of the acting mayor's father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, as Philippine authorities assisted Interpol in serving a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the older Duterte for crimes against humanity in connection with his drug war. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

PH Embassy warns vs child porn amid arrest of 18 Pinoy seafarers in US
The Philippine Embassy in Washington has issued an advisory against possession and distribution of child pornography in the US amid "increasing incidents onboard vessels in American waters." 'In view of increasing incidents of arrests, detention and deportation of individuals due to child pornography-related offenses, the Philippine embassy reminds the members of the Filipino community and overseas Filipino workers in the United States and onboard vessels in US territorial waters, that child pornography is one of the worst forms of child exploitation and to consume it perpetuates such exploitation,' the embassy said on July 19. The embassy did not mention a specific incident but the statement was made after US online news Wavy said the Filipino workers of Carnival Sunshine cruise line, all bearing valid 10-year C-1/D visas, were 'forcibly removed in handcuffs' by Customs and Border Patrol officers at the Port of Norfolk in Virginia. Officers reportedly told the workers they were accused of possessing child pornography, 'In this regard, everyone is enjoined to desist from downloading, possessing, viewing, transporting, distributing and selling child pornography,' said the embassy advisory. GMA News Online has reached out to the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers for comment, but they have yet to reply as of posting time. Arrests Since the Biden administration, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Customs and Border Protection have conducted a series of arrests of cruise ship employees due to alleged child pornography. Aquilina Soriano Versoza, executive director of the Pilipino Workers Center, and other members of the group protested the arrest outside the cruise ship, saying the Filipinos were abruptly removed despite lack of evidence and due legal process. The embassy, on the other hand, said it 'respects the right of individuals to seek redress of grievances or take legal action if they feel they have been wrongly accused of legal infractions.' 'Please contact the Philippine embassy or the nearest Philippine consulate general and migrant workers office for consular and welfare assistance,' it said. The Philippines is one of the world's largest providers of shipping manpower in the world. A bulk of Filipino seamen or more than 20 percent of the world's 1.2 million sailors are manning oil tankers, cargo ships, luxury liners, and passenger vessels worldwide. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
