Duran Duran guitarist on his 'emotional' Exeter homecoming gig

BBC News3 days ago
As Duran Duran prepare to take the stage at Powderham Castle in Devon, lead guitarist Dom Brown is experiencing more than just pre-show excitement, he is coming home."I lived here from the age of four to 12," Brown says, standing in Bull Meadow Park, Exeter, a place still vivid in his memory."This hill, we used to sledge down it when it snowed and I had a den in those bushes over there. Now based in London, Brown's return to Exeter has stirred a wave of nostalgia. "We'd sneak into a derelict building by the cemetery. It was just kids messing about, but those memories are strong."
Earlier in the day, he visited his childhood home."I wasn't expecting to go back inside," he said. "But walking through that door, it hit me."The pine floorboards were exactly as I remembered, the layout hadn't changed."My old bedroom still faced the garden, of course, everything seemed bigger when I was a kid, but it was all there. It was emotional."Exeter was where his love of music was born. He recalls a pivotal moment at school, thanks to an unconventional PE teacher."Mr Newell, he was an ex-hippie, I think, used to play music before class."One day he put on Pink Floyd's Welcome to the Machine. I remember lying on the mat, listening, and just being completely transfixed."That was it, that was the moment I knew I had to do something with music."Brown also spent hours in a local record shop, Pitts, where he would queue up to sit in the listening booths."It was like a padded white cell," he laughs."You'd go in, pick a song, and just sit there, soaking it in until someone kicked you out. Those experiences were foundational."
Brown's early influences were steeped in classic rock: Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Queen, and, later, blues legends like Stevie Ray Vaughan. His parents' record collection, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, also left a mark.Fast forward to 21 years ago, and Brown found himself stepping into the world of Duran Duran.
Brown became Duran Duran's guitarist after filling in for Andy Taylor in 2004, initially as a temporary replacement and then as a full-time touring member in 2006."It was a whirlwind," he said. "I got a call on a Wednesday from their tour manager, asking if I could play with them that Friday."I met John and Roger Taylor that night, jammed with them in a studio. They were testing me playing riffs, seeing if I could keep up."John Taylor handed him a stack of CDs, nine or 10 albums' worth of material, with about 20 songs marked up."I stayed up most of the night learning them," Brown recalled."The next day, I was back in the studio with John and Roger, running through everything. Nick and Simon were in Europe doing promo, so there weren't even any vocals."Then I met them in Tunbridge Wells, we ran through the set once and then we did the show. It was an absolute whirlwind."
Since then, Brown has become a core part of the band's sound, recording on several albums, co-writing songs, and touring the world."There've been so many highlights," he said. "Playing Madison Square Garden, the Hollywood Bowl, the Concert for Diana in 2007 and Live 8 in 2005."But the standout for me was headlining BST Hyde Park in 2022, 75,000 people in my now home town. That was unforgettable."And now, another special moment awaits."Playing Powderham Castle, here in Exeter, where it all began, it's going to be emotional," he said."I'm trying not to put too much pressure on it, but I know there'll be a special energy in the air. I can already feel it."
Despite his global career, Brown still feels a deep connection to Exeter."These were my formative years," he says. "At that age, a year feels like a lifetime. So spending eight years here, it's a major part of who I am."When he's not touring with Duran Duran, Brown keeps busy in London, where he runs his own studio and performs with his covers band, Uncovered: The Electric Rock Experience."We play the music I grew up with, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Bowie. It's a joy."As the lights go up tonight at Powderham Castle later, Brown will not just be playing another show.

Poppy Delevingne welcomes baby girl Kaia Moon with billionaire BF Archie Keswick

Poppy Delevingne has welcomed her first child with her partner Archie Keswick. The model, 39, and the billionaire businessman, 44, who went public with their relationship last June, shared their happy news to Instagram on Friday. Uploading a black and white snap of her clutching her baby girl's hand, Poppy wrote: '20.05.25 The stars aligned, & then there was you.' Revealing her daughter's name, she continued: 'KAIA MOON KESWICK. Welcome to the world, baby bear. You have our hearts, our everything.' Poppy announced in January that she was expecting her first child, a baby girl, with her partner, Archie. The socialite said becoming a mother is 'all I've ever wanted,' as she shared the happy news with Elle magazine. Poppy first discovered she was pregnant during London Fashion Week when, during a fitting for a Burberry show, she noticed her clothes were tighter than usual. Sensing something was different she took a pregnancy test shortly after and then learned she was expecting a daughter. Speaking to ELLE UK in January, she said: 'Obviously, I would have been fine with either, and when I was younger, I always thought when I get pregnant, I wouldn't find out, but the second we got told we could find out, we did. 'I'm so excited. I come from all girls, we're very girl-heavy. Girls are great.' Poppy's sisters, model Cara, 32, and socialite Chloe, 39, were both delighted when she told them the news. She said: 'We were all in New York, with each other and with the bump, and there was a lot of talking to the bump, stroking the bump. They're just elated.' Poppy and Archie kept the news of their pregnancy to themselves for a while and only told friends and family around the four-month mark. The model previously admitted she was 'really nervous' about her pregnancy and wanted to 'protect' it for a while. She explained: 'It just feels like such an extraordinary privilege to be able to do this, to be able to have a baby at this age and at this time, and when it happened, I couldn't really believe it.' Sweet: She revealed her daughter's name in the post Poppy has long wanted to start a family of her own, but admitted in recent years she thought it might not happen for her and had 'made peace with it'. Poppy and Archie went public with their romance in July 2024, when they attended BST Hyde Park festival together. Archie is the son of Simon Keswick, former director of the multi-billion pound Hong Kong conglomerate Jardine Matheson - owner of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. The family has a private fortune of $8.6bn, according to the Sunday Times Rich List, and owns an 18,000-acre estate in Angus. Now the group's interests range from prime Hong Kong real estate and brands, including the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, to Vietnam's largest dairy producer. Archie was previously described as a 'demon on the tennis court' who 'loves house music' by Tatler. The Eton-educated businessman was named as one of the world's most eligible bachelors back in 2019. Archie is no stranger to a high-profile relationship. He previously dated actress Sienna Miller, 43, who once lived with Poppy in New York. He was linked to Sienna after reportedly being friends for years. The actress is now in a relationship with model Oli Green, 28, and they welcomed a daughter in December 2023. Poppy was previously married to James Cook. While neither addressed the break-up publicly, they are said to have called time on their union after eight years in 2022.

Reunited Gallagher brothers hold hands in display of unity as they take to the stage for night two of Oasis tour and share 'real reason' for their long-awaited reunion after 16 years

Liam and Noel Gallagher held hands as they walked out on the stage at Cardiff's Principality Stadium for night two of the Oasis tour on Saturday, before revealing the 'real reason' for their long-awaited reunion. More than 75,000 fans watched history be made as Noel, 58, and Liam, 52, appeared for the first time on stage together in 16 years, as they put on a reunited front on Friday. And the following night saw the once warring siblings prove once and for all that they've put their differences aside in a touching moment, which saw them waltz onto stage hand-in-hand to the cheers of their adoring fans. Many believed the reunion would never happen after the pair's infamous dressing room feud in Paris that tore the band apart in 2009. Noel insisted he would never work with Liam again and described him as 'a fork in a world of soup', kicking off their years-long feud. In the years that have followed, a feud and bitter fighting has ensued with the brothers trading insults back and forth in interviews and social media. However, during Saturday's gig, Noel gave a special shout out to Oasis co-founder Paul Arthurs - better known as Bonehead - and credited him for mending things between him and Liam. Getting emotional at times during the night, when the band returned for their encore Noel directed the audience to cheer for Bonehead, saying: 'On guitar, if it wasn't for him, none of this would have happened!' Bonehead was part of the original Oasis line-up, alongside the Gallaghers, Paul McGuigan (aka Guigsy) and Tony McCarroll. Last year, music industry insiders claimed that the guitarist was 'one of the drivers of the reunion'. In November, he was reported to 'ecstatic' that the band was back together - with Liam and Noel reportedly 'both wanting him in the fold' after he brought them back together. One insider told The Sun: 'The Oasis family has really come back together. Bonehead is ecstatic and Noel has brought in some of his band too.' The source added that Bonehead, who overcame tonsil cancer in 2023, could be credited with helping to end the feud between brothers. 'Bonehead is one of the few people they are both pals with and he has recently been trying too and it's finally paid off,' a source close to the negotiations told the Mirror. As well as being an original member of the Britpop band, Bonehead has also remained friends with both Noel and Liam over the years, performing regularly with Liam in particular. He left Oasis in 1999 during the recording of its fourth album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, with an official statement saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. It comes after sources claimed in PJ Harrison's book In The Fall And Rise Of Oasis that the brothers 'still really love each other', despite their public bitter feud. An insider also added that Liam was the one that made peace with Noel, explaining: 'He's a great one for making, you know, peace. He's the one that will make the peace and bring things back together with people.' In a post on X when he was asked who called first him or Noel, Liam replied: 'I called him but don't tell anyone as I don't want folk thinking I'm a soft lad and stuffs keep it between me n you cheers x.' Proving they are closer than ever, Liam and Noel stepped out on stage to gaze at the 75,000 supporters who had waited years for this moment, marking the 'momentous' return of one of the iconic British bands. 'Manchester vibes in the arena', Liam announced with his iconic maracas in-hand before beginning the set with Hello, singing the apt lyrics: 'It's good to be back.' Continuing with some of their biggest hits, Oasis then went into Acquiesce before transitioning into the fan-favourite 1995 tune Morning Glory. 'Yes beautiful people! It's been too long,' Liam announced. He then ordered the crowd to 'turn around and bounce' ahead of Cigarettes and Alcohol. Later, Noel appeared emotional as he performed Half The World Away and even stopped singing for a few bars at one point. There was also a heart-warming moment as the band paid to tribute to Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident earlier this week. While belting out the lyrics of the iconic Live Forever, a photo displayed on the big screen of the much-loved Portuguese star wearing his number 20 Liverpool shirt. Jota died at the age of just 28 along with his brother Andre Silva. Diogo had celebrated his wedding days earlier. Before Oasis took to the stage, Richard Ashcroft was their support for the night, telling the crowd: 'So glad to be here with the greatest rock 'n' roll band. When I heard Oasis were reforming I thought I was in it!' Richard's former band The Verve toured with Oasis back in the early days, and Noel was spotted in the crowd ahead of his own performance to catch some of Richard's set.
