Eid prayers not allowed at Srinagar's Jama Masjid, Mirwaiz alleges house arrest
The gates of Jamia Masjid were locked early in the morning, and police were deployed outside to prevent entry.
'Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, Srinagar, deeply regrets to inform that the authorities have once again disallowed Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the Eidgah as well as at the historic Jama Masjid in by closing the gates of the mosque and deploying police personnel outside,' the management of the historic mosque said in a statement. It said the authorities did not even permit the pre-dawn (Fajr) prayers.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the move and posted on X: 'Eid Mubarak! Yet again, Kashmir wakes up to the sad reality: no Eid prayers at Eidgah, and Jama Masjid locked down for the 7th straight year. I too have been detained at my home.'
'In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are deprived of their fundamental right to pray -- even on their most important religious occasion celebrated across the world!' he said.
'What a shame on those who rule over us, and on those elected by the people who choose to remain silent as our rights are trampled over, again and again,' Mirwaiz said on X.
After offering namaz at Hazratbal dargah on the outskirts of Srinagar, chief minister Omar Abdullah said, 'While we are celebrating Eid, unfortunately, once again, permission was denied to offer namaz in Srinagar's iconic Jama Masjid. I don't know the basis of these decisions, but we need to learn to trust our people. These are the same people who came out to protest against the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The government should think about allowing namaz at the historic Jama Masjid.'
Reacting to the developments, PDP leader Iltija Mufti said: 'I want to ask the National Conference government and the lieutenant governor (Manoj Sinha) why the Mirwaiz is still being placed under house arrest when you claim everything is normal. As India's only and the largest Muslim majority state, we Kashmiris have the right to worship... More than infrastructure, we need dignity and security of life.'
PDP chief and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said: 'Unfortunately, the government, on this pious day, has denied permission to offer namaz in the Jama Masjid, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been put under house arrest... I protest against the state government also, which is just watching everything and doing nothing.'

No parties have filed claims for addition, deletion of names from Bihar draft voter list yet: EC
The Election Commission on Sunday said that no political party has filed claims and objections for the addition or deletion of the names of voters from the draft electoral rolls in Bihar since its publication on Friday. 'From 1 August 2025 (3 PM) till 3 August (3 PM), all political parties put together have filed zero claims and objections for the addition of the names of eligible electors and deletion of the names of ineligible electors,' the poll panel said in a bulletin released on its official website. The draft list was published on Friday as part of the special revision of the electoral rolls in the state, which was announced by the Election Commission on June 24. As part of the exercise, persons whose names were not on the 2003 voter list will need to submit proof of eligibility to vote. This means that 2.9 crore out of the state's 7.8 crore voters – or about 37% of the electors – will have to submit documentary evidence. Voters born before July 1, 1987, must show proof of their date and place of birth, while those born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, must also submit documents establishing the date and place of birth of one of their parents. Those born after December 2, 2004, will need proof of date of birth for themselves and both parents. The draft voter list published on Friday comprises electors who submitted their enumeration forms to the poll panel between June 24 and July 26. They will now have to produce proof of citizenship to make it to the final list that will be published on September 30. With the publication of the list, electors have a month to raise claims and objections, during which eligible voters can be added and ineligible names excluded. During this period, voters who believe their names were wrongly deleted can approach the relevant authorities for redressal. Exclusions higher among women, Muslim-dominated districts A Scroll analysis of the data published by the Election Commission on Friday showed that women made up 55% of voters who were excluded from Bihar's draft voter list after the revision. It also showed that five of the state's 10 districts with the largest share of Muslim population had the highest number of excluded voters. At 15.1%, Gopalganj district in western Bihar saw the highest rate of exclusion in the state. The voter list in the district's Gopalganj Assembly constituency shrunk by 18.25% – also the highest in the state. The draft roll also removed nearly 65.6 lakh voters. Of them, 22.3 lakh were dead, 36.3 lakh had permanently moved or were absent, and 7 lakh were enrolled in multiple places, the Election Commission said.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in Islamabad on Saturday (August 2, 2025), met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at his official residence. At a joint press conference following their meeting, Mr. Sharif emphasised that Iran has the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, which has been at the centre of the ongoing tensions with Israel. "Pakistan stands with Iran for the acquisition of peaceful nuclear power," he said. Interestingly, Mr. Sharif's remarks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the US, which has designated Pakistan a "major non-NATO ally", over Tehran's nuclear programme. In June, Israel and the U.S. launched coordinated airstrikes on key Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following the attacks. During the press conference, Mr. Sharif condemned "Israeli aggression" against Iran and expressed solidarity with Tehran's right to self-defence. He criticised Israel's actions in Gaza and called upon the international community, particularly Muslim nations, to address the ongoing human rights violations in the region. Mr. Sharif said the two sides have signed several MoUs and made commitments and hoped that they would soon be transformed into agreements. He said Pakistan and Iran are aiming to achieve the target of $10 billion in annual trade. The two leaders also discussed issues related to terrorism and agreed to strengthen cooperation to combat militancy along their shared border. President Pezeshkian, in his remarks, said that the MoUs signed also included one about finalisation of the free trade agreement at the earliest between the two sides. According to state-run Radio Pakistan, Pakistan and Iran exchanged 12 agreements and MoUs in the presence of Sharif and Pezeshkian. The agreements and MoUs included cooperation in trade, agriculture, science, technology and innovation, information and communications, culture, art, tourism, climate, and maritime safety. During Sunday's (August 3, 2025) meeting, emphasis was placed on maximising the potential of neighbourhood trade, with Mr. Khan highlighting how ASEAN countries have benefited enormously by trading within their region. 'Geography is an advantage. Pakistan and Iran must utilise this discount of distance. If we don't, we lose both time and cost benefits,' he stated. The Pakistani Minister suggested organising targeted trade delegations that include representatives from federal and provincial chambers of commerce, enabling focused discussions on market access and regulatory facilitation, according to the statement. 'We've done this model successfully in Belarus and elsewhere,' he was quoted in the statement as saying. 'Let's do the same for Iran, starting with sectors that show the greatest potential for mutual benefit.' The ministers also expressed a shared commitment to increasing the use of existing trade corridors and border facilities. Mr. Atabak also highlighted ongoing discussions about increasing Pakistani exports to Iran and encouraged swift follow-up on newly signed agreements. 'Traders and industrialists in both countries are ready. They trust each other. What they need now is a clear and consistent facilitation mechanism from our side,' he noted. Mr. Khan said that beyond bilateral gains, such connectivity could expand to Turkey, Central Asia, Russia, and even parts of West Asia, creating an economic bloc of substantial power and resilience. Mr. Atabak supported the idea of holding a dedicated B2B day during every high-level visit and offered to bring Iranian business groups to Pakistan for in-depth meetings, the statement said. Both Ministers agreed on the importance of identifying specific sectors such as agriculture, livestock, services, energy, and cross-border logistics for future collaboration, the statement said. 'With high-level political alignment and mutual trust, Pakistan and Iran appear poised to enter a new phase of strategic economic partnership that could reshape regional trade dynamics,' it added.
